Its just my opinion, but if, as Ravensfire has suggested, you must manually alter the registry pointer, the problem is with the patch, not the user-defined drives.
But if it works fine for other people to drives and paths other than the default (like me) you can't say for sure that the patch (or the original installer) is the problem.

These forums are great, and Castellon, you are a fantastic moderator, helper, and --- let's admit it: occassionally a freaking SAINT! Most of us could never have the patience to herd these cats, let alone repeatedly, but hmmm. I am neither an idiot nor inflexible (although you might want to check that with my wife) but have to concur that I have neither seen or experienced any problem with patches Paradoxian or otherwise regardless of whether I use default or non default directories UNTIL NOW. I run speed tests on EUII handsoff games to note balance, playtest other games, and well, I have a LOT of patches on three machines! I always use E on one machine, C or D on another machine, and on one the main drive is called L! Never a problem until HOI NA 1.04. From Paradox, I own EU, EUII and HOI. (I also own a few hundred other programs-some of them have patched too!). Its just my opinion, but if, as Ravensfire has suggested, you must manually alter the registry pointer, the problem is with the patch or the game installer, not the user-defined drives.

Nope, I can't get the NA patch to run on the drives not called "C". Now I am, for the third time on one machine, going to re-un-install and try one of the tedious workarounds instead of playing. I am a huuuge Paradox fan, and I very much like the game, but I am probably not the only person who may recall that once there was a different security program used in an original EUI patch and it ruined a lot of people's day until the problem was solved! We all make mistakes. Trust me, running a business, I make a lot of them. Paradox, perhaps having made two, (which is pretty close to zero for crissakes) might at least admit it!

edit:
P.S. As I recall that EUI security snafu was also an NA/Strategy First-only problem.
SSZ

SF does the installer for their version, vs Paradox for the others, So we really have no control over that. If you feel there is a problem, you would need to contact them directly.

And thank-you for your kind comments.

(grinning) Yes, well, it may be that you can add another to my tally of mistakes if that is true since it would be then that the two errors are in SF's corner. Two points to you!.

Jdrou,
your comments (as usual) are both wise and logically correct for most users. In my case, I have (as the Greeks would have termed it) "many" computers, about a half dozen of which I have scratch-built myself in the last year for either business or personal self-aggrandizement. ;)
C always worked, non c never worked. Op sys didn't seem to matter though I do not have many machines I game test on running XP since those are typically machines I give to employees (that they are hopefully doing "work" on!). While I am anal, I am not anal enough to go back and just randomly change the directory names for the purposes of helping out SF. (Although I would test op sys and bios by board-maker if Raven's fix wasn't so easy!). Ravensfire is my hero too!

Yes it is an easy fix, Once you know about it. :)

There should be an obvious entry for the directory, change it to point to your actual directory. This corrected the problem for me.

Good luck!

Risking to be considered totally dumb I would ask you to render more precisely the description of this very last step. I've never manually edited the registry before and am therefore afraid I could ruin something.

Once you have opened regedit, you have gone to the location as a subdirectory of Software (typically "StrategyFirst" unless you changed the default folder name) where you installed HOI. I have it in the same file as EUII which is the default name of StrategyFirst. Doubleclicking the StrategyFirst folder will allow you to see the subdirectory inside, one of which will be your HOI folder. Each time I speak of clicking on these icons, I refer to the folders as they appear on the left-hand side of your regedit screen. Once you have gotten to the HOI folder on the left hand side of your screen, click on it once and then look to the right-hand side of your screen.

You will see two lines (or you should see two lines!). The first one will say something like "Default" and the second (which is, pardon the pun, the "root" of your problem) reads something like "install path". The install path line will show you its location, and dollars to donuts, if you are having problems with the 1.04 install and your game is installed on a drive other than "C" the address you will see for the install path in your registry also probably reads "C:\program files\StrategyFirst\Hearts of Iron".
IF SO, your fix is simple. Right click on that second line. A pop-up box will offer you three changes: "delete" (DON'T CHOOSE THAT ONE!! ;) ) "rename" (uh, don't choose that one either!) and MODIFY. Choose Modify, and then in the pop-up that appears with the address, rename the address with the proper root letter. In my case I chose MODIFY, then placing the cursor in front of the letter "C" in the install path's location name that popped up, I hit backspace and then typed the letter "E" in tis place. Then hit "ok". exit from regedit by closing the screen. Presto, you're done! Should be able to load the 1.04 immediately. If not you might need to restart windows, but I didn't . Let me know if you have any trouble. You should note that many folks make copies of their registry files before fooling with them. Not a bad precaution.
Let us know if it worked?

Just to make it extra clear you may also have to change the rest of the path, not just the drive letter.
