The Heroic German and Italian forces launched a brilliant offensive, which overran Tobruk, destroying many Allied aircraft, exposing the retreating allied forces to punishing air raids from General Kesselring's Luftwaffe. These raids virtually annihilated several retreating divisions, including the British Headquarters. The Allies succeeded in retreating to Alexandria, where German and Italian forces were unable to dislodge them.
In an attempt to flank the British, German paratroops landed in Syria, and syria joined the axis. Despite some further successes, Syria as overwhelmed by the British.
This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, however, as Alexandria was sufficiently weakened that Rommel and Messe were able to capture Alexandria on the 3rd or 4th offensive, after a successful ambush. Theer followed a brutal fight for the Nile delta, which eventually ended in an Axis victory after the allied supply dump was captured, along with vital oil supplies. Finally, the British troops in the theatre surrendered en masse, and the Axis captured the vital Suez canal.
