I've decided to post an AAR for Australia, from 1936, with TFH 4.02.

I've played a game for Australia through to 1944, which was my first ever proper HoI3 game, it was good fun but I can see some things I could have improved on, so I'm going for it again.

Australia joining the Axis is ahistorical, so to make the thread a bit more interesting I will pretend that Saruman (from lord of the rings) is the leader of Australia from 1936. I think he makes a reasonable figure, as a) he is a power-hungry leader so makes a good Axis leader, and b) he was only a secondary threat in LoTR, not as big or powerful as Sauron, and Australia is only small (in terms of IC, resources, manpower). If Australia was Saruman, then maybe Japan is Sauron. Germany and Italy are on the other side of the world after all, so there won't be much direct interaction with them.

I may make references to my first game, using Saruman's magical powers as a plot device for "seeing the future". :)

Perhaps an Axis Australia will prove to be enough to tip the Axis into overall victory? Or will America still dominate all as usual? Let's find out!

Laying out plans - Jan-Oct 1936

Saruman looked through the paperwork his minions ministers had provided him, consulted his crystal ball and decided on his strategy. First up was the politics & espionage departments.

"We shall establish the Australian Empire and it shall be glorious. Tell the people to Prepare For War with the tyrants from New Zealand!"

"But sire, The Kiwis are a peace-loving people whom we have enjoyed good relations for many years now! Our people will not want to go to war with them!"

"Never fear. I shall teach our agents something of the mind-control techniques I have mastered. Before long people will come round to my way of thinking. Muahahah!"

"Very good, sire!"

"And do try and encourage people to sign up to the forces. We do have a lack of manpower despite our massive country, it is something we will always need to be working on."

"Yessir! Any last requests?"

"Yes, inform the German Ambassador that, if conflict should break out, Australia will stand side-by-side with Germany."

"OK sir, I'll get right on it!"

Prepare For War event chosen. Loads of spies sent to NZ to increase threat. Manpower-increasing minister brought in. Started drifting towards Axis.

Next up was tade.

"Let us trade with the world, to give us the resources we need so that we can conquer them."
"A wise strategy sire. We are short on rare materials - shall we stock up on them?"
"No. This is why I'm in charge - I can forsee the future path we shall take. Once conquest begins, the Australian Empire will have all the rare materials we shall ever need."
"You are indeed wise and beneficent, King Saruman! What then shall we seek in trade?"
"Give away our spare supplies. We can make them anytime. Stockpiles metals and energy that are harder to come by. The American fools should be good for trading almost anything."

Then, production was decided upon. There didn't seem much military that could be built that would stand the test of time. So instead, convoys and transport ships were ordered, along with an expansion of the port in Darwin.

"We need factories to fuel our wars. Chop down the trees and use them to power the factories!"
"Sire, I beg your pardon but what are trees? I cannot see them anywhere in our resource inventory?"
*sigh* "Very well then. Just build more factories."
"I am sorry sir but we don't know how to! In fact we have no experience in constructing anything!"
"Good grief, what a backwards people I have! OK new plan - learn how to build factories, and expand our naval port in Darwin so our people can gain some experience in construction, and the expanded port will be useful in the future."
"Very good sire, I'll get right the people right on it!"

Finally it was over to the technology boffins.

"What do you MEAN, there is no orc technology?"
"Sire! I... I... please have mercy! May I suggest marines instead? They can wear green, and are good at invading islands...?"
"Hmmm, that's not such a bad idea, given all the islands around us. I will spare you after all. For now. Also, we are going to work towards building carriers and cruisers."
"But sir Saruman! We know nothing of them! Would not battleships and destroyers be a better idea, and build on our existing knowledge?"
"Your idea has some merit, however in the far future they will eventually be obsolete to carriers. Besides, it's only a game."
"If you say so, sire! I'll get the boffins right on it!"

Here is the research screen, and also the stockpiling of resources. More will be revealed in due course, but Saruman has his plans. Progress is being made towards carriers, IC construction, and marine research in the new year. Education has just finished - it takes so long with no practical but I think the Aussies need it. Leadership is a real constraint.

