I'd say it's WAD, since the country cousins you get are in the dynasty of your ruler=realm. But I'm not certain about those "of Novgorod" people you mentioned, I don't remember seeing people like that made in random.

I noticed that in Novgorod for instance that at the beginning of the game their names ar XXXX of Novgorod but any new "Orphins" are assigned the Last name of the monarch. Is this WAD, if it is it's inconsitant
I don't understand were the inconsistency is...

Could you re-explain it to me, please ?

Thanks,

I think the people with name "of xxxxx" are people who have no dynasty at game start. They belong to one county and use that as a last name. After the game starts everyone gets married, has kids and the kids get the dynasty names.

I think the problem is that there aren't surnames other than the monarch's last name(if they have a unique one themselves) in these areas and so it defaults to the name "of Province". I've noticed in my own small project(the dynasty.txt mix and match mod) that when you add new dynasties to an area, but you don't attach them to a specific area, generally people with that last name pop up in those provinces instead of the "of ****", so a potential solution to the problem that some of us have with the lack of variety in these areas is to do some research ourselves and add some dynastic names for the non-ruling parties in these regions.

Or we could do something like the Paradox crew did for EU2 when it came to non-historical commanders and use a list of surnames that would be used to just sort of fill in the gaps.

How can they be added but not attached to an area

Anyways this seems to be a matter of not having random dynasty names in all areas, right? So what should be done is make some. That's a modding project that should be handled in that subforum. I'm certain Paradox would happily incorporate such a mod to official pathces.

What I meant when I said that was the "of XXXX" things.

And I think the small project I started in Scen+Mods could be useful for this end goal if we change the intent of it to make the whole gaming experience a little richer for all areas of the game, and not just the addition of direct family connections that were existent during this time.

I think I am agreeing with GH...

So far as I can tell, there is no mechanism in the game for creating new dynasty names. The "of XXXX" form is in dynasty.txt in the db folder for many dynasties. I have not seen any instance of a dynasty name *created on the fly* - and I have done a lot of research in the area.

Further on GH's point. Every dynasty has defined provinces where it *exists*. I believe these are used when a random character is created. If a given province (which is an active court) does not fit any dynasty, then I guess that the random character will be given the name (dynasty) of the liege.

define "on the fly" in the context you mean it in this instance please, so I don't misunderstand what you are saying and so I can agree and/or disagree with the what you are actually saying and not my interpretation of said words.

That no dynasty name is created outside of those defined in dynasty.txt.

That is, that all dynasty id's are pre-defined. Each dynasty id has a name associated with it. Note, that there may be a small number of duplicate names...

ok, well, we are on exactly the same page then. I was not implying that a) the game was generating those names without that corresponding info and b) what my point was, and GH mentioned it as well was having a group of dynastic names that would be used in conjunction with the "of XXXX" names, and thus this isn't a bug so much as a something for modding, either on an official or unofficial capacity.
