Not really. In SP I can almost always get away with a total army size in the 200-250k range when I'm up to my cruising along superpower stage. The big difference between MY 200k and the AI's os that I usually have an MP of 600k without trying, and 1M+ if I really push it (though with 5.2 that seems to have dropped a bit. 600K is still doable with HRE status and basic effort, though) so I'm able to win wars of attrition when necessary (or queue up an extra 100k MP in troops on the spot).

Also, consider that the AI for nations like Norway have a tendency to be at war very often, even when its not entirely reasonable to be, and that 180k might not represent what the AI is actually trying to field, just what it had at the end of the game.

What Frankfurt didn't have in men they made up for in tech. They had alot more land tech than the other world powers, and were one of the biggest yellow nations on the tech map. Some other powers were 10 techs behind.

Sorry for double post, but I just saw that Byzantium has only one ship, a transport. In 1645, they had the largest fleet in the world! 106 ships, in total. How the mighty have fallen.

The AI has a habit of mismanaging the economy, going bankrupt, and then disbanding the entire navy. In fact, I'd go further and say that the AI just sucks at all things naval. All AI nations should get a boost to forcelimits, a discount on naval maintenance, and be coded not to disband the *entire* fleet when bankrupt.

Once we have the last global update post we should have a contest to see who can pick our GPs. If everyone ranks them and picks them I doubt we 'll have any ties.

Would love to see some historical analysis. Who are the famous figures of history? Who's got the reputation of badass warrior king? Who is the new Luther? Who is the new Jean Chauvin (John Calvin)? Who are the great builders? Who are the fathers of the great powers (Famous generals/Kings)? Who are the historical analogs to each of these countries (like Byzantines to Ottomans: Large inflation problems, overextended, severely outmatched by rivals to the west, nationalism will probably be a problem, etc.)?

I really love this AAR. Its one of my favorite AARs ever.

I highly doubt Byzantium will have nationalism problems when half their realm is Greek and there several other Greek states and Greek-cultured provinces nearby. Maybe in Persia, but not to the extent of the Ottomans.

THE BEGINNING OF THE LONG PEACE, 1821

The year 1821 saw the beginning of perhaps the most extraordinary period in human history. Wars worldwide ceased as military forces simply refused to engage one another in combat. The reason for unprecedented outbreak of global peace remains unclear. The scholars of the day, such as the statesman Jeremy Essex, are mysteriously mute on the subject. Today, politicians often use their views of its cause to promote their own political and social agendas, arguing that their way is the way to return to peace…or alternatively to avoid it, for those who see the Long Peace as a time of weakness. Some see a secret conspiracy behind it all, a sort of shadow government for who benefited from the unusual time. But whatever the cause, the fact remains that for the first time in history, an entire generation of young men would grow up without shedding blood in battle.

Even now, intellectuals continue to put forth new theories. The cultural critic J.G. Ballard saw parallels between the Long Peace and the more recent period known as the Recess, which he famously described as “that world slump of boredom, lethargy and highs summer which carried us all so blissfully through ten unforgettable years.” Perhaps, he argued, people had simply grown bored and tired of war and needed an extended vacation.

An alternative notion was proposed by the New Age spiritualist, Brian Aldiss. He proposed that a planet inhabited by beings far more advanced than us had been observing Earth through a satellite observatory, and chose to beam empathic energy toward Gaea, the spirit of the planet. When asked why the period ended, he suggested that it was a final gift to us. Knowing that our observational technology would soon be sufficient to detect the satellite and its transmissions, they were preparing to end their observations.

The radical historian Philip K Dick theorized that “real time”, as he termed it, ended in 1066. All subsequent events that appeared to happen were part of a two-source hologram generated by a vast artificial intelligence, determined to prevent the fall of the Roman Empire. He notes that in 1820, the Byzantines were once again at war with Austria and Navarra, and the Long Peace likely prevented serious damage to the Empire. As he repeatedly reminded his readers in his monumental work, VALIS, ‘ the Empire never ended.’ But none of these explanations has received wide acceptance, and Dick’s ideas in particular have often been dismissed as the ravings of a deranged anti-Hellenist.

And with this post, I conclude the EU3 part of this journey. Thank you for coming with me on this exploration. I still hope to continue the game in V2, but am dependent on the converter being compatible with HOD.

Is this a hint that you'll be skipping HOI3? Not that that's a problem, of course, given that it really is too scripted.

Also, do you have plans to eventually do a CK2:ToG -> EU4 -> Vic2 -> EvW campaign? 1124 years of Paradox chaos!

No, it's just a quote from "Prima Belladonna". The Recess would presumably follow the Cold War, though I don't think Ballard ever put any dates on it. Nobody's very worried about time in the Vermillion Sands stories. If there's a workable converter by the time the V2 part is over, I'll give it a whirl, but I don't really expect it.

As to the long campaign...we'll see. Not in the immediate future, I don't think.

Is Funj still a Byzantine vassal?
Also, do nations in EU3 have titles beyond kingdom or empire? Like, what kind of titles do Berry, Frankfurt, Sibir ect. have? Maybe you could even give us a last rundown of the official names of all the leading nations?

Of course Ballard and Dick would have those theories. I like that the events of this game changed Dick's theory to being that time stopped in 1066. Would he still think himself a Gnostic, then, is the real question, or would he consider himself a part of the obscure sect of Abrahamics called "Muslims"?

Wonderful stuff, really enjoyed this part as well.

I'm good with Dick's explanation :)

@Rafinius, yes, Funj is still a vassal and therefore technically a "duchy" in EU3 terms. There really aren't titles for countries, just government types. Any vassal state is a duchy, any independent monarchy is a kingdom (with a few special exception like hordes and the Byzantine Empire).

@Merrick Chance, I don't think Dick would be a garden variety muslim since there are still two major muslim countries. Maybe Sufi or Yazidi. Or a Bogomil--that would be a good ideological fit.