Interesting, I'll keep an eye on this one. Though shouldn't you have started in New Zealand?

And you wouldn't be reading Saruman of Many Devices would you?

This looks.....interesting. I'll follow along as an Axis Australia can Always do some good :)

Saruman leading Iseng- I mean Australia, eh? Time to break out the Isengard theme! To quote Saruman:

"A new power is rising. Its victory is at hand!"

SotV/knightofhonour - Thanks for the plot ideas, I will try and weave them into the narrative! No I haven't read Saruman of many devices, maybe I' will though, I do like a good fan fiction. I would recommend Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (what if Harry Potter knew lots about science before he went to Hogwarts?) - http://hpmor.com/

sebas379 - welcome aboard!

I have played most of the next update (to Jan/Feb 1938) and it will probably be up tomorrow. If anyone has any specific advice then please do offer it as I am not an experienced player, but an enthusiastic learner :)

In fact I have some quick questions around carriers as I've never had them before. Do escort carriers have 1 CAG and regular carriers have 2? And can you attack land targets with them - if so how (ie do you just right-click to attack just as you would with land units?).

That's correct

And can you attack land targets with them - if so how (ie do you just right-click to attack just as you would with land units?).
Exactly. Select the CAG, target the province, and ground attack should be possible. (disclaimer)Unless something changed that I'm not aware of, that is

Thanks for the response sebas379. Now on with the update.

Plans taking shape - Oct 1936 - 19th Jan 1938

Much time had passed, and Saruman called a council to give updates on how various plans for the Australian Empire were going.

First up was the topic of aircraft carriers.
"Well sire, we have researched some basic aircraft technology, but have a while to go before we have up to date technology."
"Good work. Begin construction of a prototype model for now, whilst we continue research."
"Aye sir!"

Escort Carrier being built, to keep practicals up and so I will have something to show before the 2 years it takes to build a carrier. In case you're wondering about CAG's, the plan is to license them, probably from Japan.

"Speaking of research, do you have the latest research report to show me?"
"Yessir!"

"Now then, I believe you are minister of industry? What news do you have?"
"Well Mister Saruman sir, we are finding the building of factories to be a complex job, no-one really knows much about how to do it, but we are getting there."
"Enough waffle - what's the end result?"
"Two new factories will be up in around 6 months sir."
"Excellent. Once they are done, build two more."
"An excellent idea - we should be a bit better at it come then from the practice."

I may have to scale back to one in order to get other things built, we'll see.

"Now how about resources? Are our stockpiles growing as ordered?"
"Yessir! The piles are growing high, especially metal and energy as ordered!"
"Excellent, sounds a straightforwards job then?"
"Oh, no, sir, countries keep cancelling their deals and we have to make new ones! The Americans are proving to be great trade allies though."
"Hmm, well, good work then. And our supplies?"
"They are high too sir as requested."
"Indeed, supplies are always useful and there hasn't been much for us to build recently."

Here you can see how the stockpiles have increased. Supplies make for good "stored IC" enabling supplies to be run at a deficit in the future if required.

"Now then Chief of forces, how are our modern armed forces coming along?"
"Well sir, as you know, we are behind technologically and industrially so there is limited work we can do for now, but our first elite squadron of marines will be fully trained in a couple of months."
"Excellent, quality over quantity must be our mantra for now. Do you have an overview of our production to show me?"
"Of course sir, here it is."

Saruman left the meeting content with how things were proceeding. The forces were still small, but the pieces were being put into place. He did wish he had more factories, though. He was also pleased with how the elections went. How funny it was, he thought, that the people thought their votes counted for something - all real power rested with him. The Liberal and Country League stayed in power in a close-run election, but for some reason Isaac Alfred Isaacs, the previous head of state, also appointed himself head of government. Saruman was fine with this - for some reason having him there increased the output of factories. He set the espionage services to support the Liberal and County league - perhaps, many years from now, they will become so popular that some stricter civil laws could be enacted.

