1940: Year of the Sloth?

I don't know why the game as 1940 rolls around, slows down. It also takes a very long time to save and locks up if I try to load a saved game. I have read several posts with similar problems here but the solutions recommended have been to no avail. My specs are as follows:

Pentium III 1GHz
512MB RAM
Windows XP Professional
32 MB NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti4200
40GB Hard drive space (19GB free)
Direct X 8.1
16x DVD/CD ROM drive

I'm at a loss for any other important specs. I have disabled Bink Player and increased my virtual memory. Also downloaded latest updates for Windows XP and my graphics card.

Help is much appreciated.

save-game bug

This seems to be system-specific in some way. I for one have never seen it. Running 1.03b/W98/P3.933/Nvidia 2

The dark hand of Redmond strikes again perhaps? Roll on the linux port...

All my save games are 1-2 MB, rain or shine.
