Summary

Game crashing after Windows 11 24H2 Update

Description

Hi, since updating to Windows 11 24H2, me and many others, whom I've been in contact with via the forum's thtreads encountered problems with Crusader Kings 3. The game either crashes during gameplay or won’t boot up at all. When it freezes, I can’t use Alt+Tab or Ctrl+Alt+Del to close it, and I have to shut down the PC directly from the power supply. Below I will list my system specs and troubleshooting I tried so far.

System specs:

GPU: Nvidia RTX 4070 TI
CPU: Intel i9-10900KF
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z490 Gaming X
RAM: 32 GB

Steps I've tried:

Clean reinstall of Windows
Uninstalled the game with Revo Uninstaller and reinstalled on different drives
Added the game as an exception in Windows Defender
Ran both Steam and CK3 as Administrator
Confirmed graphics drivers are up to date
Moved my save files to another folder to rule out corrupted saves
Verified Visual C++ (ver. 14.40.33816.0) and .NET Framework (ver. 4.8.1) are up to date
Changed the Windows “Energy Plan" to “Performance" (I'm not sure if this affects desktop PCs, but I'm out of ideas)

As a side note, I contacted Microsoft support and they reported and I coute "it appears that this may be a compatibility issue after a computer system update, requiring the game developer to also make in-game updates for the new version of the system." And they instructed me to either wait or to downgrade to 23H2.

Steps to reproduce

I've been playing well for over 320 hours and when Windows 11 24H2 came out I decided to update, since then the game constantly crashes on boot. It loads for a while, I see the loading screen and as I described earlier the whole PC just frozes, not even being able to CTRL ALT DEL, and having to shut down the PSU.

Game Version

1.14.2.2

Platform

Windows

Had this problem today the first time on Ck3. The issue happens on some other games (Path of Exile 1&2 e.g.) as well.
One workaround to keep at least prevent the complete PC freeze, is to remove 2-4 cores from mthe CK3 process.
For Path of Exile it helped to change the priority to realtime and back to normal to unfreeze it. Couln't test that one yet in Ck3.

My specs:
Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100.3194
Ryzen 7 5700X3D
RTX 3060 Ti

The game doesn't crash for me, but I do have issues with the screen flickering. And it all happened since I updated to Windows 11 24H2.

My Specs:

Windows 11 24H2
AMD Ryzen 7 7700
Nvidia Geforce 4060 Ti 16 Gb
32 Gb RAM

Greetings

Very dissapointed with Paradox, It's been almost three months since the referred bug. And there is no fix, neither explanation. The only thing we got is a new announced DLC and a broken game, and the last thing is not a new at all.

Anyone tried lately if the game is still broken?
@Blofeld2000, yup issue persists. Friends and I can hardly get through an hour of a multiplayer game without someone crashing.
Note that this issue is at core a Windows 11 problem. It is not at all clear if it is possible to rewrite the game to avoid it, as I understand it.

it is a severely broken Windows update that has caused problems across the whole gaming - indeed computer - industry.

A user has come up with another possible workaround

Some affected users have definitely seen that help them with this issue. I suggest you all try this first, as it has a pretty good record of helping!

Sorry about all that!

An upfdate from the devs just came in:

Essentially that the very latest Nvidia driver seems to help.

Played another run and computer frooze again, so the new Nvidia drivers didn't help me.
Did you try the other things in my post #68 above? Especially the last one .

Hi, @AndrewT
This is all great and thank you for sharing the, potential, workarounds.
What would be realy, really great and encouraging though, is to hear that Paradox Devs are in contact with Microsfot and are hammering them hard to fix the issue that is affecting Paradox's product.
Is there a chance you could find out if that is hapening?
All the best!

As an external support contractor I don't have any channel directly to the devs of any game, I'm afraid.

So for me it started happening now, I did latest Nvidia install and Reinstalled the game clean install still the issue persist, I will try some of the recomended fixes here.
Here are my details.

Edit: it seems to be fixed, so I updated my Nvidia Drivers, and then I validated my bios, figure I had a very OLD ones, I updated them, then I validated the other drivers on my PC and also were outdated, after all of this, seems to be working fine, I have been playing for about 10+ minutes now. it was failing really fast before.

Edit 2: It happened again this morning, All the times I have been playing I have had a Patreon Audio Podcast on the background. After restart I tried 2 things, I first played the first 10+ minutes without the patreon and also checked Event Viewer and Saw that there were some errors related to "GameInput" it failed many times right about the time the whole thing broke.

When I did some research I found that there is probably a 2023 version in the Program Files folder and a new Current version in System32, so I dont know if its related, I ended up uninstalling the program (add or remove programs), which removed the one in program files folder.

Edit 3: I walked away left the game open I came back and then it happened again, this time I had walmart website open.

I tried to update my GPU drivers and the thing of the registry as well. The first thing doesn't make any impact, the second thing does now i can play for 30 minutes instead of the 10 i was able to play before. But this is not a solution nor even a workaround. I'm not going to reboot my computer 3 or 4 times for a playing session. As others have commented we will appreciate a word from devs instead of dev dairy of new content we will not play because the game is unplayable.

Yeah I did the memory Fix in one of the posts and still I get the freeze, I was able to play for 1 hour... I feel like I had some weird hiccups when the game was saving so I dont know if it could be related to it.

So whats very strange is, after updating to win 11 both ck3 and victoria 3 used to still work on my machine. I did run some repairs and everything but these 2 games are starting on my machine now. They both crash when loading them up midway throught. Im testing for hardware issues but have not found one yet. Very strange. And annoying :0

I also don’t see this problem in the list of known problems, it scares me.

Thanks for your help! It's really appreciated that you shared the workarounds. I've been playing for 4 hours and haven't gotten a single crash in Crusader Kings 3 yet. If anything changes, I'll edit the post further.

UPD
It happened again. The only solution I'm using right now is to take 2 CPU cores away from the game, and when it freezes, change the priority to "Realtime", then return the priority back.
