@Brisingr I was curious whether anything was still going on in EU3 and was surprised to see Sforza near the top!

Sorry but the Sforza game is on a computer that no longer works. Plus I was getting pretty bored with the endless wars.

I'm currently running a V2 and an EU4 AAR though, if you're interested. I was missing from the Forum for about 6 years.

Thanks for your interest!

Air force academy, huh? Well best of luck, even if it isn't as good as a job with one of real branches of the armed forces. :p *

*before anyone stones me, I'm from a Navy family so inter-service flaming is allowed. :D
Old marching song from 1980s navy boot camp "we're not the army, ground pounding army. We're not the marines, they don't even look mean. We're not the coast guard, they don't even work hard. We're not the air force, chair riding air force. We are the navy! Mighty mighty navy. World's greatest navy, mighty mighty navy. " It continues from there but you get the picture. Interservice rivalry is all in good fun. :)

A pitiful attempt at feedback after WAY TOO MANY weeks of absence...

Stupid aside comment... Anybody out there a fan of Kimigure Orange Road? I'm listening to soundtracks... Good '80s reminiscences.

Yeah... Part 4, or something! Britain becomes a recurring nightmare. At least until I start to get a handle on them... Which is soon!

:p

Good point about colonies -- they do have some, still. It might still be worth trying, if only for a role-playing purpose... And economics, of course.

I tend to agree with you. That's "a bridge too far" as they say. Not really in my interests at all. On the other hand, I need to find a way to control them, somehow, and to become a looming presence so I don't have to keep invading them by sea. I do, in fact, have a solution for this problem coming up... I'm actually a war or two ahead of you, so... You'll be pleased to see how things turn out.

I've already responded to this, but it's worth restating! I'm really glad to hear you say this is helpful for learning strategy, even if I don't always hold to the Strategy Guide! That's really what I'd hope would happen, when I started this AAR. I'll repeat that you'll catch on eventually. All I ever needed to know, I learned while playing Victoria! That is to say, in a realistic simulation, you'll find that the most victorious strategies are inherent in ALL realistic simulations! And, yes! That IS an invitation to read Fire Warms the Northern Lands, my Victoria masterpiece of fiction, historybook and gameplay!

Who???

 Well, I had to guard my back, right?! Seriously... I had to guard my back, so that my neighbors who, stupidly, would not ally with me against the Arab menace, would refrain from attacking me while I was busy crusading!

Yes, well... Need I say that I'm frustrated with the pool of names for poor, little Milan (at least it was at one time -- not meant to become a world power, I think!)?

Pesky shopkeepers!

Yes, messy, it is true! Got 15,000 enemy troops roaming the countryside... Time to really deal with them, I think!

Indeed, you are correct (though I'm dreadfully short on my Rev.War history -- don't know who Morgan is). When outnumbered, the universal rules of irregular warfare state, keep moving and attack only when victory is assured.

I'm afraid their chances are gone... Milan is now powerful enough to fight a two-front war, no matter who the 2nd opponent is. At least I HOPE so!

Well... Looking back (ACK! I'm 15 years ahead of my updates!!!), I see this...

Sliders1619.jpg
I'm actually not a big believer in slider changes, because of the Stability hit that I take every time I move one, which puts me back several years in Stability improvements... I also don't believe Offense/Defense has any real advantage either way -- they tend to balance each other out -- so, combined with my reluctance to move sliders, my Off/Def sliders tend to stay pretty close to the middle. One thing I noted in the Strategy Guide is that defensive is sometimes good for aggressive players, because of the bonus it gives for siege warfare. In any case, no I don't typically recommend one over the other.

I've really neglected my navy (and you'll see these chickens come to roost in future updates!), because I'm concentrating my money on colonization, army building, and economy investments (followed by anti-inflation measures, which never seem to be a priority with me -- which is probably a mistake!).

The way vassalization is rigged in this patch, I don't think it's realistic for any country that actually has a colonial empire. England would require more than a complete takeover, in order to be ripe for vassalization. That's too bad, for many reasons. They'd be a good ally!

Okay, before I wrap up, another stupid aside question... Anyone out there a fan of Spaten Optimator beer??? I'm on my 3rd bottle, and I'm having a GREAT time! :D I'm willing to take recommendations to disprove my assertion that this is the best beer in the world!

An update should be coming relatively soon. I can't promise right away, because I have about 5 things I need to do urgently (and an update, unfortunately, is not one of them!). But real-world priorities are not necessarily determinitive of when I make a Paradox update. Oh well....

Thanks for reading and commenting, everybody! Special thanks, also, for those first-time commenters!

It seems your "innovation" slider is going the wrong way vs your play style.

Textiles?
Who needs textiles when there are wars around the world? :D
The many, many widows need jobs so they aren't forced to beg the emperor for food. Let them make clothes and buy their own cake. :)

Sorry! Been really, really busy! :D I'll see if I can do something this weekend.

Yeah, I do have quite a few mobs on retainer, don't I?

Nope, pretty sure Muscovy defeated Kazakh, and I haven't seen them since. But I might be wrong.

Agamemnon! Thank you, and Welcome! I'm always honored to have someone's first post on the forum, especially from someone named Agamemnon!

Welcome, Armonistan! Thanks for dropping a line! It's readers like you who make up a huge portion of that readcount, so thanks!

I will try to do an update this weekend, but I can't promise. We'll see.

Ironically, my plan was to increase my posting rate so I can finish this before HOI 3 releases, because I'd love to do some AARs on that.

Thanks again to everyone who's reading, and lurking, and especially to all those who comment!

Did you do any other hoi3 aars? Aside from Imperial Novo?

All right, it's official...

Johan just posted my Quickstart Guide for HOI 3.

