Tinto Flavour #21 - 26th of May 2025

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Mondays (some), Tuesdays & Fridays in which we take a look at the flavour content of Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will take a look at the two most powerful Merchant Republics of Europe, Venice and Genoa!

Let’s start taking a look at Venice:

The Most Serene Republic of Venice is the most important and powerful of the merchant republics in the Mediterranean Sea. It controls important trade ports and islands in the Eastern Mediterranean, which form the Stado do Mar, and many inland territories in the North of Italy, which form the Domini di Terraferma.

Nonetheless, the lagoon city cannot lower its guard, as new threats arise around it. In the East, the once great Byzantine Empire will not easily forget the Fourth Crusade and the Venetian involvement in it. In the West, the Superb Republic of Genoa and the Crown of Aragon are continuing to expand their influence, conquering more territory and dominating trade routes. And at last, the Signoria of Verona have grown to be a noticeable threat to the Domini di Terraferma.

What will the future hold for the Most Serene Republic? Will it fall under the pressure of its enemies, or will it rise to the top and become the indisputable ruler of the Mare Nostrum?

The 3 subjects of Venice are Candia, Ragusa, and Trieste. As usual, take any UI, 2D and 3D art as WIP.

As you may have seen in one of my forum posts or Reddit, Venice is now an island! Here you also have the full extension of its Stado de Mar, with all its subjects (which, at the highest zoom levels, have their name replaced by that of the overlord, as it happens here with Candia).

Venice is a very unique Republic, which starts with some unique reforms and privileges at the start of the game:

Venice Privilege Libro dOro.png

It also hosts some works of art, some of them sacked from Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade:

Here is a selection of the advances available for Venice:

And a few of its flavour events:

Let’s now take a look at Genoa:

The city of Genoa stands out as the most important commercial port in the Western Mediterranean, its Republic having expanded its influence overseas through trade and war.

After defeating the Republic of Pisa, it gained the island of Corsica and established a foothold in Sardinia. However, this might have been a poisonous gift, as it may now face not only the opposition of its inhabitants, but also that of King Pere IV the Ceremonious de Barcelona, self-proclaimed sovereign of both islands.

Another challenge may arise from the east, as a network of possessions has created the conditions for a commercial dominance over the Black Sea, centered around the port of Kaffa; although dangerous neighbors such as Venice, Byzantium, or the Golden Horde might be a threat.

Relying on our numerous Fondaco and wealthy bankers, will Genoa overcome these challenges?

The Genoese ‘mainlad’, plus its Mediterranean possessions.

Genoa also starts with a couple of unique reforms:

Since we’re not able to have two or more rulers for a country in the game, we’re portraying the Genoese Diarchy by having Galeotto Spinola and Raffaello Doria present as characters at start, and the bonuses you see in the reform.

Genoa also starts with some Works of Art:

It also has a quite important unique building:

And here you have some of the unique advances:

Here you have some of the flavour events of Genoa:

An old EU4 friend, coming back in a revisited form!

Oh, and last, but not least, and related to the Byzantine content that we’ll take a look at on Friday, both countries have some unique foreign buildings in Constantinople:

… And much more, but that’s all for today! And tomorrow, there will be a Tinto Flavour devoted to Serbia and Georgia!

And also remember, you can wishlist Europa Universalis V now! Cheers!

Oh that's really interesting. So Maritime presence affects advantage. Is there such thing as foreign maritime presence? So say for instance that as Venice I put my fleet to patrol the coast of Egypt. Do I get trade advantage from that? Would my maritime presence in the coast of Egypt be different from the one the Mamluks get? Or would I be paying with my fleet just for their maritime presence to go up for free at my expense?

That sounds really cool and makes having a big fleet very important, so with a few foreign buildings and a big fleet I can get control of foreign markets like it happened with the Portuguese and Dutch in Africa and India and Indonesia. Hyped!

Are you going to put Ligurian and Venetian as dynamic languages/dialects in game? Because it seems to me that most Italian locations have standard Italian names mixed with English

How is trade income scheme for these Republics looking like in EUV? Genoa is facilitating goods export e.g. from Kaffa to Constantinople, generating profit? Then Venice reins in, facilitating trade from East Mediterranean upwards to Europe?

I'm sure this has been answered already, but what happens to unique buildings when another TAG conquers their location? So if the ottomans conquer a location with a Fondaco, what happens to it?

And also, can you build your unique buildings on your subject's land?

Love to see the sea colour changes.
I am not so sure about the mixture of 2d and 3d maps like this, though it does highlight the country very nicely.
This setting mixes 3D and 2D low to mid zoom levels, and then it's fully 2D. I've used the last 3D/2D level here to highlight the Genoese holdings, the map would look like this, just one zoom level over this one:

Is there any colonial flavor planned, as Columbus was (probably) Genoese and both Venice and Genoa as merchant republics could potentially be interested in trade routes to the new world?

There's a bug related to that, they are designed to give that benefit to the owner of the building in the market of the location.
Ok, but then what is the benefit to ERE ? Is it just something they let stay because it makes Venetia and Genoa happy ?

Personally I love the coexistence of 2D and 3D, with varying degrees regarding the zoom, especially now that the game has so much depth, so many provinces etc.

Anyway Pavia, you are always replying with extreme care, time to ask for a raise.

Is there any like semi formable Venice can form, like maybe a unique variant of Italy or The Serenissma like in eu4? Also I believe historically there was an event where Verona agreed to become Venice’s vassal, devotion of Verona I think it’s called.

Thanks Pavia and Dave for the quick reply!
I can see the potential of this setting* as a good YT thumbnail generator...

Not yet, but it may be something that we may potentially take a look at doing in the future.

Thank you for your answer. May I suggest that you consider perhaps doing this for other micro-states as well? (like fan favorite San Marino)

We already have them; it just takes a lot of time to have a comprehensive list of dialect names in-game:

Hello
UI related comment on the Unit stats screen
Would it be possible to have a comparaison to the "base" unit if the value changes in the tooltip instead ?
For example : Transport Capacity 25 (+5 from base 20), but other lines unchanged
Thanks !
