Sign ups

Signups will be decided in a weighted randomized process. If you want to sign up for the game, please scroll down to “Statistics and Starting Nations” and pick two nations that you are interested in. It does not matter if they are both great powers, you can chose whatever you like. If you are a maverick you can chose the same nation twice, although that will not achieve anything. After each player has made his picks, the “National Lottery” will take place on Wednesday, and will be more than likely pasted onto IRC live. The lottery will work as follows:

1) Each player who wants a certain nation will be rolled for thrice, on a scale of 1 to 10, and the average of his rolls will be taken.
2) The bonuses the player has (Will be explained shortly) will be added on to give his total score.
3) Whoever has the highest score for that nation wins. If a player does not get his primary nation, his score will be used in deciding his secondary nation.
4) Should any nations remain without players I will open up a second round of signups.

Bonuses will be small ways for me to interfere with the voting process. They will reward people who helped me with the game and also people who I already know and can relatively trust. The following bonuses are available:

Established player – If I already know you from some nation game, you will get a bonus of 1.
Helper – If you helped the game in a minor way you will be awarded a further bonus of 1.
Major help – This only applies to one person who will get a further bonus o 1. This person is Cheef, so it’s wise to see what nation he applies for as it may be hard to beat him there.

After the sign up process is over, I will ask each player to send orders in for next Wednesday, with the exception of the Spanish player who will be asked to send orders in as soon as possible.

ps. If you pester me about bonuses too much you will get to earn the super sweet Special Person bonus which is valued at -3 points. How exciting!
Turns, Orders and Mini-updates

It is important that the players of previous fast paced nation games know that this game follows the Mathrimian School and as such will be very slow. Each turn will take roughly two weeks real time, with ideally one or two mini during that time.

Each in game turn will last 6 months. This is to allow the tons of events that did happened in the period to actually happen. I hope this slowdown will also help me improve the quality of my writing. If you would like a sample of just how horrible it is, check out my (dead) AAR.

Every two turns (aka every year) the players will also send me a “research focus”. Don’t be fooled into thinking you can only focus on one thing; your focus can be as broad as possible, but please keep in mind that focusing on one thing will be more efficient. Focusing on tanks also does not mean all your other technology will simply stand still; it will progress like it did historically, but you will gain a bit of an edge in the technology you focused in.
Each normal turn a player will send the following orders:

- 2 normal orders.
- 1 construction order.

A construction order is to be used to construct divisions, planes and ships. Not roads, hospitals or whatever boring thing you want in your nation. Use your normal orders for that. It is recommended to not send boring orders or to feel that you must order both things. Interesting orders will receive bonuses, if you tell me to build roads three turns in a row I might just strangle you.

Orders for mini updates will usually be requested via IRC or Private Message if you are one of those funny people that doesn’t use IRC. Nations like Germany, Britain and France will be requested to give mini orders for not just wars but also stuff like the Munich Conference.

Statistics and Starting Nations
Statistics
Statistics will play differently in this game. The majority of the statistics are relating to military matters, and I am the first to acknowledge here that the economic statistics are mostly made up and don’t at all matter. The first thing you do after confirming a nation is to start a conversation with me using the new inbox system. This will help me greatly. This is a template on how to title your conversation:

[1936 Nation Game – Your Nation – Personalized string of emoticons (optional) ]

I know this is very hypocritical of me, but please do stick to it. Once you do that send me a message (Content optional) and I will reply with your full statistics. This will happen every turn. This is to make sure players cannot get 100% detailed information on every other nation.

Starting Nations
The starting nations will be divided up into three categories. First you have the Major Nations, which make up the 12 starting nations. Then you have four Reserve Nations. You can apply for either, but there is a possibility Reserve Nations are not included into the game. Once we get one or two turns underneath our belts, and I can feel like I can handle an additional 4 nations, the reserves will be put in.

Major nations
Germany - Dutchbag
The UK - Gorganslayer
France - Firelordsky
The United States - Keldonia
The Soviet Union - Harps
Italy - Cheef
Japan - Dadarian
Argentina - Free
Spain - Pretty sure it's someone but I forgot >_>
(Please note the Spanish player will be given an option to play either side in the civil war)

Hungary - XVG
Yugoslavia
Bulgaria - Noco

Reserve nations
Poland - Tyriet
Finland - Luftwafer
Brazil - None
Romania - Mathrim

Enemy Statistics

As mentioned previously, you will not be able to see enemy statistics. If you want to estimate the size of the enemies’ army or navy, please use a normal order to do it. You will receive the estimations on the enemies’ army size together with your own statistics at the end of each turn. The accuracy of the reports will vary. You can request estimates of more than one nation at once but accuracy will suffer.

Wars and Historical Development

Mini updates will be used for most wars and historical development before world war two starts. As you can see I have not made either Czechoslovakia or Poland playable nations at the start in order to ensure that they don’t bugger anything up in the starting turns and that we do get some wars going.

Players of great powers are highly encouraged to follow either a historical route with minor changes or at least one that is interesting. If a player choses to play “peaceful” Germany, I will be very angry and will probably remove him from the position.

Civilian Orders and the Economy

The economy is a part of this game, but it is very minor. With the war relatively close by, do not expect to turn Yugoslavia into an economic powerhouse. The economy is there purely as an indicator for other players.

If sending civilian orders please make them creative. If you are playing for example Argentina and don’t have too much to do, at least be creative. Try to influence the world in some way or another from your corner of the world.

Please make your economic orders creative and not just designed to get you better statistics. You will be rewarded more for trying to play creatively than for trying to use all of your orders to better your statistics every single turn. If you send boring orders, expect your update section to be short.

“In Character” Posts

You are free to post “IC” about whatever you want. You are also free to not post it at all. Posting IC will not give you any bonuses. There are however a few rules regarding IC that I would like you to follow:

1) Don’t make stuff up. Don’t just say your nation has developed this new awesome tank without consulting me first.
2) Don’t state that something happened in another nation unless it’s in an update.
3) No one cares about your roads.

Acknowledgements

Thanks to Cheef for making all of the very detailed naval stats.
The land stats were largely borrowed from Darkest Hour and such they might be a bit on the wildly inaccurate side.

The Map

Currently in the process of adding more cities. Should be done by next Friday. Please also note that due to the large size of the map, the full map (cities and everything) will only be posted divided into three in different sections of the update. Mini-updates will only have their relevant map sections posted with them.

Here's a basic one in case you need it though:

IRC and IRC rules
The IRC channel will be #nationgame. Rules:
1) Don’t post not safe for work links without branding them as such.
2) Don’t pester people.
3) Don’t spam.

It is generally recommended to be in irc.
