Tinto Flavour #22 - 27th of May 2025

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays in which we take a look at the flavour content of Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will take a look at two Orthodox countries, in advance of tomorrow’s Tinto Talks: Serbia & Georgia.

Let’s start by taking a look at Serbia:

Serbia encompasses fertile lowlands and plains in the north, crisscrossed by the mighty Danube and Sava rivers. In the south, the landscape transforms into rugged, forested terrain and, eventually, the towering Dinaric Alps.

The realm emerged as a significant regional power under the Nemanjić dynasty. Founded by Stefan Nemanja in the 12th century, this royal lineage laid the foundations for a unified Serbian state, began to solidify its Christian Orthodox identity, and sought to establish ecclesiastical autonomy. This effort culminated in 1219 when the Serbian Orthodox Church gained independence.

Under the rule of Stefan 'the First-Crowned', Serbia’s territorial expansion accelerated, and the acquisition of coastal regions on the Adriatic Sea secured access to maritime trade and introduced Western influences. Stefan's son, King Radoslav, promoted the country's cultural development, fostering education and art, and monasteries like Studenica and Žiča flourished, housing precious religious manuscripts and frescoes.

Despite the many recent advancements, Serbia now faces external pressures and internal divisions. The Mongol invasion in the 13th century inflicted significant damage and conflict within the ruling Nemanjić family, particularly between King Stefan Uroš II Milutin Nemanjić and his brother King Stefan Dragutin Nemanjić, further weakening the state's unity. Now, the strong rule of King Stefan Uroš IV Dušan Nemanjić appears as an opportunity to change the tides of history.

Let’s now take a look at Georgia:

Georgian people are proud and with a long history, for their ancestors were already living at the foot of the Caucasus even before the old empires of ancient antiquity were formed. They were among the first to embrace Christianity, and they made it their flag and identity. Even after the expansion of Islam, and being surrounded by heathen nations, they held their faith and became a bulwark of Christianity in the midst of the connection between East and West.

Not even the Mongol hordes of Činggis Khān managed to fully subjugate its people, for the Georgian people rose again in defiance once the Mongol threat waned. Having been united once before under a great kingdom, the Georgian people have the potential to achieve great heights once again.

The country had its greatest splendor during the rule of King Davit IV the Builder Bagrationi and Queen Tamar the Great Bagrationi. Now, after having been divided, the Kingdom of Georgia is once again united under the authority of King Giorgi V the Brilliant Bagrationi, after His Majesty conquered western Georgia and reasserted his rule over all the Georgian territory. Even Armenia bows now to the power of Georgia.

Although still technically subject to the Īlkhānān, it in itself is an empty husk, with no one to actually lead it. Under these circumstances, how could Georgia not rise again greater than ever before?

Absolutely love the priviledge and advances shown, did you consider having the balkan hajduks give maybe even more morale, but reduce discipline ? Also, what is "prime promotion cost" ? And how does one ends the stefan malediction disaster / what happens while it is active (aside from the existing modifiers being applied) ?

In fact, the Caucasus has permanent snow and glaciers, and in my opinion it would look fantastic in game, not only in these areas, but, of course in all the mountains around the globe.

As an example, here's a satellite image of the Caucasus and its surroundings, where snow/glaciers are visible.

Agreed, snowy peaks are sth that is currently missing in EU5 map, but I'm optimistic they will be added, now that the height map is more glorious than ever!
It would be great to see the tips of Himalayas and the Alps covered in snow, for sure!

In terms of art for Georgia, I suggest creating an artist called Damiane.

He was a very well-known painter from the 14th century, and would've been alive in 1337. His masterpiece being the decorations of the Ubisi Cathedral.

In terms of historical art, I suggest giving Georgia the Gelati Monastery as a masterpiece. It was the Reims of Georgia in a sense, as the monarchs were typically crowned there.

And perhaps also the Khakhuli triptych as a regionally well-known piece.

Edit: I almost forgot to suggest some art in the form of literature - the Knight in the Panther's Skin, a masterpiece of chivalric romance, should definitely be added too.

Are there events dealing with Serbs/Serbia after the medieval period? Ones about the Great Serb Migrations that significantly impacted the ethnic picture of the region, or about the great Serbian revolts late in the game?