Will you be raising any divisions of uruk-hai? Hopefully armed with mg-34s and panzershreks?

The clouds are gathering - Feb 1938 - Feb 1939

Saruman was on his way with his chief of staff to inspect his new land armed forces.
"You have told them of the new names for their divisions?"
"Yessir, they have all been fully briefed!"
"And how did they take it?"
"Well sir, they were a bit unsure but ultimately we all trust that our leader knows best."
"Too right. It's hard not to know best with over 2,000 years of experience."

*****************************

"You look in fine condition, my fighting Uruk-Hai!"
"Yessir, we are the best of the best!"
"What is your name, commander?"
"C.S. Steele, sir!"
"Steele? Can't we change it to something more threatening? Like Grishnak?"
"Sire, I'm afraid the game code does not allow for easy changing of names sir!"
"Oh well, we'll just have to make do then."

20z8oso.png

"And you, Mister Fergusson, can I inspect your goblin forces?"
"Yessir, here they are for your perusal."

n509e0.png

"And what are the total numbers?"
"24,000 Uruk-Hai and 10,000 goblins."
"I think we'll need more, but it's a good start."

*****************************

Saruman left the barracks and went back to Orthanc. This, he had decided, sounded a lot cooler & intimidating than "Provisional Parliament House." A title more in keeping with being a member of the Axis - who the Australians had joined in October 1938. First up he caught up with minster of industry.

"How's our factory building program coming along?"
"Well sir, the 2 factories finished and 2 more are under construction just as you requested sir, and should be finished in November."
"And are we better at building them now as you predicted?"
"Oh yes sir, much better!"
"And are we building anything else?"
"Yessir, you complained about feeling sea-sick on the way to Darwin, so we are constructing roads there."
"Excellent work!"

6.87IC and 16 months per IC, much better than over 8IC and 20 months thanks to a lot of IC efficiency tech and construction practical that has reached the lofty heights of 1.4!!

"Now then, how are our aircraft carrier plans coming along?"
"Well sir, more advances aircraft carrier technology is in progress, it will be done before our Escort Carrier is complete."
"Good stuff. Order a full-sized carrier to be constructed once the Escort is complete."
"Very good sir. It will however take 2 years to build."
"Well, you can't rush these things I suppose. And how about planes to go on the aircraft?"
"We have paid the Germans for some designs - they should be built by November."

And then it was over to the research labs. They had recently told Saruman about rockets, which he really liked the sound of.

"How goes the rocket research?"
"Sire, our research into rocket artillery is underway!"
"Good, good...now how about those secrets I have told you about seeing things far away?"
"Ah yes, we decided to call that 'RADAR' and are researching that at the moment."
"Are the capital letters important?"
"Oh yes, definitely. But it's not like it's an acronym or anything, it just looks cooler."
"Okaaayyy...... Anything else you are working on?"
"Just some more research into making our Uruk-hai and goblins better equipped and trained."
"Good work! Keep it up!"

Finally it was to the resource department.

"Give me a brief reminder of our strategy and how it is going."
"Well, Saruman sire, it was decided that we had more than enough rares for now and that we would soon have our own plentiful source of them, so we are no long bringing in excess rares. This has meant we have been able to cancel some of our supply exports, thus being able to direct more of our industrial output to production."
"Very good. And the metal and energy stockpiles?"
"Still growing sire!"
"That's all well and good for now then. We shall review later in the year."

**********************************************

With that, Saruman went back to his private office and reviewed the latest reports.

On the espionage front, ruling party support was slowly bearing fruit, up from around 25% at the time of election to 40% now. The best war laws were denied to him however, as the Australians weren't at war and were unable to convince the world that New Zealand was enough of a threat. Nonetheless, Saruman's powers told him that war would be here by the end of the year. Indeed, Germany had already started expanding their own empire, though not a shot had yet been fired.

Things were definitely coming together. War was brewing, and the Australians would be ready to claim the empire that was rightfully theirs.

**********************************************

Quick question - Italy hasn't joined the Axis yet - is it likely to and is there any (non-cheaty) way of making them? I want the Pact of Steel strategic effect!

