I haven't played this game for a long time, I was put off by the game breaking bugs etc. I don't like using that word but it's the truth in this case.

But I just want to say, in my honest opinion the game is thoroughly enjoyable now, and there is nothing i've yet come across I would quibble about!
I advise anyone who was put off by the early road bumps to give it another go, and see if im not correct!

Is AI any better? The worst part of the game for me was that the AI sent a lot small fleets agaist you. Too weak to do any damage, but you still had to fight them. One by one. Every round, exactly the same battle... so boring...

The AI has been literally transformed over the past 6 months. last year, even though most of the game breaking bugs were sorted out, you were really playing the complicated logistics of the game more than the AI factions who, once you could bring your guns to bear on them, would typically fold in short order mainly due to chronic economic mismanagement by the AI.

This is no longer the case and the game will give you a run for your money, if not a sound trashing, on hard difficulty. It is also a blast to play.

MUCH Better!!!!

In what way? It still feel "incompleteness". I will grant the AI/game breaking have gotten better.

See the above posts. The AI is challenging now. Real run for your money. This is now one of the top 10 ever paradox games imho. If you own try it again.
Challenging on Normal, or challenging on Hard?

Because challenging on hard may make a reasonably fun game but it means the thing can only keep up when given a massive handicap.

Challenging on neither. It's learned a couple tricks, but isn't really good at implementing them. The difference between normal and hard is that on hard, it will throw MORE atrociously designed fleets at you.

I lose a couple ships defending against the AI in the first 30 turns. Then I don't lose anything for the remainder of the game, as it sends wave after wave of fleets composed of ships designed with remarkable incompetence and without showing any sign of adapting to my designs without ever even aiming for a particularly poorly defended system.

True if you know how to tune your economy up you can usually afford to out-research the opposition in which case they will find it hard to kill your ships. However you can still find yourself attacked early by aggressive factions such as Hivers who have really tough ships or Zuul Horde who have early Dreads and find they have the upper hand leading to squeaky bum time.

Even with the AI set to hard I've seen the AI self-destruct too often.

The AI builds so many crappy ships that it's entire budget is consumed with fleet and station maintenance.

Try harder ;)

Maybe he bought the game, made an account for the game, saw that it was bad, and never posted again? That probably fits like 3/4 of the people who bought this game.

MUCH Better!!!!
Bullshit.

It is slightly better in that it's less buggy but it's just as dumb in every other way.

The AI builds so many crappy ships that it's entire budget is consumed with fleet and station maintenance.
Yup.

I wouldn't say the AI is the worst part of the game. At the very least with a bad AI you can play MP and have fun.
