For starters....

This is my First AAR....so please be kind.....
I will include lots of pictures to keep people interested
My basis for this AAR is my love for exploring "What ifs" through out history.....
The Question I ask here is "What If Alfred Landon won the 1936 Presidential election?"

Chapter One: Good Fences make Good Neighbors
***********************

The American Public had not responded well to President Roosevelt's news set of schemes. In January of 1936 Roosevelt announced that the United States Navy would begin a process of modernization.....The first step in this proccess was to begin either by scraping old ships or transfering them to The United States Coast Guard. Roosevelt had not anticipated the public reaction to this measure.... He stopped production on all naval ships currently being built....stating that they were already obsolete. However, with America still being gripped by the great deprestion all this did was eleminate much needed jobs.

Public Opinon of Roosevelt dropped significantly over the next few months, Rosevelt did little to improve his public imaige....instead choosing to rest on his laurels and simply assume that he would win the election, this strategy was the breaking point.....The American people voted him out of office, choosing instead to support Landon, who had used Roosevelts policy of Naval improvment as a basis for future warmongering on the part of the ex-president.

Landon introduced new policy across the board.....He insisted that America's involvent in the first world war had led to the great depression. This allowed him to start cutting trades with europe in favor of countrys "closer to home" Landon also changed the face of the military stating that "The best defense......is a GOOD defense....."

The new president also stated that a focus on econmic reforms, upgrades and expantion would create new jobs for the american people. The last measure that Landon implemented soon after taking office was the policy of "Fencing" In a clear message to the entire world, America began building a serries of costal and land based fortification to prevent any incursion into american territory.

Indeed with a new economic policy America's future looked very bright indeed.....but what of the rest of the world?

The allied powers of Europe had been looking to america for possible support ina war with Germany or Russia....However, that door had now closed the future was not nearly as bright for Europe...

Chapter 2 Those Salty Dogs
**************

1937 was a series of challenges and compromises for the Landon Administration. His first order of buisness was to reestablish the near bankrupt ship building industry. Landon hoped to build a "small but capable fleet" to protect American home waters and interests abroad. His first priority was to finish the great battle ships his predocessor roosevelt had begun constructing during the sun set days of his old administration. The 4 giant ships gleamed in the sun during a warm day in september 1937.. Landon himself was there with his wife to see the ships launch....With much fanfare Landon promised to "re-energize" the American industrial base. (His real reasoning for creating more warships was to appease the mobs that had decended on DC in a "Great war rally" just a few weeks before the ships were due to be launched.) With in the week, Landon's policy was set into motion with construction begining on 4 aircraft carriers and 4 heavy cruisers.

Landon had also made good on his progress to "make a fence" Construction was steadly working down the coast. As it stood in October of 1936 a sea wall stretched from Portland Maine to Norfolk Virginia.

The biggest challenge of the year had been when his Economic policy came under attack from ultra conserviatives... Landon refused to back down....stating that he would not give into empty threats.....

Overseas, Republican spain had been crushed by revolting nationalists in less then a year. Americans took little notice.....

Chapter 3: Presidential Blues
********

On June 9th 1938 4 Heavy cruisers Launched. This further solidified America's faith in Landons promise about the Navy... How ever there was trouble brewing else where. On July 3rd one of the largest labor strikes ever hit the United States. Other then the naval yard companies other manufacturing and industrial centers were still feeling the weight of the depression. Landon's campaign promise of "More Factories for the working man" never really materialised after only a token effort. The country was still dealing with the effects of the strike in November when Landon's new law policies came under attack from all ends of the public... This forced Landon to revise the policy....but many questioned if he would really "stick to hsi guns" when it came to tough negotiations...

The Rest of 1938 continued with more shipbuilding and research done by the government. The Landon administration was having a hard time dealing with bad public opinon. This had affected production dates and effecincy all across the contry....Things seemed to be becomeing rather difficult for the president.

Chapter 4: The Brink Of War
*******
Just as Landon's decisionts and plans were becoming unpopular his original prodictions turned out to be true. Italy Declared war on Albania in March of 1939...The fight did not last long, but it was a forshadowing of things to come...Poland Joined the Allies at the beggining of April. It was now clear that almost any conflict would once again ignight a war "over there"

In response to Growing tentions in Europe Landon ordered reserve Units along the coast to go to temporary duty at costal forts....esentially a show of force....exactly who he was showing it too remained a mystery....The people of Europe had all their attention on a other things...

May brought about the biggest Naval deployment yet.....Four Brand new Carriers left the dockyards on May 12. The US Navy was now a force to be reconed with....should the need ever arise.

The rest of the summer months included the creation of the First Permanent US Army Corp...three divisons under the command of Lt. General Macarthur.

Chapter 5: A new Kind Of War
******
The end of August made war seem almost immenent in Europe the allies geared up for war with Germany. On August 30th 1939 Germany Declared war on Poland...WWII Had officaly started. America was strictly nutral in the conflict...trading with neither the allies or the Axis powers.

By september Poland was finished....Just a drop in the bucket for the German War Machine. October proved to be a very difficult month for Landon's seemingly lackluster Administration. The Public learned that The US Government had been secretly trading war materials for rare manufacturing goods with the Soviet Union. To make matters worse, The soviet union declared war on finland during the congresstional investigation... Finnish soldiers were being killed by American equipment used by russian soldiers....The American public stoped short of demanding Landon's resignation....but it was a blow he would never recover from despite a good effort.

Chapter 6: Further Blunders
*******

Just in time to kick off the new year was another attack on Landon's policy, this time however he refused to back down. Hoping to appease the public's distrust Landon wanted to be seen as a stable figure in the US Government, However the attempt backfired....and Landon is once again left holding the short end of the stick. Germany Continues to grab european terrirtory like free candy, Landon accepts parts of the former Danish nation....This only sends a confusing message to the American public who were under the impresstion that Landon was a staunch isolationist. The matter is further complicated when Landon gives a speech talking about "Gearing the American Economy for war" Although Landon states that "These measures are simply for the defense of our great nation" no one...even many in the government really know just what he is up too. In August of 1940 Landon soldifies his growing support for the allies in giving the British old destroyers for Basing rights around the British Empire....The public is unhappy but getting used to the idea of a not so isolated USA. However, The matter is dragged through the coals again when the Allies ask for supplies and support from a "neutral" America...Landon says NO....Just in time for the Elections in November, Landon makes this serrious mistake....What little trust and confidence the American public had in Landon was gone... No one knows which way he is going on many issues....and many think he might not Either.

************************
Alfred Landon looses the Election to Henry A Wallace The american people look for a leader who at least has any path to follow and Wallace was that man....But can he fix the damage done by the Poorly run Landon Administration?

Next Section: A Hoover in every living room and a Wallace in Every Garage...
