Perhaps it would solve a few arguments to make a general list of gamey. This way you could refer to the list when starting games. ie as of one the rules - gamey list applies, or something. We could list out all the things that people more or less agree on.

Using Pirates to prevent unloading
dowing an ai ally while you have truce with player

er... more to follow

Please check this thread for many gamey tricks. A definitive list is in my opinion not good enough, because anything not on the list is then acceptable :(

The problem with gamey is that some things are pretty hard to define and can depend on circumstances. Simply put it's often best to just allow the GM to define what is gamey and punish/order it stopped at the time it happens, so I agree with Jarkko.

Still, in the interests of compiling some sort of list here are a few things off the top of my head that I dislike to see. Some are clear cut and others unfortunately vague - hence point above.
  • Using lag to gain an advantage - e.g. lag colonists
  • Going CRC, dowing, and then returning to Catholicism soon after the war.
  • Refusing to leave an alliance when ordered by alliance leader. Without CB he cannot kick you. Can be badly abused sometimes, thankfully very rarely.
  • I'll add mapsharing with the AI. It's too easy for everyone to get access to the far eastern cots with it which equals gamey to me. I understand some disagree.
  • Perhaps vague but things like winning a colonial war (ie most of your war score is from the colonies) and then demanding stuff in Europe - only abuse I agree when you are unable to hold the european posessions for more than a short period of time but easily abused in the late game with the back and forth move/assault/retreat of a flowing war.
  • Getting overrun and then releasing conquered territory as vassals before they can be demanded in peace.
  • Overruning someone and then refusing to make peace simply so you can damage their economy.

In my opinion an extensive list with gamey stuff is desirable.

I don't feel like discussing this topic in more detail anymore, after this rigorous cleansing operation that removed two pages of posts, including many on-topic posts.

Feel free to start the discussion up again; just don't let it drift into chess rules and what is and isn't allowed in bridge.
