I just installed the 2.2 patch and now I can't get a saved game to load. The game crashes back to desktop when I click on a saved game. Is there a fix?

You cannot play a pre-2.2 save game under 2.2, you are supposed to finish any existing games before applying any patch.
I have the same problem after installing Rome gold and its patch on my older Rome. Is there any fix for that in the future or is it totally impossible to fix?
"The same problem" being that a save game from pre-2.2 won't work under 2.2? If so, no, there is no possible fix I'm afraid - as I said above, you are supposed to finish any existing games before applying any patch.
You could move the valued save elsewhere, uninstall the game, install it again and only apply the patch the save game was created under, then play to the finish.
