Looks like I posted this in the Stellaris main boards first, so here's a second try.
I was doing the Sublight Exploration Probe collection event chain and had one of them spawn the hostile Subspace Anomaly upon discovery. I let it sit there alone in a system with one mining station until a pirate fleet spawned in the system in question.
I sent a defense fleet in for my mining station, but the pirates ran into the subspace anomaly on the way to the station and engaged it. After a few moments, I joined in with my fleet and finished off first the anomaly, and then the pirates. Once both were dead, I got event popups for a third party having destroyed the anomaly along with the probe and for destroying the anomaly and recovering the probe safely, granting me +2 progress on the event chain (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20391711/Stellaris/double_event.jpg). When looking at the event chain information, it now shows three remaining out of the four original systems left to search, as it should, but 2/4 probes recovered. Have not yet tested if I would be able to prematurely complete the event.
