Looking for help please! My savegame crashes on a certain date no matter what I do. Why might that be?

Things I have done to try to prevent this:

* disable all dice-rolls I know are going to be made on that date, like the Sway scheme I had running, and cancelling other changes like buildings I'm building

* manually trigger big world-affecting events like the Mongol Invasion to see if it was the Random Mongol Trigger or similar that was faulty (seemed plausible with the recent changes to the Mongols)

* go into Observer Mode to see if the AI's different processes for my ruler might skip the problem

* go back to older saves to make sure I'm coming at the problem from before any random dice-rolls which manifest on 3rd September 1188

* disabled all mods, obviously - though I was always conservative with mods, using only well-supported or very very light-touch mods (like the one for dismissing all your messages by pressing F)

I have been running this save since 867, publishing 400-1600 words per day with annotated screenshots once per day for my friends. It's a hobby. It's a discipline exercise. It's a storytelling game, and I've been telling a story that's breached 300,000 words in its scope.

I knew this day would come - the game nearly broke with RtP, and I had to turn the Byzantine Empire off and on again - but the longer I can stave it off, the better!

I cry out to all the modders, all the turbo-nerds like me, all the minmaxers who know the system inside out, all the hardcore roleplayers picking The Worst Option, and yes, I cry out to PDX-Trinexx and all who sail in her, I need ideas for what to try next!

What do you mean by 'turn the Byzantine Empire off and on again?' What did you do?

Continuing a savegame through version changes is not and has never been supported. You should have reverted the game version to the one you started with and not updated it until you were done.

The ERE didn't just spontaneously go Admin when RtP launched, as I'd thought it might.

Then the Empress didn't choose to use the Become Admin decision, as I'd thought she might.

I could see other features of RtP were enabled - the Murex buildings existed and had the new icon referring to Influence, for example.

But then the Empire accidentally underwent spontaneous Frankokratia when a Karling relative inherited the throne, and suddenly all but two of the new French Basilissa's vassals wanted Independence or Dissolution. I prompted the war, the rebels won it, and a few years later, the title disappeared because the "Empress" held like 3% of her de jure lands. Suddenly the new Conquer Former Imperial Duchy CB appeared and everyone set to, the various successor states of Big Bulgaria, Pontus, Anatolikon, Thessalonika, Epirus and Hellas.

It was like the Inner Sphere for a while. But one horrifyingly bloody series of civil wars later, the ruling dynasty of Philippopolis and Bulgaria pronounced themselves Basilissas et voilà, the Byzzies are now Admin.

Objectively I know this, but I wanted the cool new features! Alas, I appear to have enjoyed FA long enough to get to FO.

Friend I am sad for you but I think your epic story may have to end with Rocks Fall Everyone Dies.

I'm actually not sure how you've managed to make it this far through version changes without an apocalypse of one kind or another. Every time I forget and open a save after an update I'm immediately greeted with a map full of DNA-altered weirdos.

I figured God willed it, maybe.

It does seem a shame to get locked into a previous version like this in a game format which seems to both encourage and absolutely languish in taking your time to play it. I don't get the "Speed 5 or nothing" people. I want to live with these characters. IDK.

I have the next phase of the story ready - dummied out from when the save surprisingly kept working after 1017 (the year it was when RtP was launched!). It starts something like:

"Nobody's going to believe any of this, you know. And I think it might be some sort of crime. I don't think Allah wants you writing down fake histories."
"It's a story, Mariam. A morality tale. See how all the rulers have had their different faults? And we learn from each in their turn?"
"Yes, but... it's not true. Why don't you write about real rulers like Malek-al-Inkitar and Salah-el-Din?"
"Well, maybe I will from now on."

I've always wanted to try out the Landless Adventurer game, after all... ;)

lol trust me I get it. I spent a year on an old version because I wouldn't give up my preciouses, cursing every unfixed bug as I did

Well, let's be precise: has only now properly crashed! A year on! I don't think that's bad at all!
There is a old issue, seemingly never fixed, that had nothing to do with version changes that just crashed your game on a specific date for no discernible reason.

Usually, you could get around it by loading an older save, a mere auto-save three month reversal hardly ever worked, you need to go a year-ish back, if you can.
