I installed 1.08 and I went to the game to start a new campaign but I noticed that instead of showing 1.08 it still showed 1.07. I think it added a few new countries in and maybe some other things but not everything the patch is suppose to do has happened yet. For example the read-me file says census taxes can only be taken from provinces with tax collectors. Well it still took census taxes from places without tax collectors. Should I reinstall the game or do something else?

Try a fresh install sounds like a good idea, then just install the 1.08 patch.

Why did you install 1.07?

That is a new one on me! never heard of that before, you should be able to patch 1.08 on any previous version including the prefered method of a fresh install from disk.

I can't install 1.08 either, after I hit the agreement and it starts downloading, I get to 8% and then a ReadOnly File Detected. How do I get around this?

Sounds like you are trying to download, expand and apply in one move. You can't really do this. When you download choose the "save" option not the "run" option, save it to a dir you remember, then when complete execute the patch from there.

If it still complains about RO files go ahead and OK the overwrite option.

Try this link.
http://www.paradoxplaza.com/files/patches/eu2_1.08.exe

I want you to right-click the link, then select "save target as" from the pop up menu.
then follow Andrews suggestion.

I tried again, and it still dosen't work. A dir is already picked, c:doucments and settings, after downloaded it goes to desktop, and the same problem occurs. I've never had a problem before, with any previous patches with EU2 or other products. All have worked this way, or by moving folders within others folders.

Are you saying it crashes after downloading and before you run the patch program to install it?

No, it dosen't crash, I noticed that if I send it to another folder other than c:documents and settings, I don't get the ReadOnly. But the patch dosen't go to the folder I choose, it goes to desktop. From desktop is where I get the RO. I enjoy 1.07 and will just have to stick with this. I wanted to try ACGEEP.

It does say that 1.08 has been installed on computer but 1.07 still shows up. I do appreciate you help in this matter. I'm sure it's just me.

Thanks again.

Create a new folder on the desk top call it EU patch
Then when you download the patch, change where it says it will save to, to say the new folder you just created. Then you should not have a problem.

I tried again, and send 1.08 to EU patch. Is this correct, c:documents and settings\default\desktop\eu patch? The patch did go to the desktop, but not in the folder.

I uninstalled & reinstalled EU2, and then downloaded the patch, as I was doing so I decided to start the game and it would not load due to an error, (unable to load function:ft_thunk(kernel 32.dll). But after I installed 1.07 it works.

Will I have a problem with future updates due to this error, or am I stuck with 1.07?

Ouch. That's a nasty problem.

There is indeed an FT_Thunk function in the kernel, but it's purpose isn't documented anywhere in the publicly available Microsoft documentation. It isn't declared in the API header files either, so a third party programmer has no direct access to it. In almost all cases like this, this means it's an internal Windows function, needed by the OS itself. However, it is listed near a couple of FT_Exit functions, and an FT_Prolog function.

The only reference Microsoft gives to thunking, is the mechanism of calling 16 bits legacy DLL code from within the 32 bits Windows memory model, which is in use as default since the introduction of Windows NT and Windows 95. Given the internal function names and the fact that they are part of the kernel, leads me to the assumption that these have somthing to do with this thunking mechanism.

Now for the tricky part. EU2 itself doesn't link to the thunking functions. Not does it use any DLL's that are still on old-style Windows 3.0/3.1 16 bits code. So, presumably something that EU2 needs probably is.

What are your system specs, more specifically your OS, DirectX, video and sound drivers?

yes that may be a good place to start.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread
