1.03 patch doesn't recognize my executable

I downloaded the appropriate 1.00 to 1.03 patch, and attempted to apply it to a clean 1.00 install: no luck. All proceeds well until near the end of the install, when a small dialog box appears stating that the EU2 executable on my hard drive "is not a valid previous version, and cannot be upgraded." Which doesn't make any sense at all, since it most certainly *is* a valid version, straight out of the box. Any ideas?

Most certainly this is a support issue, although if the problem can be reproduced, it could be a bug. As Johan pointed out a few days ago, Paradox are not responsible for bugs in the installer, although I'm sure somebody should be able to help in the support forum if only they have as much info as possible from you so as to try to reproduce or diagnose the problem.

Can you give a bit more info, including:
- Operating system
- Directory to which you installed the game
- Are there any special drivers or applications running in the background
- Size (and CRC if you know how to find it), of the executable straight out of the box.

Are you using the right version of the patch? There is a North American and a Scandinavian version.

That's all I can think of.

The original game was installed to my D:\Program Files\Strategy First\Europa Universalis 2 directory; so was the patch. (I use my C:\ drive for a core of non-movable programs.) No TSRs are running in the background save those absolutely required by Windows 98. The size of the original executable is 2.678 KB, with a date of 10/31/01.

I wasn't aware that there is a North American and Scandanavian version of the 1.03 patch. Looking at Strategy First's download website, they only provide one patch from 1.00 to 1.03; I suspect because they deal exclusively with North American (both US and Canadian) audiences. Assuming this is the case, then my patch is the American variety.

I've just tried using the 1.00 to 1.02 patch, followed by the 1.02 to 1.03 patch, and that worked. So I'm up and running.

But my concern remains (for other people) about the 1.00 to 1.03 patch. I've tried that one four times, now, on fresh game iterations (each time, uninstalling all components, reinstalling, and running the patch), without success.

other people have just the opposite problem... only 1.00 to 1.03 works, 1.02 to 1.03 doesn't. Strange...
