Stellaris Dev Diary #376 - Announcing BioGenesis and Stellaris: Season 09

Metal rusts. Flesh adapts.

It’s my great pleasure to announce the start of Stellaris: Season 09, with the BioGenesis expansion leading the way alongside the Stellaris 4.0 ‘Phoenix’ update.

The future of evolution is here. BioGenesis continues our remastering of the Ascension Paths by granting you unprecedented power over life itself and hatches May 5th, 2025.

Evolution had its chance. Now it’s our turn.

Two Biological Shipsets

Command living fleets that evolve alongside your empire. Customize these genetic marvels for specialized roles, from ferocious Maulers to adaptable support Weavers, each capable of empowering allies and weakening foes.

Overhauled Genetic Ascension

Choose from three Ascension paths (Cloning, Purity, and Mutation) and over 18 enhanced Authorities. Customize your genetic ascension by blending Purity, Cloning, and Mutation traditions into a unique path for your play style.

Hives with a Twist

Encounter a Hive Fallen Empire, a fractured hive mind struggling to awake between its three splintered personalities.

Six New Civics
  • Genetic Identification, Crowdsourcing, Familiar Face, Aerospace Adaptation, Shared Genetics, Civil Education
Deep Space Citadel Megastructure

A versatile new defensive station capable of holding off powerful enemy fleets at any system.

Behemoth Fury Crisis Path

The apex predators of the stars are not bound by petty limitations. Cast off the biological weaknesses that hold you back, and become a force of nature.

Since we can use both shipsets simultaneously I think it makes kinda sense that there isn't a shipset for any specific species type

It probably means that the shipsets actually do different things and aren't just basic shipsets like the regular ones
Where does it say Bio and metal ship sets at the same time?

Doubt it, the Psionics already have Patrons to add variety. I hop those will be improved upon to be more interesting and interactive.

I noticed this on the steam page for Shadows of the Shroud:

  • Breaching the Shroud unfolds as a three-stage situation, where your decisions will determine your empire’s spiritual destiny and determine your attunement to specific Patrons in the Shroud.

So, yes, it might actually have three ascension paths, but it might still be limited to all three having patrons, which I don't want, as there should be an option to be psionic without a shroud patron.

The devs (allegedly XD) said that we can use both of the BIO shipsets simultaneously

No clue if you can use bio and metal ships simultaneously though

Then again, why shouldn't you? There's literally nothing else to do with alloys unless we have come full circles and are turning food into alloys with catalytic processing and then turning our alloys into food via bioships

There's FIVE patrons though

And the screenshots show that to some degree the architect of clay will even mess with machine empires

Edit: also it already works via a situation, a situation during which you can just tell your patron "No!"

Yes, so, at the moment, things aren't clear. But think of it like this: the Machine Age DLC had "situations"... Wait... I can't remember now... Was it three different situations, or was it one situation, with three different outcomes? If the latter, then this might be similar to the Shadows of the Shroud DLC - I'm hoping.

It's one situation during which you try all three paths to a degree and if you waste some resources you even get a special planet modifier on your capital for each of three paths, regardless of your final choice

That psionic situation just has three consecutive steps, not three parallel steps

Fantastic content!

And it's great that the devs are listening to the community, that's the best way to make Stellaris great.

The concepts are very promising, we hope the execution matches the expectations.

Finally, while the expasions are great, please don't de-prioritize overhauling critical game concepts like warfare, trade, logistics, espionage, and others.

- Infernals in the header image are all wearing armor
- The trailer shows Infernal soldiers marching
=> Ground combat rework anyone?
Oh please, most species are wearing armor, suits or clothing
Also First Contact used a lot of images with ground combat when the birds pushed out the Slavers because they will never take OUR FREEDOM! ⚔️

At the very least, there should be an option for psionic species to outright reject all alliances with the Shroud entities and carve their own path without missing on content. A separate event, perhaps.
Psionic Death Cults should have a sacrificial edict for turning pops into Zro, which can then be used for other things.
(Death Cults should get a covenant sacrificial edict, also, if they choose to lean that way.)

5th May, it's in the original post.
2025-5-5, at 5:55?

Hmm... That's worrisome. I really hope that the end product (the DLC) will have three different ascension paths for psionics. If the devs are reading this, would you reconsider adding this in if it's not already there... pretty please?

Psionic ascension already has 4 paths, and they will add a fifth (probably a sixth independent path too)

I 100% agree on this. Patrons should always be a choice that you get to make once you breach the shroud, not something you are railroaded into. That said,. I dont believe that devs would do that. It should always be possible to psionic just as is.

As to the topic: Everything looks cool and interesting, although I worry how much a foundational change such as the pop change is going to break things, and how dangerous it is to speedrun through such a change. Im not opposed to the change itself. I already heard some rumblings that trade works weird because the changes are implemented only halfway.

You know what would be fun? Living ships psionically connected to the empire.

Wow, that's truly an impressive roadmap! Lots of amazing surprises and things to comment!

- Super stoked about phenotype traits. Yes, bring me sweet, sweet species uniqueness!
- Intrigued about the whole "mix and match" bio ascension approach between the purity, mutation, and cloning paths. It sounds as if you might do many at once?
- Super giddy about the new advanced authorities.
- I really do hope that there is one "meat" shipset and another "arboreal" one, so I can roleplay my good and bad bio-ascended boys
- I def did not expect the citadel megastructure, but it sure is a cool addition
- Fractured hivemind sounds like an extremely original take on the whole "fallen empire hivemind". It sounds amazing
- Meh @ the new crisis path. So we are going to blow the galaxy again, but with different weapon flavors? Whatever, man. I just want to bring the galaxy towards utopia, not anhilation
- Infernals coming with their own unique worlds makes me interested in a species pack for the first time ever, so good job!
- I really, REALLY hope that you might now go psionic without needing to submit to an eldritch horror in order to make the best out of it
- Psionic robots. Hell. Yeah.
- That one-eyed beholder looks like a psionic pethoryn, just saying. A psionic hivemind, perhaps?
- Super-intrigued about psionic auras. I really hope that you can have extremely different versions of psionically ascended empires. Warhammer 40K is great, but I also want my X-Men, Bene-Gesserits, and Jedis.
- Really, just give me details about my favourite ascension!

That's probably just the default state of any meatship owned by a hivemind or a psionic empire

Hell, we already have a few synth traits that have flavor text about them connecting to their ships - pretty sure the dude who's just an upper body has something like that
