mousedown?

Mine seems to be crashing in GC more than tutorial - didn't play GC before 1.08 - but it might be the mousedown event.
I'm clicking on a province, there is a subtle but unmistakable pause, black screen and I'm back to Win 2k desktop.

You lucky dogs!

It crashed for me on 1.07 and still for 1.08. Down to saving yearly, but you have to try and save before Dec 30th each year, cause if it crashes during the autosave, (which it does!), than your game is corrupted!

Down to only Explorer and Systray only thing running. Don't know what to do. Is it a write to disk thing?

It's also equally frustrating when you just got yourself out a BIG hairy jam, getting that peace resolution you wanted and then WHAMMO! it crashes!

We understand that it is frustrating and we are very sorry for the problems but we don't have enough information to pinpoint the problems. We have 40+ PCs in the office and we are running various OS on them and we can't reproduce the frequent CTDs. Can you, please, leave us some more info about your hardware/software specs so we can investigate further.

reinstalled

I am running windows 2000 with sp 1
I have norton anti-virus running

I have uninstalled EU completely, reinstalled and then started the GC over again.
This seems to have cleared it up...I still get a pause, like it wants to crash - then it picks up and keeps going.

By the time I decided to reinstall, I would restart Win2k, load the game, restore spain_december_1497 get the opening screen in the game, get a helpful hint - then that "oh no" pause that tells me I'm about to suffer from the Hindenburg effect...

1.08 crashes to desktop on save

On 1.08 the game crashes to the desktop everytime I go to the save menu and try saving a game.
I have a 1 ghz Anthlon with 256m memory, Geoforce 2 with 32 mb and Windows ME. I would like to plan the game but I don't want to play without a save game function!!!!

Posted this originally in the FAQ forum -- it seems more appropriate here:

I've run into a strange problem with the game since I've installed the latest update. Last night while working through the Grand Campaign as Britain, I suddenly lost sound after about 1.5 hours of play. At that point, I saved my game in progress, figuring I would pick it up again today. However, the program fails to start up. It makes it through the intro film, and starts through the initializing protocol, only to freeze when loading sound drivers. After several warm boots, and a cold boot, the same problem remains. I'm about to reinstall the game, but I thought I would check in to see if anyone else has had this problem and if there is a solution.

BTW -- My machine is an HP Pavilion, PIII/500, with 128MB Ram, a 20G HD, Windows 98 (SP2), and a Creative Arts Sound Blaster board. I'm also running DirectX 8

Just a hunch here but try removing your CD when the game has started up. It may be the CD audio that is messing things up here.

Machine Hardware

Running Windows 98 SE on a
AMD T-Bird 1Ghz, ASUS A7V, 256Mb RAM, 48x Mitsumi EIDE CD-ROM, ATA 100 Maxtor 40Gb Drive, Sound Blaster Live!, Nvidia Geforce 2 MX video. Latest hardware drivers and running DirectX 8.

Sometimes it crashes with random mouse clicks, but each time I try and save, either by choice or yearly, I hold my breath and lay-off the mouse.

It's sporadic. Sometimes it crashes during a save, sometimes during play. Never consistent. I will try the remove CD option and disable the music. Hey, this gives me a reason to play a campaign as the Austrians!

Only 1 Crash, but it won't go away !!!!

I have reached year 1586 in the GC, version 1.08. At the 30th April the game crashes to the desktop each time. Prior to this the game ran perfectly. I tried it at low & high speeds, stopped all troop and ship movement, and done nothing but let the game run. After about 20 attempts I still have exactly the same problem.

I have a Pentium III 750, 256MB RAM, over 10GB's hard drive space and a 32MB display card, running on Windows 2000 SP1.

I have not tried reinstalling the game, could this help ???
As an aside I have not had 1 single crash while playing any other games on this machine.

so frustrating

Similar situation here... last game as England, after getting J.Cabot, I sent him towards N-A and the game would crash when he reaches Greenland. Loaded the dam savegame 4 times and it did it every time. But that may be a corrupted save game. My main concern is how bad the memory management is with this game.

When I exit the game - I have to reboot otherwise the syste will freeze. I cant do ALT-TAB becuz it will freeze. I cant reload from inside the game becuz it will crash... This is not mentioning the sloooooowwwwwess of it all when it loads

I have a PII -333/256RAM/15GIGHDD/VOODOO3000-16 Video Adpt

Not the latest hardware of course but plenty more that the minimum requirements. I'm seriously considering to put this game away despite my complete love for it.

crashes

I am getting the same crashes to desktop. Here are my
system specs:
Asus A7V
1000MHz Thunderbird
256 MB RAM
Geforce 2
SBLive
Windows 98SE

I have the all the latest bios' and drivers for all of my
hardware.