... and so now you can see why I haven't been around a whole lot lately! :D

I've been writing furiously almost every day for the last 3 months, but very little of that time could be spent on anything but these projects.

I do intend to keep going with Sforza!!! -- it's just going to have some competition for my attention, as I'm also going to be dabbling with some HOI 3 AARs (yes, that's multiples, probably -- only one long one planned though).

Thanks for your understanding! :)

I am interested to read your guide, presumably German based? I would like to see the differences and similarities between our playstyles.

I've been trying to alternate in the following pattern:

1) I Am Siam
2) Imperio Novo
3) I Am Siam
4) Sforza
5) I Am Siam
6) Imperio Novo
7) I Am Siam
8) Sforza

etc.
Well, I guess I am Siam is next lol.

Thanks! I was SOOO happy to finally get that Assessor building to start reducing Inflation (that happened a while back, but it's taken all this time to really get traction against it). I notice (I think) that in the newer expansions the Assessor no longer affects Inflation, yes? They have something else that does it, right?

I'll see what I can scrounge up for a map. I'd love to commit to getting rid of Burgundy, but they're more of an annoyance than a strategic goal. Still, annoyances close to home are especially annoying. :)

I'm kind of amazed, too! :D I would have thought, when I started, that playing 400 years was a little crazy. But I've persevered! :) Welcome, Worn Steel7! Always good to have new readers in this ancient AAR!

Thanks! Ahh, I remember Axis & Allies! I had Fortress America, too -- in fact I have the box cover (later discontinued as events overtook it) with Saddam Hussein as one of the enemies. Great to hear you're playing EU 3 again! I've explored a little with Divine Wind, but haven't really gotten into it yet. Maybe once this is done.

See.... I'm such a slow player, I can't imagine having multiple games in process (well... I DO, but they're in different game platforms). Savoy was always a good choice -- I used to play either them or Milan often in the beta. And Bohemia. Certain countries are just in the thick of it! Glad I'm encouraging to you! :)

Thanks for the comments, folks! I'm almost done with taxes, so I'm hoping I can use my lunchhour tomorrow to get another update ready.

Axis and Allies, Fortress America, and Risk. Many days in my early teens were spent on those games.

Well, it was a definite marathon but I planned for that from the beginning. A great read, well worth the time. My finger is basically healed now; somewhat stiff. Aches in the cold. Usable.
I find it interesting that you were in the CAP. When I was in AFJROTC at Pensacola high school, many of us did CAP as part of a precursor to a planned military career. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot about SAR and emergency first aid. I got into orienteering from my experiences in that time. Youth, it's wasted on the young these days. Lol.

@son of liberty I'm amazed at your reading speed. I am a VERY slow reader! But I definitely appreciate your willingness to read through these AARs! And very honored that you've chosen to read MY AARs -- you read, as I recall, Shining Stars, and then Imperio Novo, and now Sforza!!! If you liked the narrative aspects of Imperio Novo I definitely recommend Fire Warms the Northern Lands and Castles in the Sky (that's the one with Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson). But I see you've moved on to I Am Siam, which is another of my favorites! :)

I find it interesting that you are being highly lauded for reaching 250k views. Now? Over 1000000 views! That is just awesome.

You know, I might never have noticed that I'd hit 1 million views if you hadn't mentioned it! :D I'm very honored -- I've really enjoyed entertaining folks here on the Forum!

I looked, and Fire Warms the Northern Lands is only at 663,000 views. Still respectable, but I always figured it might have been more popular than Sforza!!! Apparently not! Fire Warms the Northern Lands definitely won more awards, though. Probably because Sforza!!! was never completed, which is the requirement for the main AARLand Awards.

You asked about the HOI3 QuickStart Guide. It's still available -- I just downloaded it -- at this link. It's slightly possible that it's restricted to those who made a certain purchase, like the Collector's Edition, but I don't think so. I think it's available for anyone. And it was written for any country -- more of a runthrough of all the interface tools than anything. Strangely I don't remember doing a beta-AAR for HOI 3. I suppose I was too busy writing other stuff.

My AARs are all (?) listed on my Inkwell Page. The Inkwell is where you should be able to look up just about any writer, and is a great place to find new stuff to read. I'm also going to recommend The Mr. T Memorial Showcase, where many of us who've been around a while recall and honor those works we still remember enjoying way back when! :D

As for other HOI 3 AARs, I did try two other AARs in the years following Imperio Novo. Locarno was an experiment with the idea of Italy joining the Allies against Germany at an early date -- sadly never finished, but I found it an interesting idea. Kriegsgefahr was a challenge attempt to try to remain at peace through the whole game, playing as Germany :D. OH!! And, look -- I just found an AAR that didn't make it onto my Inkwell page -- there's also Early to War, where I experimented with the idea of Germany launching WW II EARLY, before its opponents fully industrialized, technologized, and militarized. I don't recall if I finished any of these last 3, but Kriegsgefahr may have been completed.

Well, it was a definite marathon but I planned for that from the beginning. A great read, well worth the time.

You mentioned also, at some point, that it was looking very like a World Conquest! :) Sforza!!! was NEVER intended as a world conquest, but it kinda sorta started going that direction. That, really, was its downfall -- I remember, after many years of playing, growing tired of the constant wars where I'd take several provinces from a massive empire and a few years later would have to re-fight the same battles just to take a few more provinces. The Russian Steppes wore me down -- just like they have many a conquerer. :D

Oh yeah, Civil Air Patrol was my life for 8 years. I did search and rescue (ground pounding mostly), but also alot of leadership and some flying. I finally realized I was failing my college classes because CAP was my priority, and I should probably reorder my priorities. lol

Thank you for reading and commenting! :D
