What is Arikuri
Arikuri serves two distinct purposes:
  • A unique total conversion mod set on an exoplanet discovered by future Earth, blending medieval gameplay with scientific worldbuilding
  • An experimental environment for Procedural Map Generator (PMG), where new features are tested before core implementation

Key Features
  • Scientifically-accurate world with realistic tectonics, climates, and biomes - modeled in Rock 3 and refined through PMG
  • 43 distinct handcrafted religions with custom iconography, actively playing role of different ideological factions on the map
  • Constructed languages (conlangs) with loc entries in-game and available IPA tables out of the game (with writing systems coming soon)
  • Unique genetic appearances tied to a wide selection of heritages
  • Original soundtrack featuring 12 tracks in different Arikuri languages
  • Custom loading screens and immersive artwork

PMG Integration & Development
Built using Procedural Map Generator and Rock 3, Arikuri serves as a testing ground for experimental features:
  • Features are implemented and refined in Arikuri first
  • Feedback gathered shapes PMG's core development
  • Some features remain Arikuri-exclusive, others transfer to PMG

Setting & Inspiration
Inspired by Strugatsky Brothers' "Hard to be a God" and planetary romance genre, the mod explores Earth observers' influence on medieval society through scientific worldbuilding.

Arikuri as Standalone Total Conversion Mod

Arikuri is a comprehensive total conversion mod in its early development phase. While it may not yet match the polish of long-established mods, it already offers an engaging exoplanet setting ripe for exploration.

The mod aims to deliver a distinctive experience among CK3's Total Conversion Mods through several key features:

  • The mod embraces the "planetary romance" science fiction genre, blending the imaginative storytelling of Brothers Strugatsky and Edgar Rice Burroughs with rigorous scientific principles. While it captures the wonder and adventure of fantasy, every aspect of its universe is grounded in logical, scientifically-plausible world building.
  • It is meticulously crafted using scientific principles – from plate tectonics and biomes to constructed languages and writing systems. The focus on scientific and algorithmic approaches to world-building extends to both natural elements (flora, fauna, ecosystems) and cultural aspects (societies, traditions, cuisines)
  • Beyond standard gameplay mechanics, Arikuri's immersion extends through rich multimedia elements that transcend the boundaries of CK3 itself. Players can expect original music, lore essays and texts, cinematic trailers, and poetry in constructed languages – all contributing to a meta-level experience that maintains the mod's core vision of scientific world-building. These elements work together to create an expansive universe that exists both within and beyond the game's traditional framework. (For example we are planning to release some IPA notation for conlangs constructed by PMG/Arikuri algorithms, essays about particular culture writing systems, OST that features spoken conlangs, etc)

Beta Laboratory / Showcase of usage for Procedural Map Generator

The mod serves as a testing ground for experimental features, often advancing ahead of PMG's main branch in terms of polish for certain features. Features are first implemented and refined in Arikuri, feedback is gathered and discussed with the PMG team, before proceeding with new development.

Example of Manual integration with Rock 3 and Usage of Generator Paint Mode

The creation process for Arikuri's map:
  • Scientifically accurate tectonics and climates were modeled using Rock 3 software
  • Rock 3 heightmaps were imported into Procedural Map Generator
  • Rock 3's climate map served as an overlay/guide for refining the Generator's biome map in brush mode
  • Province and history generation were executed with optimized settings and new immersion features
  • Final polish was applied in the in-game map editor for enhanced texture detail

Next patch, Alpha 1.3, will be released around 1.1.2025 and will contain:
  • first portion of bookmarks
  • first Arikuri video trailer
  • complete immersion-centered revamp for holy sites, including placements, bonuses
  • few new unique to Arikuri religion tenets
  • new ancient race genetics
  • varied immersion material - more loadscreen
  • title polish and removal of tiny kingdoms and empires
  • localization fixes
  • first test load of custom CoA emblems

Writing Systems Development Roadmap

We're starting a major development phase focusing on Arikuri's writing systems. This ambitious undertaking will gradually expand both visual and mechanical aspects of the mod.

Dev Blog

Development Plans

We're mapping out the implementation of 10 initial writing systems (out of 21 existing on Thekan). These will progressively influence:
- CoA (Coat of Arms) glyph banks
- UI elements
- Bookmarks and loading screens
- Events and decisions
- Cultural and language mechanics

Scientific Foundation
This development continues our commitment to realistic world-building, building upon PMG's conlang generation system (showcased in @ck2rpg's video). Each writing system corresponds to a specific in-game language, utilizing PMG-generated name lists with reconstructed ny me IPA tables.

Upcoming in next release - Version 1.3 (End of the year)
Our next release will include the first implementation steps:
- Ioddrik CoA glyphs and aesthetics
- Rabik religion CoA iconography
- Holy site system refactor
- First set of bookmarks
- Initial unique mechanics for three religions, including Rabik

This represents our first steps in implementing these complex systems. We believe this methodical approach to linguistic and cultural development will help Arikuri deliver a uniquely immersive experience among Total Conversion Mods.