They don't have flavour localization, so feel free to post a suggestion. The parliament is called 'Darbazi', BTW.
I came prepared: I have already made a post about that on the Persia and Caucasus thread.

Countries:Georgia, Samtskhe, Alast'ani, Shaki (?).
Estate localisations:
Estate:Localisations:
Crownსამეფო/ტახტი // Samepo/Takhti (the kingdom/the throne).
Nobilityდიდებულნი/დიდებულები // Didebulni/Didebulebi (the nobles/the nobility, lit. the great ones).
Clergyსამღვდელოება // Samghvdeloeba (lit. the clergy).
Burghersმოქალაქენი // Mokalakeni (archaic for citizenry, designating city-dwellers).
Commonersგლეხობა // Glekhoba (lit. the peasantry).
Country localisations:
Rank:Country rank:Male title:Female title:
Empireდიდი სამეფო/იმპერია // Didi Samepo/Imperia (great kingdom/empire)*.მეფეთა-მეფე/იმპერატორი // Mepeta-mepe/Imperatori (king of kings/emperor)*.დედოფალთა-დედოფალი/იმპერატრიცა // Dedopalta-dedopali/Imperatritsa (queen of queens/empress)*.
Kingdomსამეფო // Mepe (lit. kingdom).მეფე // Mepe (lit. king).დედოფალი // Dedopali (lit. queen).
Duchyსაერისთავო/სამთავრო // Saeristavo/Samtavro (lit. the domain of the eristavi/lit. the domain of the mtavari)**.ერისთავი/მთავარი // Eristavi/Mtavari (lit. the head of the people/the head)**.The consorts of great lords used different titles†.
CountyNo equivalent in Georgian tradition***.No equivalent in Georgian tradition***.The consorts of great lords used different titles†.
Notes:* There was no real concept of an empire or an emperor in Georgian tradition (until the 19th century, of course). While the Georgian king was known as the King of Kings, the realm he ruled over was still known as a kingdom. Hence, I suggest using the clunkier, but more accurate Great Kingdom, rather than the anachronistic but more applicable Emperor.

** The titles of regional rulers changed during the timespan of the game. According to Mikaberidze (2007), the Mtavari was a: "Grand noble or dynastic prince. Initially, the term was similar to eristavi or tavadi, but starting in the 15th century, it was applied only to the very few powerful ruling houses of Georgia. Even among these grand nobles, the title was reserved for the head of the undivided house only."

*** There is no real equivalent to the title of count in Georgian tradition. For gameplay purposes, I suggest using the name of Satavado for Georgian-culture county-level countries. Historically, it was equated to the Russian Knyaz, and therefore to the western Herzog. In-in game terms, this would be the most appropriate localisation for the title, perhaps to represent semi-sovereign rulers under the Georgian kings post-collapse.

† The consorts of great lords like Eristavis, Mtavaris, and Tavadis bore various different titles, based on their own personal prestige and political standing. For in-game consistency, I suggest using the common ქალბატონი // Kalbatoni (lit. female lord).

Did you forget to write the post or something? Upload the first draft and not the right one? It's just a list of pictures.
You might notice it's a trend I'm following, because I think that now that all/most of the systems and mechanics are explained, and how the flavour content works in general terms, the screenshots are quite self-descriptive of what can be found in the game (plus, our lovely nested tooltips!).

I'm a bit concerned with the post Stefan uros disaster.

The historical route is that the domain was broken up into many smaller domains belonging to his family members, not that native rebellions made it collapse.

Is there any way for these Serbian-led statelets in Bulgaria and Greece to spawn? By event?

I really hope that there will be a option to not show your ruler in the events/ the top left (replaced by a bigger flag) it also feels misleading on how important rulers are( as the top left and them being in events will lead me to assume that they will be very important), how important will they be to your nation other then how big their "skill points" are?

My only complaint here is that the current Serbian flag is wrong and this one down here is the accurate one

I mean the eagle is fine as it is in game, but the colours should be changed
While i agree, i also think the current one is good too, because 1.The Yellow one is tied specifically to Dušan, and 2.The red and white is tied to us much longer and the game is spanning 5 centuries.

I'm not sure whether this is the right place to talk about this, but it seems to me that Georgia's population is far too low. Just 600K people in Georgia proper (excluding Alastani and Samtskhe) seems odd to me.

I strongly suggest rethinking that decision. I've already written of this here.