Reactions:
I played on a bit, managed to declare on New Zealand around March 1939, and then things went distinctly ahistorical...

Do you think I should carry on or play again without declaring? I don't know how badly the game is broken by the world war kicking off pre Molotov/Ribbertrop and all that. It is, at least, in keeping with the theme of power hungry Saruman wanting New Zealand for himself.

It can certainly result in some interesting events around the globe. I say it's up to you, it might be interesting to go on, but your call.

A new power rising - Feb 1939 - May 1939

Things were happening in Europe. Hitler demanded the Sudentland, and the Allies agreed. Hitler made some threatening noises about Poland, and the Allies guaranteed their borders. War seemed ever-more inevitable, and indeed the Australians seemed more amenable to it. So Saruman arranged an address to the nation.

"Fellow Australians! We have known for a long time that the Australians have been limited to this tiny, resource-poor island. We must expand our empire in order to secure our destiny. The world shall know that a new power is rising. It's victory is at hand. The power...of... AUSTRALIA!"

With that, Saruman declared a limited war on New Zealand, in April 1939. Saruman had always felt drawn to the country, for reasons he couldn't quite explain. However, the sight of a former colony declaring on another was all too much for the Brits, who decided now would be a good moment to start World War 2 by bringing all her allies into war against Germany.

14mcgev.png

The immediate plus side of this was that I was able to activate all the best laws. :) This led to my escort carrier being instantly completed, for example.

The Italians finally agreed to join the Axis, though they seemed more worried about trains than armies.

2jf8km.png

Germany meanwhile, seemed quite ready for the start of the war. Indeed, in the space of 5 weeks, all this happened...

wi4ncx.png

Meanwhile, the Australian attack on New Zealand began. The city of Auckland in the north was taken without resistance. Saruman ordered it fortified by goblins and some older units, which was a good job as it soon came under attack.

k3ayid.jpg

It was a close run thing but the defences held. They even tried a second time, but failed again - here are the results of the second, bloodier battle.

2vnm7oi.png

Meanwhile, the Uruk-Hai were directed to cut off these forces from the rest of the island - they landed in the west and marched across New Zealand's rugged terrain to capture the port in the east, meeting only an HQ unit on the way.

vskoyo.png

How much of the New Zealand's forces are in this pocket I don't know, but they are low on org and will be running out of supplies. Japan have also launched multiple invasions in the few weeks since the war started, landing on multiple Dutch East Indie Islands. Saruman was displeased as he hoped to capture these for himself. Saruman also received an update from his German allies regarding how the war in Europe was going. The answer was, pretty good for the Axis.

Excellent going. But I think there is a little typo here:

in April 2014

I'm not completely getting it. Germany took the Sudetenland peacefully. but if Britain guaranteed Poland, that means Germany also took the rest of the Czech republic. Then why did the Allies declare war instead of the Germans? Something is amiss here... If it was because of you, they should've declared on you, right? I must be forgetting something here.
At least Germany isn't wasting any time getting to work, that's good to see.

I think I'm right in my timing but I may not be. Mainly I noticed that I could now declare on New Zealand, but I couldn't before (neutrality of 29ish versus threat of 25.3, being 25 for being in axis and 0.3 threat I had managed to raise against New Zealand). I think that was the "guarantee Poland" event but it may not have been - whatever it was, it was an event that let me declare war. Germany took the rest of the Czech Republic by force (see the popup message). The Allies declared war a day or two after I declared on New Zealand, it was pretty quick. I suppose they could've declared a limited war on me but decided to declare on my faction instead.

I have fixed the April 2014, good spot. Saurman has been alive for so long, he forgets what the year is sometime.... :)

Just imagine, looking at the Australian empire at the end, Isengard theme blaring away...

This is the goal you work towards! Show the world the true strength of Australia/Isengard!

Ah okay, that makes some sense.
They can't declare limited war on you. If they attack you, it's a defensive war for the Axis, drawing all Axis members in.
Now, on to overrun the world with Uruk-Hai!
