Well, he has an NVidia TNT board. While you can download the latest reference drivers, it won't make any difference. NVidia produces unified drivers (aka the same package for all video chips), which sort out internally which code path must be followed for the GPU chip on the video board.

And the code path for a TNT hasn't changed over the past couple of years (which isn't all that strange, as the TNT can't even handle hardware assisted transform and lightning).

I would strongly recommend adding some memory; at least borrow some as a test. 256MB of PC133 should cost $45-$90 depending on brand and where you get it. Have to watch out when buying for old PCs though; many won't take modules using high-density (256Mbit) chips or certain types of chips like 32x4 or 64x4.
