thank you for making this thread available.

Well, I have nothing important to say about Oe. I'll just say Pax vobiscum! :)

Polish AAR 1492-1509

First things first: war! On January 1st, 1492, war was declared on Pommern, who held one of our core provinces. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was facing not only them, but also their allies in Bremen, Holstein and Mecklemburg. A swift campaign in the Pomeranian marshlands proved the superiority of the Polish winged hussars, with Pommern being occupied within March. Next up, Mecklemburg would fall in October the same year, and the country was promptly annexed to the Polish lands. The rich center of trade there would start to bring nice ducats to the war-weary coffers of the Sejm.

Bremen was next on the list, and an all-cavalry offensive was mounted. Considered by some military advisers an overkill, it featured a Polish hussar army numbering 40 thousand against the small Bremen defense force of merely 3 thousand infantrymen. The battle was quick, and the conquest of the castle followed not long after. Peaces were signed: Pommern was vassalized and had to give up Eastern Pomerania, Bremen was vassalized as well, but Holstein somehow escaped unscathed through a diplomatic error (signed alliance peace with Bremen by mistake).

After the annexation of Hessen by Brandenburg, Poland considered the Casus Belli was well founded and declared war on the Margravate, who brought its Saxonian allies along. Again Polish armies proved their worth, destroying virtually any German resistance, and Brandenburg, as well as Saxony, was occupied within a year. After a thorough looting of the rich German lands, peace was signed, with Brandenburg becoming a vassal, but Saxony escaping because of the same previous diplomatic blunder.

The money gained by war was put, of course, into raising a new army. This time Holstein would not escape. After claiming their throne, and therefore gaining a Casus Belli, war was declared. Prussia and Hungary joined, as well. Needless to say the battles were over as soon as the hussars appeared on the battlefields. Holstein was vassalized, Prussia lost a province to Lithuania, and Hungary was forced to pay some hefty war reparations.

During the hassle, Brandenburg saw fit to continue their petty German squabbles, and that brought them in a war against the powerful Austrian alliance. Thanks to our diplomatic team's negotiation skills, our vassal was however allowed the annexation of Hannover to its territories. We also noted with great sadness the vassalization of Saxony by Austria.

In the meantime, Wallachia decided it would take advantage of the Polish army's presence in Central Europe and invade. King Olbracht's famous words upon hearing this were: "Wallachia? Hmmm, you woke me up for THAT? Let the others take care of it!" And the others took good care of it: Lithuania occupied Moldova, While Brandenburg occupied Wallachia proper. The Romanian principality was no more.

Peace ensued, with peaceful trading in the COTs of Europe. The Polish nation is on the rise, and set to re-assert its place among the great powers of Europe.

English AAR 1492-1509

At the outset of this great campaign, England found itself a nation of mediocrity with great potential for the future. Tax collectors were few and manufactories were nonexistant, though our fortifications were acceptable for the moment. Our land forces are weak in comparison to the great continental powers, even with Norfolk leading one of our glorious armies at the Scottish border. In terms of naval power England is above average, possessing a respectable sized fleet, though the training and morale of our sailors could certainly be better. No matter, all of these things will be set right in the future.

Diplomatically, England belongs to a strong alliance led by Spain and joined by Portugal and Naples. These allies were not called upon in supressing the petty Irish rebellions of 1492. English pride wouldn't have it. These were our lands and our mess to mop up. Wars abroad, however, were another matter. England decided to support Spain in its designs in Italy. Naples and Spain made short work of the Papal States yet held out for a better deal.

That better deal included the subjugation of Britanny, an ally of the Papal States. With Britanny abandoned by her liege, the King of France, England sensed oppurtunity. The moment Ireland was under control, English troops set sail for Bretagne and laid seige to its towns. With the people of England satisfied and rebellion risk low, the English King sent the great commander Norfolk from his post to assist in the conquest of Britanny. The provinces of Armor and Bretagne were taken under English control in the subsequent months.

Victory seemed assured just as thousands of French troops appeared on the horizon. Out of nowhere, the French army descended upon the recently conquered provinces of Bretagne and Armor, killing livestock and burning crops, yet cowardly refusing to give battle. The English, who themselves depended on the "generosity" of their conquered hosts felt the pangs of hunger immediately. With no wish to lose more men to these cowardly tactics or risk a wider war for minimal gains, the English withdrew and accepted several hundred ducats from Britanny in compensation for English lives lost and money wasted. The English withdrew, proud of their achievements, back to Cornwall.

