Yes I have been behind some of the others by three or four levels, but haven't really lost a battle because of it (yet).

One thing which is really tiring me about the game is the constant civil wars. It is impossible to actually do anything because there is always a succession problem or your ruler is unpopular... it's infuriating. Am I just getting a awful/unpopular line of rulers or is this the norm? And any way to stop these crises?

the thing i can think of is getting them a bunch of titles and sending the ones that are not loyal on risky missions (declare war on someone and/or assasinate some of them)

For generals lets say one of your generals gets 5 loyal troops but the rest is not loyal take away the rest that is not loyal and set a new commander for them troops that is not loyal.
and hold a triumph over the general
but yes after a while it can get frustrating.

fascinating update. Actually I found much the same. All the advice is to play Macedonia as its an easy starting country and so on ... & I could never get out of a civil war cycle either.

For the sake of those reading (and thanks for reading!) this AAR is officially dead... the hundred years covered in this AAR was exciting and tremendous fun to write, probably some of the most fun I've had in many years of doing this... but the endless cycles of civil wars ingame are just killers. They are yearly, extremely common and unavoidable and have killed all my enthusiasm for this game.

I have kept writing though but moved on to the new Darkest Hour - check out the new Roman Empire over here - Memento Mori :)!
