Since the game is fairly easy as is, let's for the sake of arguments look at plausible challenges. Ideally things that sound as if they are doable within the constraints of the game but are too much effort to actually try.

Let me start out with an example inspired by the various threads from people, who have problems husbanding their resources in the minimal strategic overlay to the game.

Challenge #1: Experienced Retainers!

Imagine a world in which reinforcement was free. It can be yours. To complete this challenge you must:

  • Choose spearmen as your bonus units for the first battle.
  • After the first battle, disband all non-spearmen.
  • From now on you are only allowed to recruit and use spearmen, either blackthorns or vindicators. If you receive other units by event, they must be disbanded as soon as possible.
  • Every spearman unit must take the Experienced Retainers ability as their first bonus ability.
  • Do this on the challenging difficulty level.

An added challenge factor would be to not use vindicators but stick with the blackthorns and, for the masochists, to do it on impossible.

-------------

Now, how would one deal with such a challenge were one sick enough to attempt it. (I am not. I hope.)

Every battle you'll field 3 heroes and 15 spearmen units. You'll be the terror of cavalry and monsters, but to deal with infantry, archers, flyers, and enemy heroes you'll need to rely on your own heroes - or on your superior ability to tolerate casualties, when all your reinforcements are free after battle so long as one man survives in each unit. You'll get really, really, good at using javelins.

The question arises of which morality one should choose and which starting hero. While a teleporting champion or a healing circle warlord would be nice, their lack of anti-air capabilities makes them distinctly inferior to the sage, who has venomous curse to deal with fliers once the enemy's magic shield has been beaten down.

As regards morality, since no morality creatures are used, the decision hinges on the abilities. With the fragile spearmen expected to make massive casualties in many battles and our natural desires not to lose any units entirely, Righteous for Resurrection seems the obvious choice. That leaves the question of old faith vs christian. On the side of christianity we've got Healing and Seraph's Blessing, old faith we've got Fomori Slayer and Magical Attack. One side significantly aids survivability, the other side levels the field by making the enemy as fragile as the spearmen themselves by stripping them of defenses - and then adds another 50% damage on top vs. Fomorians. I'm not sure which is best here, really. Again, we must remember that these skills are only available at level 10 and 15, since the level 5 pick must be Experienced Retainers in this challenge.

So, that was my slightly sick "what-if?" challenge. Anybody got other interesting challenges in mind?
