Tinto Flavour #19 - 20th of May 2025

Hello and Welcome to another Tinto Flavor! This time, I have been forced to write it, as I am the one responsible for the country we will learn about today.

Today, we are going to delve into all the fun flavor that you get from playing Sweden! But prior to that, just remember to wishlist https://store.steampowered.com/app/3450310/Europa_Universalis_V/ !

Sweden is a feudal kingdom under the rule of Magnus Eriksson, who also holds the crown of Norway. Skåne was bought from the impoverished Danes just a few years ago. Our realm is vast, but sparsely populated, and mostly covered by forests. Inside those forests, riches of iron and copper remain hidden, but can soon be exploited to enrich our country.

Mostly Catholic Swedes, but there are plenty of different Finnish people as well. Even a few Norse pagans live in the inland forests.

The King is not only ugly, he also has shitty stats. 33/0/33 is a bit boring numbers though, so feel free to suggest any fitting variants within +/-10 of it.

map.png

Sweden is large on the map, but very different from the modern borders of the country.

Sweden starts with a relatively powerful Commoners estate, as they are both represented in the Riksdag and have the privilege to freely move.

estates.png

They also have a unique privilege for the Commoners:

unique_commoner.png

This one requires quite a lot of crown power to remove, and while it's active, you can not remove free mobility and their representation in parliament either. Luckily, a bit more food and better fighting levies are not all bad..

Sweden also has access to this unique cabinet action that can be done in any province in Norrland or Finland that has a total population of less than 10,000 people. This is to simulate the insane population growth that Finland had during the 14th and 15th century, which was the highest in the world at that time.

cabinet.png

While Sweden does not start with any Works of Art, it has a unique bonus in Falun, where the Great Copper Mountain gives a lot of extra copper per laborer working there.

kopparberget.png

Sweden gets two unique units in the Age of Absolutism:

hakkapelitta.png

This cavalry unit has +5 initiative, +10% movement speed and +1 combat speed compared to the regular cavalry units of this age.

caroleans.png

Caroleans have +2 initiative, do 10% more morale damage and take 20% less morale damage.

These units enable a Swedish army to have the possibility of quickly and decisively winning battles in the Age of Absolutism, which was the time period where Sweden had its military successes historically.

While you get these units from advances, there are also plenty of other advances that Sweden has access to. Some of these include the following..

1_advance.png

The mentality of always attacking is an important one! GÅ PÅ!

2_advance.png

A quality government involved both the King and the Estates.

3_advance.png

This used to be a sign of quality….

4_advance.png

One of the greatest scientists of the Age of Absolutism.

Advances alone do not always give enough flavor, so there are plenty of dynamic historical events as well.

While Sweden starts with a historical saint in Erik the Holy, there are others presented as well in the game.

saints.png

After this event, close to the start of the game, where Bridget of Sweden first appears…

birgitta_1.png

Eventually, after she dies, you get this event.

birgitta_2.png

She will become a saint, and you have the possibility to get a minor holy site for the Catholic Faith in Vadstena!

Some of the other over 60 unique historical events include the following..

Tomorrow, @SaintDaveUK will talk about how our unit graphics work..

I think it might be because King Magnus styled himself as King of Sweden, Norway and Scania, elevating it to a kingdom-tier title in his eyes
Did he officially elevated Scania into a kingdom or he just used the title together with the other two? Also can you give me a link to where you found this info please?
Also it's still kinda weird considering that Scania it's a fief and not a PU

Will there be any events or other type of flavour related to the Kalmar Union?

Also does the event for the founding of Göteborg appear when the player makes a town in that location, or will it trigger once certain conditions are met?

Lastly, will Erik Dahlbergh be a character? If not I think that Johan should reconsider after re-reading "Ofredsår".

Will there be mechanics ( national missions ) related to New Sweden and other possessions in the new world in the future ?

Also im not sure this has been talked about , but will the AI have some of these elements ? like will Sweden do Sweden things when controlled by AI , will France do what youd expect France to try and do historically ?

0.6-0.8 is pretty low for Ireland, I thought it was above 1 million in 1300?
Irelands huge population growth came mostly in the 18th century, though, a time when much of Europe grew rapidly thanks to improved agricultural technology. England reached a similar growth rate as well.
So that should be a lategame thing based on technology, while growth in Finland is something for the early game when the population is still low.
Well, in the tinto maps they did for Ireland they gave the island about 800k in population, you might be right, but I am basing my numbers off what they use in the game.

You are completely correct that the population started to skyrocket in the 1800s before the famine, but it's also worth keeping in mind that that the structural conditions that allowed for growth (huge amounts of very arable land that allows Ireland to produce food for 40 million people today) existed, and the same levels of growth could have also been seen were it not for the constant invasions of the island and other colonial meddling, like the Cromwellian wars killed about 20% of the population and the 1740 famine killed another 20% (while there were net food exports to Britain). So it would be kind of arbitrary to magically increase the island's growth with the introduction of the potato when it always supported a larger population with other crops but those crops were exported. (I'm assuming a run here where you undo colonial rule)

Hi Johan,

Thank you for all of your work and this brilliant tinto flavour!

I wanted to ask if this treatment is entirely unique to Finland or are there mechanisms to account for other countries' disproportionately high population growth, for example Ireland had their population grow from 0.6 – 0.8 million in 1300 to 7.9 million in 1831, a 13x on population growth that I believe is similar to Finland's? Thank you again!
Some estimates have the population of Ireland even higher than that ill see if I can find that info out though.

This information was taken from the Swedish Wikipedia page for Magnus Eriksson, where it refers to him as "Kung av Skåne" (King of Scania") which cites sources that only skimmed. I am no professional historian, unfortunately

We appreciate that you highlight what makes these units special, as special units that were showcased before, for the most part, didn't appear to have been any special (notorious example: the Black Army [likely the most elite corps of late 15th century Europe, heavily armoured in plate, using a large portion of hangunners and pavisors] and the Ethiopuan Çäwa [much less heavily and less notorious, even if still very respectable] had the exact same unit stats). I know that this is likely because the game is WIP and not all units are balanced, but still nice that you could highlight what exactly makes them unique.

With all these insanely heavy buffs, how great does Sweden's copper/steel output end up being by the late game compared to the rest of the world?

How many saints do you have in the game? Do you have every major saint, or at least every major saint royal?

And I believe this is the first time you mentioned the existence of "minor" Holy Sites. How many are there of these, and where? Does sanctifying people always create new ones?

I wish the devs didn't change the city size to look so small. They are way too small now and you can barely see any buildings at maximum zoom in my opinion. I think the cities would look perfect if they were halfway between this size and the way they were before. I edited the picture and I think about this size on maximum zoom looks just right:

Changing the ruling dynasty of a medieval kingdom seems quite important to me, so maybe that could be a game condition?
If the ruling dynasty changes then the flag does to the three crowns until the age of reformation when the current flag was adopted

that happens a lot though, and makes it very confusing for players, as we use the flags as identifiers..

Regarding this event, does this mean that only Sweden would be able to discover this silver? If I'm playing as either Norway or Denmark (or anyone else), I would not be able to utilize this silver?

Probably best to add this to the Ireland Feedback page this is about Swedish Flavour

Most of that was in later ages. Finlands before 1500 was the highest in the world.