One other thing I've noticed is if I run Outlook before I
start EU, the game is choppy right from the start, even
though system resources are 90% free. Anyone else getting
this problem? I have to reboot to get the game to run
smoothly.

I had my first desktop crash yesterday... I was burning through some years to get some cash for a Fine Arts academy when it just crashed to desktop. I wasn't even touching the mouse! The funny thing, the music was still playing after the crash! I checked task manager and there were no EU programs running (even while the music was still playing).

Before loading my games, I quit all apps except explorer and systray for faster system performance, so after the crash it was especially obvious that no EU programs were still running. :(

If anyone cares:
WindowsME.
P3-733.
256 Megs of RAM.
ATI Rage Pro 32meg AGP card.
Iwill VD-133 board.

1.08 crashes

Definite crash conditions. I've seen two distinct types. One is the typical crash to the desktop and the other simply freezes the clock. I have one GC stuck in 1788. By the by, the game seems to be more crash prone with low disk space and/or memory fragmentation. If 1) one keeps enough space on the EU hard drive (at least 300 MB) and 2) resets the PC just before loading EU it appears to limit the crash probabilities.

Whew! I thought it was my PC for a while there until my buddy told me to check here. I'm having the same problems of game shutting down to the desktop.

It was happening randomly and whenever I tried to say the game. However, since I downloaded the "Europa Univeralis 1.08 BEN.exe" patch the randomly part has vanished. So now I'm only left with not being able to save any game. Once I click the "Save" button, Poof! :( Also I wanted to add that at one point I even got a VBScript error. Sorry I don't remember the specifics of it, I should of took a screen shot of it too. (Frustration does cloud the mind, hehehe)

Ok, on to the good stuff...

System specs:

Processor - Intel P3 700MHz 100bus
RAM - 384mb 133bus
Motherboard - MSI Mainboard supported by the Intel 815 Pro Chipset
Harddrive - Western Digital 100 Ultra DMA at 7200 RPM
Videocard - 3D Blaster Annihilator 2 by Creative: 32mb of DDR memory at 333MHz... can view detailed specifications at there web site www.creative.com
Soundcard - Sound Blaster Live 5.1 www.creative.com
CDROM - LITEON CD|52
Operating System - Windows 98 SE (No updates to it)
Monitor - B1770NSL on Creative GB0010 at 1024x768, High Color (16 bit)

Well, I hope that helps. :) Hope I didn't over-do-it. hehehe

Thanks

Well, guess what... hehehe I'm up and running with the ability to save games, however, that's as far as I got. I just spent 3 hours testing different theories and am going to goto bed here in a minute. But before I got I'll give ya'll the info I've found...

After seeing all the posts regarding this problem I got to thinking... I too had an External video card! hmmmmmmm, I thought. I notice a pattern. So I went along on my happy way and started testing things. I wont bore you all with the detail because I'm tired and am sure you all want me to get to the point. hehehe

What I did was booted down in to my BIOS and changed my video over to 'Internal' and booted up, install the standard drivers and.........Poof! I can save games!!!!

Tomorrow after I get home from work I'll play it and see how the rest of it goes but I'll bet it's going to work fine.

EU, you might want to look into the compatibility with the External video card on your game. I sent and email to your support email with my computer's detailed information. If you want to contact me via email for any further information, I'll be glad to help. Email can be found from my email or from my message board info. Thanks.

Hope this help y'all.

Sounds random to me

Currently, I am running Windows ME on a P3 800Mhz system with 384MB of RAM (45GB of disk space) GeForce GTS video card and SoundBlaster Live.

Playing a Grand Campaign, v1.08, the game started out fine. Played almost 100 years with no problems. Then about the time economics and wars started picking up, the game started to crash. One time there was no wars, but a lot of rebel troops in my home country (Turkey). Actually, it would have been Persia, as I annexed Persia early on. I modified the religous tolerance slider so rebellions would slow...In any event, the next crash happened after a major war with Russia (Venitia, Spain, France and some other minor countries) but did not crash until I was back expanding my colonies in the East.

There was no common thread to the crash.

i am playing as russia, and as i like to watch the years fly by, i usually put my speed up to 2 yrs/minute. this is when my crashes happen. problem is, if i slow it down, it will still happen. and always during wars(which can be both good and bad, i can better direct troops to my targets, but also, if i am a province away from annexing an enemy, then it kinda sux:(
thing is, it was not like this the first time i went through(i had posted about that in another topic "40 Years to go, now what?". in that game, i NEVER crashed. then i went and got the IGC, put that in, then took it back out. that was when i had the problems. maybe my bad luck?