In the meantime, several events occurred. First England considered, and ultimately accepted, a royal marriage with the Kingdom of Sweden. Though these upstarts possess few enviable provinces, they made short work of Denmark in a recent war. They may also one day build a great fleet to rival our own.

Second Denmark brazenly declared war upon our realm with, apparently, no goal in mind. Perhaps it was our ruthless suppression of Irish rebels or invasion of Britanny that inspired their moral indignation. We shall never know. Of more consequence is that the King of England, momentarily broke by supporting his armies, called upon his allies to engage Denmark. Portugal wisely and understandably dishonored this foolish request by the English king. Danish armies briefly attacked English soil, were repelled, and never returned. After many months of refusing a white peace (Denmark), the English tired of the war and bought peace for a handful of cash.

Third, the English acquired a couple of explorers to acquire knowledge of foreign shores in America. Several provinces full of potential for English colonists and merchants were discovered. As yet, however, the King of England hasn't seen fit to fully invest in there areas, knowing lands of greater riches abound and room for domestic growth and trade beckons.

*End of my AAR. Sorry if I was longwinded. Was just in the mood to write.

**That bit about France and cowardice were for entertainment value only, for the sake of the AAR. For the record, and for the good sportsmanship of the game, I hold no grudge against Jose for this action. I just want to make that perfectly clear.

bljak.
AAR that end's up with apology.
be free to call them scum and their king worthless coward if you will.
this is diplomacy thread, insults are haf of the fun :D
and btw sweden has no intention to rival england, as a matter of fact we strive toward friendly relationship. we hope that royal marriage is just first step in bringing our countries closer together.

Portugal - Hoist the Sails

No one thought much about the small nation of Portugal. It was never included in the other players scheming or ever considered in the big diplomatic actions. Portugal would toot it's horn hoping for other countries to recognize it's indignation, but c'mon, who can take seriously a country of greedy merchants with 10 MP?

This gave Portugal's leader an inferiority complex. He sends warnings, they laugh. He sends royal marriages, they decline(portugese women are notoriously ugly). So, this furious little man decides to leave Europe and European culture. His country would never have a standing in Europe and could never compete with Spain,England,France,Sweden...ohh the pain.

The Polish monarch pitied the little man with the low self esteem, and entered a royal marriage(Polocks aren't too pretty themselves). A FRIEND! A FRIEND! Unforutnately, this triggered the kings verbosity, and soon he was sending delegates to Poland almost constantly. The Polish leader was very generous in giving needed advice to the king.

As I was saying, this king decided to leave Europe. He looked hopefully to Africa. He would much rather be the big fish in the little pond, than vice versa. So the pagan nation of Benin was annexed, and a CoT was acquired. Unfortunately, the Portugese economy wasn't good enough to trade aggressively in this CoT(due to mismanagement, of course). So he moved on to Xhosa, and annexed them. He moved on throughout the coasts of Africa, setting up colonies and annexing the demonic pagans.

Oh yeah, he also set up a colony in Brazil. Not much, but once more funds are acquired the goal of the king is to build a colonial empire in the newly discovered South America. After this, he hopes to build some African colonies and make his way to India where rumors of rich trade and weak nations cause him to fantasize each night.

Oman, is also a target. They possess two CoT that would be invaluable to the Portugese economy. Besides this, Portugal just hopes to have good relations with all of Europe and to do whatever it takes to dominate the colonial scene. WHATEVER, it takes.

Do you expect us to be that rational in the XVI century? c'mon :)

With the Interregnum in the archduchy of Austria and the following power vacuum in the Holy Roman Empire, the king of Poland would like to assert himself as protector of the Northern German principalities, and main bastion of Christendom against the Ottoman menace.

Such are the times that we live in that the most Christian King of England must feel more threatened by the bloodthirsty warmongering of Poland than the heathan Ottomans. These past years Poland has engaged in endless warfare, ravaging northern German lands to fulfill its own sense of importance and greed. Provoked into war or not, Poland must learn prudence.

