Tinto Maps #6 Great Britain & Ireland Feedback

9 September 2024 12 May 2025

What an exciting week we have had, and best of all I finally get to say the name Europa Universalis V. It still feels weird in my mouth after carefully saying Caesar for what feels like a lifetime.

But lo, the day is finally come for the British Isles feedback thread. This short update was supposed to come out a few months ago, but I just had to teach some of you a lesson. Also I had a lot of other things on, like appearing in the announcement show last week.

Here we see the updated topography:

The updated vegetation:

Many impassable barriers have been added, for example the various peaks of the Pennines and the Wicklow Mountains. The Shannon also now poses a more significant barrier between east and west Ireland, with only a few crossing points often guarded by stockades.

Here we have the Locations map, bear in mind they are only showing the default English names but many places have Gaelic or Brythonic versions.

Every country has had a general increase in density.

England, in particular the south, has had a big revamp at Location and Province level to more accurately reflect the historical counties, many of them pre-Norman in origin and many of them still in use today in some form. Westminster as a capital has been killed and rolled into a monolithic London.

And political mapmode (with overlord colouring off):

And Dynasties:

We have added the Earldom of Orkney in the northern isles as a Norwegian vassal. Meanwhile the Palatinate of Durham and Chester have both been promoted from a special set of buildings to vassals under England. Wales has also been limited strictly to the Principality of Wales, with the marcher lords existing as very low control locations under England.

Ireland has had a major rework in terms of locations and tags. Mostly there have been minor Irish chieftaincies added. As always we are grateful to the many suggestions that have come from the forumers.

Culture:

The most obvious culture change is that English has had Northumbrian split off, to represent the divide between southern and northern dialects and attitudes. A practical example of this is how in the south the English are more friendly to Normans, whereas the Northumbrians hate them (the northern shires still bear the scars of the Harrying of the North). Northumbrians and Scots also spoke a similar form of English in this period, so it helps to set them up as a sort of middleman.

Norwegians in northern Scotland and the nearby North Atlantic have also been split into Norn.

As a bonus, Court Language, showing 3 main worlds: Gaelic, Anglo-French, and Roman Catholic Bishoprics.

There have also been some changes to Raw Goods, as you can see here:

We still have time to make some changes, so let us know what we can do to push this even further towards where it needs to be.

I won’t show Population numbers right now, as it’s pending a proper rework. Among other things, the idea is to reduce the population numbers in England.

Will the Anglo-Norman Lords in Ireland have a chance to accept Irish as their primary culture? The interesting thing about these lords is that they very quickly took up Irish customs, which is where the saying "More Irish than the Irish themselves" comes from. Or perhaps it could make sense to have a hybrid culture be their main culture?

Edit: Perhaps this was already addressed

Cinque Ports are a special building that starts in some southeastern port locations and there;s some additional content surrounding them. The City of London also has a special building to represent the ancient liberties of the guilds.
Do you use special buildings such as these outside of Britain too (so far, you have only confirmed these in Scotland for the clans and now for London) to model special privileges of local groups? The Seats of the Cumans, Székelys, and Transylvanian Saxons come to mind, for example (whose special status hasn't been confirmed by Pavía, even though they should have something)

Anglo-norman lords referred to themselves as Irish or "Éireannaigh", It literally makes no sense

Love the Greenland buff. More Scandinavian heritage tags -> more tags to siphon off pops from for Greenland and Iceland.

Also, not sure if this is the best place to ask, but the ‘Celtic Traditions’ government reform available to Gaelic and Brythonic courts specifies ‘Can be member of a High Kingship’. Would this imply that there are more High Kingships than just Ireland, or is it just the way the localisation is written?

At first glance this all looks good and seems to have incorporated the changes to England I was most concerned about.

However, I still think that the hills in Kent are in the wrong place. I've written about those here and think that these should be in Tonbridge rather than Canterbury and Dover - the Isle of Thanet was still an island during this time frame, so hills feel wrong and given Dover covers Thanet, this should be flatlands or wetlands. Canterbury remains flat up to the north Kent coast, so that should also be flatlands. The hills (Kent Downs) are to the south of Canterbury, hence more appropriate for Tonbridge, and possibly Hythe (though I also understand why this is now wetlands).

Otherwise all looks good, thank you.

Hi SaintDaveUk Thank you so much for the long awaited feedback.

I think mostly its a really good job for Ireland. Two Gripes I still have that there is only 4 Farmlands locations on the whole Island of Ireland? Seems a tad low IMO.

And again with "Irish" culture. Especially what was shown in youtuber demo videos, Ríocht of Éire can be formed and the Kingdom of Ireland as well. This is so Jarring having "Irish" culture. This really should be called Gaelic I can link my post here. The long and short of it being

1. Its what the Native People of Ireland called themselves
2. The Anglo-Norman Lords called themselves Irish as they integrated into Gaelic Society. If you have that distinction why not properly describe it as such?
3. Other indigenous peoples such as the Iroquois as known in common parlance have their Native name used as shown in teaser map posts
4. Other Gaelic cultures like Norse-Gael are used why cant we accurately describe the people Gaels in Ireland as such
5. Highland should be renamed to Highland-Gael so we can see that all three cultures are deeply connected to each other

Thank you for addressing the feedback and the flavour that you have personally worked on for Ireland it's genuinely amazing, but, this is still a bone of contention for me. Is there a reason why this was ignored?
If they rename highland to highland gael, so scots be renamed scots english for peoole to understand their link?

British Isles looking ripe for a Glorious Revolution. Keeping Britain rural to feed tonnes of wool to the manufacturies in the Low Countries.

Really disappointed that Welsh marcher lords and Scottish highland earls don't have their own tags. They had significant independence and fought well known feuds amongst themselves.

Also, the Isles still holds Arran in 1337, which they should not hold for decades yet.
But as that tag, youre not going to be able to achieve much but just some minor raiding, before integration

Yooo norn culture! What culture groups is it in, is it just in the Norse culture group or is it also part of the Scottish group? Maybe there is a group with just Norn and Iceland of the insular Norse?
