HOI III is not working properly on Windows 10.
Some can. Others no. And whatever you may do, reading and applying all threads and others, some don't succeed in launching the app, even with a new PC, a clean version of Windows 10 with Direct X 10 june, all Visual C++ 2005 to 2019, podcast installed and using all kind of cleaning or repairing tools

HOI IV is another game.

Lot of studios upgrade their softwares to be usable on W10.
That's the minimum of respect for old customers and a real market with new customers.

So, please, Paradox Interactive, would you consider building a remastered version of HOI III as did Creative Assembly for some of their games?
That's not worse idea than releasing junked DLC on newer game like EU IV, isn't it?

Could not agree more. HoI IV is a joke of a "strategy" game. Get some nerds together to crunch HoI III code until it works.

I bought HOI 3 including all DLCs from GOG. It runs for me (Win 10) absolutely without problems. No crashes at all. I didn't have to adjust anything either.

Even the mods all work:
Ahoy Mod 4.05
Unit Mod 8.2
Unternehmen Walkuere 1.0
World War 1 Mod

-Only with a 4K (3840x2160) screen resolution are the ingame menus very small. But very good playable up to HD 1980x1020
-The game gets a bit slow over time, especially with the Ahoy mod. (Event Winter/mud period Soviet Union)
-The download version is (4.02). Other known bugs are not fixed. I would like an update on that too. But then the mods will probably no longer work.

I would love to see it, but the powers that be at Paradox have spoken repeatedly: they will not permit their engine to be licensed (which is basically what happened for Darkest Hour) to the community in order to give the game the "Darkest Hour" treatment (or even to debug all of the rest of the game).

Heist maybe?

Yes please, i spent entire yesterday trying to get game to work. I read so many threads here and elsewhere, tried so many things, but it just refuses to work. It worked decently on my older hardware even though it too had Windows 10, but on this set of much more modern hardware, it just keeps crashing.

Maybe i will make my own thread later but for now i am fu**ing done for now, i need a break from this.

Its just not fun to play a game when for last, what, 7 years or however long it has had issues, every time i want to play it, it requires some tricks to be done before i can play it, and now it seems none of those tricks work anymore.

I don't need remaster that makes it best game ever, but i do want game that works.

Your post is nothing to do with the topic of this thread, which I'm now moving as it is not a tech support issue anyway.

When you are ready please make a new thread in Tech Support with full problem details and history, thanks.

I would to also see this game developed further.
I generally feel this game is so much better than 4 it’s not even close.
Just a shame it was never completely ironed out.
But hey ho it’s just my opinion!

You seem to know your way around computers so I won’t give you that speech.

If you need help, just let me know.

I also have a steam version of the game that works perfectly fine with and without mods so somehow, it’s still possible !…

I had some issues reinstalling on Windows 10. The installation on the new system from the original CD didn't work, since Windows 10 doesn't support the on-disc copy protection used on it. I re-purchased it as a GOG download and it still wouldn't work, despite installing the older C++ runtime components as needed. After trying a long list of "fixes" that didn't fix anything, I eventually used a utility to clear out the leftover pieces of the failed CD install from the Registry (not something that the average computer user would want to or should tackle), and after that it installed and ran fine. No problems or crashes in hundreds of hours of playing time.

Note, I don't recommend editing your Registry unless you REALLY know what you're doing.

Nice job, I fear this, have planned to buy a new computer for a few years now but has hesitated.
Anyone here had problem with steam version on an new computer?

Agreed.
A clean OS reinstallation can have the same effect in a much safer way.

It’s an old game and it should be treated as such. No way you can run this at once on a new computer. You’ll have to tweak things around according to your specs.

Generally speaking, from steam version, copying base game folder, running Dsafe patcher, updating .net framework and visual c++ plugins manually as well as dx9c should do the trick.

That’s what I did and it works relatively fine. It still crashes from time to time for no obvious reason( I’d say once in a dozen hours) and it strangely doesn’t like to load multiple saves on the same session.
These problems apart, it’s just fine…

At this point, keeping my old computers around to play the game and keeping them airgapped from the Internet seems to be the best way to get around the issues!

I can't comment on the Steam version, but once I removed the leftover debris from the failed installation, the GOG version installed easily and has run just about flawlessly (as flawlessly as this inherently flawed gem can run), except for one lock-up in probably 500+ hours of playing time. I suspect that if I hadn't tried installing from the CD, it would have installed fine the first time.

As 4nyw4re points out, a clean OS install is probably your best bet, so if you're building a new system, the game should install, as long as you download the older C++ redistributable components and graphics files as spelled out in the support sub-forum.

Well, it seems that I'll get to re-live that installation experience. My house was broken into late in the week, and my computer system was stolen. The thief ransacked the entire house, pulling out drawers and dumping them, probably looking for cash or guns, and tossed stuff out of his way, leaving a broken mess scattered around the entire house. The one neighbor has surveillance cameras, and there's clear images of him walking up to the back yards, crawling through a window to rob the house next to mine, then coming back and forcing a door open to rob mine. It's bad enough what he stole, but it's going to take me days or weeks of work and hundreds of dollars to clean up, repair, and replace even the more important items that he senselessly destroyed.

So, I'm posting from the computer at work. It will be a while before I can replace the system, and a lot longer until I reload most of the old software.