The King of England asks that further armed conquests of this region cease immediately. Be diplomatic in your expansion of power, and foreign nations will not be so alarmed. His Majesty Henry VIII finds this to be a reasonable request and will look quite poorly on a disagreement.

way i see it, poland made one step too far when invading port.
they where dancing on the edge all the time with their expansionistic politics. they are already doing very good in trade, poland has 5-4 traders in all european cots, getting filthy rich. they are controling more european trade then spain! trying to get those maps was simply too much. leting them go wild all over the world... brrr i shiver just thinking what they would become.

at least some kind of punishment is needed to pacifie them, reducing polish trading potential witch fuels their enormous war machine seems like a good idea (so cot to sweden seem apropriate  )

but im against nobodyreal 'let's destroy evil doers' rhetoric too. poland deserves another chance, currently this war got to be damaging for their economy and worst of all making them completely dependent on foreign support.
i think it would benifit us all if we arrange fair peace deal before start of the next session, polish relaying totally on OE support and not accepting defeat is unacceptable and will just antagonise 'allies' even more. poland is on a good way too lose any suport in europe by throwing themselfes to sultans arms like this.

not that i got anything against great sultan him self, may Allah bless him. :eek:o

anyway my point is this, fnuco tried to become uber, western powers showed that they will not tolerate it, so now there are two things he can do, push the war to the end. witch will then be just that, war to the end, or give up on 2-3 prov repair damaged relations and move on.
it would be devastating for all of those who dowed pol to end up defeated, effectively it would show that allready now we are too weak to mean anything on a world stage. if 3 of us cant defeat one poland then what can we do?
so to conclusion if poland wont give up, sweden is ready to figth to the bitter end, and i do believe it wont be our end.

In response to uls post in KoH thread.

Spain had no aspirations to attack Poland. Poland invaded Portugal, Spain's ally, what was Spain to do? What was I to do, call off my allies from responding to a war that Poland started? But I'm not complaining about the turn of events, I'm just trying to make clear the reason why I attacked Poland. It wasn't that I was being an opportunist, but I saw the threat that Poland posed, especially when backed by the OE.

I'm not trying to ruin Fnuco's country, but I will take a few German provinces to make up for what I lost in Hungary. If anything, I am taking three Polish provinces to compensate for the three provinces that I will inevitably loose once I engage in war vs your empire. So really, it is just a transfer of power.

Now, as for a peace deal, the rules state that if the country gets to -99 peace, it MUST accept peace. After all of the soldiers that Sweden lost, the leader, the soldiers and the economic hardship inflicted on Spain and England, it is not fair to say that all of us together can only take three provinces. This war cost me, in troops and in being looted, probably 400 ducats, and I imagine the costs for Spain is 5 times that, with war exhaustion and all.

Fnuco, as far as your country being playable after this, it may be. You have a powerful ally, a great war monger controlling the most powerful nation in the game. Also, with France entering into the game, we can still have a fun game. If all else fails, and Poland is split up among our nations, you can pick NL and dominate the colonial scene.

For now, my peace terms are very generous. I'll take two German provinces and Mecklemburg to Sweden. THAT will be my 3 provinces, and hopefully Sweden will agree to back out of the war with that agreement. As far as Spain, I think they would agree with this so they can focus more on colonizing and converting.

I think grabah expressed the two choices very well. I hope you will make the right choice and restore your standing among the European powers.

Germany shouldn't have invaded the Rhineland! :)

sounds like a reasonable deal. Gentlemen, my congratulations, that's the way.

the Ottoman Empire doesn't want to go to war in fact. I already got what I wanted. However I'm curious about how diplomacy will evolve after all these fast decades we all lived. wow, we had a lot of changes...

heh grabah, I know what people think about OE, it's tooo big. However I'm rational enough not to take it personal about your first impressions. Afterall you're quite far away, you're safe. :) well, we managed to see each other in meckenburg, I've never reached that far as OE, heh.

Austria AAR - The Battle for Christian Supremacy

After some years of inactvity, the nation of Austria was much behind it's neighbors. The monstrous France was to the east, A budding Poland to the North, and the Turkish beast quietly brooded to the South, always an imposing nation. The monarch, Karl, decided that the only way that Austria could compete with the neighboring powers was to take control of the rich Italian cities that were being occupied by France. So using the funds that mysteriously found themselves in the national treasury, Karl set about constructing a powerful force to place under the very competent leader, von Frunsberg.

As conscripts were being hired, delegates were sent to the nations of Poland, Spain, and England. Poland assured that they would not interfere in this war, and so Karl went forward with plans. The nation of France was a very powerful one with an economy that was twice the size of the Austrian economy. So the delegates entreated the Spain and England to join the war against the nation of France, when called upon.

