I think it should be Empire of the Romans unless you play as them. If you play as them the country name becomes “Greek Pretender State” and there should be no way to mod this out.

This should please everyone and lead to no outrage at all

The best part is this is the schizo thread so there is no way to know our true opinion on the Greek Pretenders

They should obviously be called the Palailogan Empire, or the Palaloilogans, to imitate their successor state the Ottomans!

(I am certain I butchered the name, but I will not double check)

At this point, I just call it Byzantines to piss off these people. It's even more funny calling them "Byzantophiles".

In all seriousness though, there is a hitoriographic sense in calling them "Byzantines", as it's specifically referring to the Roman Empire of the middle ages.
Calling it "Roman Empire" would include a too broad of a timespan (~1500 years), and there's little sense in calling a "Eastern Rome" after the fall of the West.
And now I just realize how I'm about to get a dozen angry replies and 100 "respectfully disagrees".
In serious though I do agree with the second part, whilst the Byzantines are undisputably Roman they are also indispensably distinct from the earlier Romans, and as such calling them a different (if erroneous) name is useful

Especially in game terms because because otherwise what do you call the revolter tag for Rome itself if not Rome (and my schizo opinion is it should just be the Roman empire tag as the revolter tag for the ultimate hard game)

Calling them a different name is arbitrary and confusing rather than useful. It leads people (and was invented) to think they were not Romans. As to distinction from earlier Romans, why not stop calling it Rome when it converted to Christianity? That was very distinct. Or when the capital moved to Milan? If it is about language, why do we call Hellenic/Kemetic/Aramaic etc speakers Romans before 476?

Like the timeline is (Pagan, Hellenic language, self-ID Roman) = (Roman), (Christian, Hellenic language, self-ID Roman before 476) = (Roman), (Christian, Hellenic language, self-ID Roman after 476) = (Byzantine). What changed so much from 475 to 477, the temporary loss of a city that hadn't been the capital in decades?

Is there an obvious point when it changes? No, but as you yourself have just said there are clear differences between the different points. Is it just as accurate to say the late Roman empire, the Greco-Roman Empire? Yes

But names are not logical things and Byzantium is a nice name that means a reasonably specific thing. And in regards to what the Romans themselves referred to themselves, it's important but not the most important thing. The game uses the modern English name style for basically every other state in game, the Romans already get the exception.

Man with all this arguing about the name of the Roman cosplayers I think it'll be a great idea for every patch to introduce increasingly nonsensical names for Byzantium.
