@Midnite Duke After Leon's death, his library was broken into and only the Necromonicon was stolen (the actual in-game event).

@Midnite Duke Leon wanted to collect every book in the world, considering his son Konstantinos is getting a learning education, there is every chance that when he is Basileus he will try to find it.

@Lord Durham I was surprised that Leon didn't go insane from reading the Necromonicon, but the event only gave him a 30% chance of insanity.

It makes sense there's a percentage attached, otherwise it would have been a real buzzkill: Read the book, instant insanity. :)

@Lord Durham I suppose the description in the Artifacts page does say that 'it can drive you insane' not 'it will drive you insane'.

I am reading @Lord Durham's classic Sons of Ragnar Lodbrok and the Necromonicon has a central role. I think that it is always confined to one character in CK2. This family really does not need to read that book.

Bless you, @Midnite Duke. Look for a post in that AAR coming very, very shortly. I hope you stick around.

@Lord Durham I suppose the description in the Artifacts page does say that 'it can drive you insane' not 'it will drive you insane'.

Understood. I was just getting wrapped up in HPL nerdism :).

@Lord Durham for a moment there I was thinking, what does HPL mean? But that's Lovecraft, isn't it? Never read anything by him, have only watched a few HOI YouTubers play his path in (I want to say Kaiserredux, but I'm not sure) a mod.

The Necronemomomikon is a danger to the world!

A major battle took place at Manzikert which was being seiged by Armenia. The Imperial Army won the battle and moved on to occupy Edessa.
A famous location for a good win this time.
On January 1st 867, Michael was planning to visit his mistresses when he was ambushed by a shadowy figure. The figure slit his throat.
Out of curiosity, what makes you decide to kill them off on random new year’s days? Are there criteria, or just the vibe? Is it to get to the 50 ruler headcount?
He built a tavern at the Hagia Sophia so that he could drink his sorrows away while meeting the Ecumenical Patriarch.
Now that’s a good bit of vertical integration. :D
The Pandemic ended, which was good as people were starving to death over the past year.
another lockdown was declared with a new Pandemic reaching Constantinople.
There’s always a pandemic. Are you getting a bit sick of them (pun intended)?
On January 1st 886, he went to his chambers and drank and drank and drank. Leon discovered him drowned in his beer.
He should have known it was a dangerous day for a bender.

Trying to catch up with this AAR but still woefully behind. Apologies but can't keep up with the posting pace. (I'm panting as I write this!)

However, I felt moved to write because of the discovery of the Necromonicon.
...for a moment there I was thinking, what does HPL mean? But that's Lovecraft, isn't it?
Definitely, Lovecraft. @StrategyGameEnthusiast you have no idea what you have unlocked here in AARland. Perhaps, indeed, it is for our "benefit" because the Lovecraft-inspired AAR from @Lord Durham is now relaunching. No doubt, your playing with the Necronomicon has stirred the dark magic locked in that AAR. Whatever the reason, be forewarned.

(Now, I will go back to working on the backpages.)

Basileios conquered a lot of territory, but at least he wasn't interested in assassination. Did he engage in incest?

It's nice to see a victory at Manzikert for Byzantium...

Why wasn't the ruler of Neapolis punished for his inattentiveness?

The Necronomicon, huh? Will that come up again? Will Cthulhu appear?

I know, right?

A bit of all three. The criteria are that the 'OTL Version' of the character died in that year, the vibe is the making up stories about their death (in-game, a button is just clicked using a cheat mod). Yes, getting the headcount is necessary (and don't worry, reigns are getting longer in general as it is a Golden Age).
Now that’s a good bit of vertical integration.
Only an alcoholic would build a tavern at the Hagia Sophia (Also Smbat from the most recent Interlude can't be thrilled, being an Iconoclast).

Not really, the hospital upgrades are now so good I don't really have to care about them. Hence why there wasn't a lockdown since the reign of Basileios.
He should have known it was a dangerous day for a bender.
The characters don't know that they have to die on a specific date. Then again, Basileios was a depressed alcoholic, so he probably couldn't care less.

Don't worry, the pace will probably slow down for a bit as I'm not ready to play the next two rulers (Alexandros, whose reign will be very short, and his successor, whose reign will be the longest yet) because of distractions (new Football Manager save)
Basileios conquered a lot of territory, but at least he wasn't interested in assassination. Did he engage in incest?
No, Basileios' two wives were unrelated to him. They were created using the 'Create a Debutante' option in Sketchy's Cheat Menu.
It's nice to see a victory at Manzikert for Byzantium...
Yeah, when I saw that it was under siege, I decided that I had to have a battle there, because I doubt there'll be another battle opportunity there.
Why wasn't the ruler of Neapolis punished for his inattentiveness?
Because of my inattentiveness (Also tyranny, not that it would have mattered because of the cheat mods, but he died shortly after the raids anyway).
The Necronomicon, huh? Will that come up again? Will Cthulhu appear?
Maybe. Obviously it needs the scholarship focus, so with the way I am roleplaying, it needs a learning educated ruler. Leon's son Konstantinos is more than likely going to be the next one, so maybe he'll go after it again. I don't know if Cthulhu will appear as I don't think I've ever gotten the event about an appearance before.

Alright, finally caught up (but still panting as no doubt a new update will arrive sooner than it can be read). With all of these mods and the disease settings, death is ever-present in this AAR, hanging like an ankle-level fog in each chapter.

I don't know if Cthulhu will appear as I don't think I've ever gotten the event about an appearance before.
Cthulhu lurks in the dark corners of the game. Beware, you may trip over the ancient one without even exploring the latest chapters in the AAR by @Lord Durham . You have been warned....

Part 4: The First Golden Age (842-1025): Chapter 5: The Reign of Alexandros II (912-913)
912 + January 1st 913:
Alexandros II ascended as the guardian of his nephew Konstantinos. As the new Basileus' health was declining rapidly and severely, he arranged for Romanos, the son of his half-brother Theophylaktos, to take over if needed. A courtier gave birth to a bastard daughter. Alexandros had mother and baby assassinated, but spared the father as he was married to the Basileus' niece. Alexandros remarked to himself "I had to do all of this, killing the tainted, the impure. The sanctity of marriage needs to be respected". The Basileus reflected on his assassinations of priests, monks and Romanos' late wife for their affairs, concluding that the eradication of extramarital sex was a necessity. Alexandros never married, because he thought women saw him as nothing more than Leon's fat younger brother and would cheat on him. His logic was "If someone would cheat on Leon, everyone would cheat on me". The Basileus did love his food, and on January 1st 913 he choked on his swan. Romanos was now the guardian of his son-in-law-to-be Konstantinos...

Finally caught up!

So much death...

What are the requirements for Rome again? Do you think you'll make it within 50 rulers?

Reactions:
@jak7139 the requirements for Rome are (from the Wiki): Controlling the duchies of Thrace, Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Tunis, Sicily, Apulia, Rome, Dalmatia, Ravenna, Venice and Genoa. The hard part will probably keeping the motivation to play to 50 rulers (If I wasn't roleplaying, thanks to the Alexander bloodline, I could probably do it in 7 or 8 rulers). (Edit: I already have Thrace, Sicily (since the beginning) and Antioch (since Basileios' conquest of Syria), but also provinces in Apulia and Dalmatia)