Now having a pretty formidable force underneath von Frusberg, an official declaration of war was made on France. A large army under Frunsberg was dispatched to Paris where a French army of 43 thousand was massacred under his brilliant leadership. A siege was initiated on Paris and a strategic error was made. Under estimating the power of the French, The Austrian monarch split up his forces and besieged the city of Champagne.

Meanwhile, troops were placed in the mountainous region of Tirol to defend southern Austria against the French and a brigade of 23k troops were sent to besiege the independent city-state of Lorraine.

The French recoiled from their initial defeat at Paris by hiring a large calvary unit to massacre Frunsberg's army on the plain of Champagne. A battle ensued in which Frunsberg's unit was almost annihilated. Rethinking his battle plan, Frunsberg moved to Luxembourg to recruit more units and to eliminate the main French force. As the forces of Austria were gathering, the French initiated a siege on Flandern. Frunsberg gathered a force of 63k troops, and eliminated the 43k that was besieging Flandern.

With this, the French monarch became frustrated and resigned from the throne, cursing the God's and the capriciousness of the Austrian monarchy.

Austria claimed three Italian provinces, and peace ensued. Soon Bohemia joined the realm of Austria, greatly increasing their economic strength. The Germanic state of Pfalz also accepted diplomatic annexation and joined the burgeoning Austrian nation.

The next years would be disastrous for Austria and leave her in a state of confusion. Messengers burst into the quarters of the monarch obviously perturbed by something. They brought news that the Turkish armies had landed in the city of Venice, a center of trade that was vital for European dominance. Quickly, the Austrian monarch ordered troops to be moved to the province of Tirol to be ready to strike in case the Ottomans annexed the city. A warning was sent to the Ottomans, that if Venice was claimed, A joint alliance of Poland and Austria would oppose them.

Suddenly, another terrible event took place. The nation of Hungary was under attack from the Turks. The Turks had an army that was extremely powerful. Austria realized their oversight, and quickly called on Poland to honor their word and help drive the Muslim beast out of Europe. Poland refused, explaining that the agreement was nullified when Austria refused to grant Poland military access during the Spanish-Polish war.

A force was assembled, and sent to Maros, where the entire army was destroyed by the Ottomans. This sealed the fate of Hungary and caused the Turks to inherit the vast Hungarian plains. Recognizing the hard position that his nation was in, Karl accepted peace with the Turks, forfeiting two valuable provinces.

Furious at the betrayal of the Polish, Austria quickly assembled a force and declared war on Poland. Poland was engaged in warfare with Sweden and Spain, so Karl thought he could compensate for the incredible loss he suffered by taking some of the valued German provinces that were under Polish rule.

Pandemonium everywhere. The Polish managed to fight off three nations for a time, and constantly drove back the Austrian attempts to invade their lands. It was clear that the Poles had some form of financial support, and we knew that only one nation would have the economic power to fund Poland in their war, the Ottoman Empire. The wars were carried on with Poland unwilling to yield territories. Russia has recently expressed interest in joining the war as a separate power, obviously intending to grab some of the much valued Lithuanian lands.

What will become of the Austrian nation, we can't tell. With the Ottomans preparing for war, and Poland still having a few decisive punches to throw, the only hope lies in the Christian nations seeing the eminent threat of a Ottoman/Poland alliance, and continuing in this grand war, come hell or high water.

English AAR

The English king tilted his cup back and drank thirstily, reaching for oblivion. For months, ill news haunted his court and his mind like a stalking demon. Rebels in Meath, in Calais, in York, in Lancashire. Henry's realm was beset by civil unrest and there was very little he could do about it. He stared at the empty cup.

******

January 1525 was only the beginning of Henry's troubles, though he did not yet know it. Poland agitated in Germany, France grew in power across the channel, and the Ottoman behemoth continued to consume the great centers of trade with insatiable hunger. Spain remained a staunch and powerful ally and good relations were maintained with Sweden. And Austria, intent on reversing its fortunes and removing France from Italy immediately sent delegates to London.

The delegates were received warmly. England promised to support Austria's cause, with troops if necessary. England was already preparing an army for just such an occasion. But England would not go to war without its ally Spain, and the Spanish king wisely kept the alliance out of the Austrian-French conflict, choosing to fund Austria financially instead. England then decided to move its troops north to take Scotland, sending money to Austria when possible.

