Suddenly started getting crashes to desktop without error messages. Running unmodified EU version 1.08. I didn't have any problems whatsoever in a long GC game I just finished. However, in that game I controlled 70% of the map and there weren't many AI vs AI battles running. Now I have tried 3 scenarios and they crash every 3 years or so. I noticed it is more likely to occur when I bump it up to 1:4 time compression and when computer AI is fighting each other. I am usually not involved with any wars at the time.

My hardware is as follows:

Athlon 700
256 MB RAM
Guillemot TNT2 Riva graphics card- 32 MB RAM
SB Live! sound card
Matshita CR-539 32X CD-ROM drive
Western Digital 14GB hard drive with about 10GB free
Network card, Wacom tablet, USB Mouse, External Zip drive, and SCSI scanner card installed
Not running any anti-virus software or other applications
Windows 98
DirectX 8.0

A minor bug

Playing as Austria, I opened the "mission selection windows" and I picked "keep tyrol". At the same time, or better a few second before my action, the coputer assigned me the same mission. Result I had two times the "keep Tyrol" mission to accomplee within the 2999. Then I safed and reloaded the game and still the two mission, but the date was changed to 1578 (about a 25-30 years of time). Anyway after five years the mission(s) were expired and when I reselected "keep tyrol" now I had it twice by default. After a fifty years the problem disappeared.

No crashes so far...

Well since everyone else is reporting, I might do the same :)

I'm running EU 1.08SWE on a Toshiba Tecra 8000 (PII 400Mhz) laptop with Win2kPro, and have no problems at all. The game was a little 'sluggish' with the music constantly being read of the CD, so I turned that off. Now it plays like a dream, and I have spent several 5+ hour sessions with it.

I'm another one that is having so many crashes that I'm probably going to shelve the game and wait for a better patch before playing the game much, despite it being one of the best I've ever seen. I was getting some crashes in 1.07, so I figured I'd upgrade to 1.08 to improve things. Unfortunately it crashes even more after the 1.08 NA update. I've noticed when I crash to desktop that when I do a CTRL-ALT-DEL that there's always a program that is shown as ~ef7194, that wasn't there before. Generally when it crashes the computer will freeze up for 30 seconds or a minute and then it will work again. I've noticed that it crashes more when there's a lot of activity or it's later in the game (two are probably related). I've also gotten low on memory messages a few times when it crashes. Another strange thing is I don't get the music anymore (but do get the sound effects) regardless of if I have the music on or off. I even reinstalled the program and I still don't get the music. It also seems that the grand campaign has more problems that the few other scenarios I've tried. This is probably one of the quirkiest programs I've used in recent years and it's really too bad because when it works it's a great game. But when you have to save every month or two because of crashes, it get old.

Here are some specs on my computer:
HP Pavillion 844 (just bought it a couple of months ago)
850 Athlon
30 GB HD
192 MB RAM
48x Mitsui CD ROM
Sound card - Crystal WDM Audio Codec
Windows ME with latest patch from Microsoft

It's the standard configuration for the Pavillion 844 except I added 128 MB of RAM (to get to 192) and a firewire card.

Again, it's a great program and I hope that these crash problems can get straightened out soon.

No more crashes

I had lots of desktop crashes running EU 1.08 on my 750 mh Pentium 3 with 32 MB nvidia card. I decided to move to my HP Pavillion (500 mh integrated video) and no crashes to desktop! Wow. What gives? EU is a great game. I was getting very frustrated until now. I've played the GC for about 20 hours so far.

Crashes on Save every time

Version 1.08 (North American) crashes me to desktop on Save every time. Additionally, the Save files generated are all empty (0 bytes). The crashes occur regardless of whether or not the CD is present in the drive.

System Information:
Athlon Thunderbird 1.0 GHz
MSI VIA KT133 Motherboard
SoundBlaster Live! X-Gamer 5.1
256MB of PC-133 SDRAM
nVidia GeForce2 GTS with 64MB RAM DDR
Pioneer 16X DVD Player
Windows ME 4.90.3000

Has anyone yet found a way of preventing the crashes on save?

Thanks

Bespoke

How much HD space do you have free on your HD?

I have a Pionex PIII 500, with 20G HD and Diamond Viper Vid. I originally had 64M Ram, and crashed on and off, then I loaded 1.08 and no problems. Read on the forum how EU ran so much better with more ram, so finally added another 128 yesterday. Had six crashes since then, but have not noticed any particular pattern. In the game one minute, at desktop the next.

1.08 crashes about the same amount as my boxed 1.07, in other words too often! However my crashes normally occur late in a major war (sometimes when I accept a peace offer from an AI country)or when loading a save game when in campaign play.

Further to this much earlier post: I regret to inform the persistent crashers that within a couple of weeks (or even sooner), the crashes declined dramatically. I've had about two crashes in the last month or so, and thats included a number of all day playing sessions.

I have no idea why this occurred, I was just relieved it did.

Crashes on save

I suffer the same problem as some previous submissions. Everytime I try to save (in 1.07 and 1.08) EU just crashes to desktop. When I first started playing the game though, I could save my campaign. The crashes just started suddenly one day, and ever since I have not been able to save any game.

My specs:
PIII 850
more than 128mb RAM
more than 4 gig free space
Gigabyte GA 622 Graphics adapter
Soundblaster Live

This is really annoying

Do you have a lot of saved games in your save directory? Try moving them to another directory and save again!

I got the same problem

I got the same problem and my hardware is:

8.4 quantum harddisc
350 Mhz AMD-K6 3D-NOW
128 Mb SD-RAM
Nvidia GE-Force 32 Mb, 350 Mhz GPU
Creative Soundblaster
ALi m5229 Mainboard
MS PS/2 Compatible mouse
Mitsumi CD-ROM FX3210S!B (32x)

And have tried version 1.09 but it didn't help.

Ps. It seems like the desktops crashes appears most frequent when I got a lot of rebelious to keep down... (playing as turkey fighting european rebels)

What more info do you need ???

I have tried moving them, or deleting them, it makes no difference. The game is now totally useless to me until this problem gets sorted out, which is a real pity.