War with Scotland was quick and relatively painless and Strathclyde was added to our realm. Across the Atlantic our conquistador moved to the interior of North America, searching out native peoples to conquer and lands to colonize. But the spirit of English adventure was greatly frustrated as no admiral was available to explore more sealanes for English shipping. Our maps and knowledge of the world beyond Europe remained quite limited, much to the irritation of the king.

******

"News from the Highlands sire. Scottish rebels have besieged our fortifications there. Others are moving south to Strathclyde."

Henry looked up from his empty drinking vessel. He had just sent the remnants of his army to Calais to relieve that besieged city. Or was it Meath? Henry could hardly remember all the various rebels springing up around his kingdom. Worst still, the English army was basically leaderless. The last intact army was led by an unknown lord from the lesser nobility.

"That Polish bastard!" Henry slammed his fist to the table in a fit of rage. He still brooded over the events that led him to this point.

"Bring me another drink...."

******

After the war with Scotland, things were looking rather good. The general stability of the country was rather low, but the people dutifully served their king. Investments in the navy and a great shipyard were welcome news to the kingdom. Investment in the research of trade was also coming along smoothly. The feeling of the king and his people that things were on the up in England were pervasive.

These feelings were sometimes interrupted by delegates from abroad, warning us of Polish power and intentions and the various wars they incited for their own aggrandizement. Reports that Poland was amassing a huge fleet were brushed aside as wild exxagerations. The English felt unthreatened in their island home. Such a disposition was to cause a great deal of hardship for England.

In a moment, news poured in that Poland declared war on Portugal and laid siege to its capital. England and Spain immediately declared war on Poland. Spain was able to repel Polish troops from Portugal before official records could be looted. Shortly after, the English fleet met its Polish counterpart near the German Bight and was badly mauled and forced to limp back to Anglia. Though less skilled than the English, Poland had indeed built a great number of ships. England began to save to build a a more formidable fleet.

As time went by, England felt the danger of Poland was decreasing. A feeling of absolute complacency descended on the court. Poland would never dare bring troops to English soil! It was at this time, and for various other reasons of state, that England broke with Rome and the Catholic Church. Though it greatly upset the stability of the realm it filled the treasury with money and assets of the Catholic Church. This money was badly needed to build fine arts academies and refineries across the realm. Henry's mind was filled with a great vision of a prosperous England.

Almost simultaneously, complacency and dreaming were replaced by the harsh reality of a large Polish army at the gates of London. Assaults began immediately and took a heavy toll on the garrison. English troops were recalled from America and Scotland. Though leaderless, they launched a desperate gamble to dislodge Polish troops and their great general, but ultimately failed. London was taken, maps were stolen, and the Polish army set sail for home.

******

"Rebels have nearly taken York sire. We must do something!"

Henry's advisor stared intently, waiting for the word to raise fresh troops.

"That coward! To attack us when we were down, when our kingdom was torn by religion. He never would have done so if we were strong. To fight a worthy adversary is not in the nature of the Polish king. That papist slave! Coward!"

The advisor slinked away, head down, embarrassed by this childish display.

Henry slipped into dispair and felt the earth washing away from beneath him. He had never known failure and humiliation of this magnitude in his entire reign. His pride was beaten black and blue.

******

Despite the lack of funds to properly maintain an army abroad and to put down rebels at home, Henry sent a small army to help the coalition of Spain, Austria, and Sweden against Poland. The army laid siege to Holstein. After a few months a much larger Polish army appeared on the horizon. The two armies engaged and English troops were completely slaughtered. The entire army was lost.

At the same time, rebels appeared across the realm. The people were exhausted from this war and showed it through outright revolt. Englands last army was sent around the kingdom trying to put out one fire after another but to no avail. At times it seemed Henry ruled over London alone. The flood of reports on rebellions couldn't be counted. It was unclear how the king would keep the country intact and continue to remain at war with Poland.

How did it all come to this?

******

Henry awoke early. His head throbbed from the excessive drink. He refused breakfast or company. For many hours he stared out the window in deep thought.

"I will not have my reign remembered for this. Glory awaits me and my people. We shall have it."

What would the Habsburg Archduke desire from the King of Poland in terms of lands?
Perhaps a diplomatic agreement can be reached, with the inclusion of his Spanish counterpart.

Is this approved by Austria?

If so, this is the Polish counter-offer:

NAP (date of ending to be decided)

Sweden is gracefully offered a White Peace and NAP.
