The nations of Ace Combat:

(I'm not very pleased with these, I may re-do them later)

I'm going to be making some test provinces just to make sure the map works right before I go off and make everything, only to find out it's screwed.
The shading (the dark parts that run along the coasts) is done. Before, I was using a brush and just outlining the coast, but one of photoshop's many features, inner shadow, seems to replicate it perfectly.
I will also definitely be making rivers.

i always thought that ace combat was kinda like the real world, except maybe God decided to arrange the continents a bit(or a lot) differently.
Untitled-3.jpg

the black circled area kinda looks like europe, upper half of africa, mid east, and scandinavia. the orange has a little alaska thing goin. anyway, this mod will be great! are u gonna simulate the yuktobanian super carrier subs? and isaf shud have a very severe peacetime penalty since in the game, they were initially beaten by erusea due to their unreadiness. sounds a lot like the ussr. ;)
and for the flags, did u just search thru the flag thread? cuz im the one that requested yuktobania, erusea, isaf, osea, and belka's flag.
also, both belka and erusea are gonna kinda be like ww2 germany rite? start small, get big. srry for the long post, but didnt yuktobania have a naval base where emmeria is? i believe thats where thee hrimfaxi was.

@coolguy684: I don't want to get caught up in the scenario right now. The map is my main priority. I will say though that yes, super weapons like the Yuktobanian subs and the Estovakian flying aircraft carriers will be included. I got almost all of the flags from various resources on the web. I didn't have the idea to search though the flag request thread to be honest. The ones that I couldn't find I made up (like Kaluga, Romny, Sotoa, Wielvakia, etc..).

No offense, but no way you are going to finish this. I know how it is when you start a mod, you feel like you can take on the world! but after awhile you get tired. I love Ace Combat and I wish you best of luck, but you'll need more than luck to pull this one off. So many mods are started out there every day for all kinds of games and so many of their dreams are smashed to pieces. I've taken courses in project management and I'm telling you, you need more than skill to finish a project, any project. You need planning, commitment, discipline, management skills (if working as a team) and much more.

Sorry for being pessimistic, but I just wanted to warn you not to get your hopes up. I would love for you to prove me wrong:)

I see your courses in project management also covered demotivation.

OP, probably the biggest thing you need to get done is the map. I'd suggest starting with one of the smaller continents so that you can test it out through battlescenarios.

Did you fail at a mod? Just because you couldn't hack it doesn't mean this guy won't be able to accomplish something great.

I know what you mean. I don't give up on things easily though. Fortunately, I can work in photoshop for hours on end and not get bored as drawing is one of my hobbies. As for making scenarios, I have written a few for myself and they are not that hard. I will try my best to prove you wrong.

@Axin: I agree. I will start on the eastern most continent (which is called Usea). Before I start making provinces though I want to see if the map looks alright in game. I've already run into a problem in the MapMaker program though so I may ask for some help from more senior map modders.

EDIT: Found out the problem with the MapMaker. Turns out I had the blocks in RGB mode instead of the grayscale index that Paradox used.

The map works perfect in game. I'm now going to move onto provinces but I've run into a bit of a dilemma.

I have two ways of making province borders. I could:
A. Draw them all in by hand which means that it will take a very long time and the lines won't be congruent or evenly spaced, but they will look similar to the original HoI province borders. Here's a picture that took me 5 minutes:

B. Use a different pattern that will cut the time of making this map in half. The dotted lines will be evenly spaced and congruent. The simple line I think just looks better. Here's a picture of three possible patterns I could use that took me 30 seconds:

Ultimately it's up to me but I'd like to hear your opinion.

The big dots looks good and they are obviously easier to make.

Not really, I've never made anything but small mods. However there is no shortage of huge mod projects that fail. Look at any mod-webpage for a game and you can see huge number of ambitious projects that never get finished.

I never meant to discourage the modder, just wanted him aware of the risks. There is always ups and downs in any large project, the key thing is to be aware that there will be times when everything seems impossible and it seems that it will never get finished and if you know that you can prepare for it.

I have a huge respect for those who manage to finish mods, especially the ones that are made by large teams over extended periods of time. In the IT sector, over 70 % of all projects fail (at least that's what the teacher said), and those projects are handed by professionals, getting paid to work. Holding together a rag-tag team of modders with lives outside modding to handle, who don't get anything for their work except people yelling on the forums (when is it done?!) and the occasional pat on the back (no money) isn't easy.

Anyway I didn't mean to say that the project should be dropped or anything, just that the euphoria you get when you start a project won't last. Sort of like a relationship in that way, I'm not saying that it's not worth falling in love, just that it's a lot of hard work and those butterflies in your stomach won't last forever so don't build the relationship on that.

I thought that at the first moment when spotting this thread. Many, many projects with much less work required failed because of so much time required to finish the mod. And with a project of this size, the chances of a completion are infinitesimal. Not to talk about the map (which takes alot of work alone), you will need events, models, ministers, leaders, unitnames, AIs, teams, techs, pictures and balance to bring life in this world. All that you can't find in the AC universe (I've played AC2, 4, 5 and 6) since only small parts of information is given for some of the countries.

I am a big fan of the ace combat series, and I wish you the best of luck in this project.

Some suggestions.

Belka, Estovakia, and Erusea should all be disproportionally powerful compared to their size geographically, especially Erusea, who I remember was able to conquer the entire continental portion of ISAF. Belka should be fairly powerful industrially, and have territorial claims on parts of north Osea, and their other neighbours, but like Germany in the second world war, be unable to successfully sustain a long and protracted war. Estovakia should probably be the weakest of those three, since I remember that they were unable to fully secure all of Emmeria's territory. In terms of government, Belka would definitely be fascist, while Estovakia should be led by a military junta. I forget who was leading Erusea, I think they had some kind of a president, so I would probably make them paternal autocrat or something.

By the way, how do you plan to simulate the end of the Belkan war, when the Belkans dropped all of those nukes along their border? Will there be an event that will make those nuked provinces impassable to land units?

Anyway, it looks like you are making great progress. Keep up the great work!

I must say right from the start this is a wonderful enterprise. I have always loved Ace Combat and a mod that deals with its colourful wars would be amazing. Thats why I give you my utmost support. I'm not the greatest modder and have pretty bad computer skills, but I have spent over three years playing HOI and have recently spent alot of time going over and twiking the Kaiserreich events for myself. I'm no webmaster, but you have what little skills I possess.

Right now I guess we're still in the planning and drawing up of the whole concept, so I came up with some starting ideas you can decided to build upon or not.
We should assign tags to countries that have similar languages, cultures and histories as in OTL so that it makes it easy to mod and so that we don't have to go through ALL the army files changing the languages and names of units and divisions.
What I've come up with so far is this:
Belka - Germany - GER
Aurelia - Chile - CHL
Yuktobania - Soviet Union - SOV
Osea - United States - USA
North Point - Britain - ENG
Ustio - Czechoslovakia - CZE
Sapin - Spain - SPA
Nordland - Norway - NOR
Fato - Sweden - SWE
Wielvakia - Denmark - DEN
Gebet - Poland - POL
Ratio - Portugal - POR
etc etc...
The nice thing about it all is that there are only 32 countries to worry about. Given that ARM allows for about 280 tags, we'll have alot of room to work out all of the country details. We also have the benefit of not having to draw up mountains of events for tons of countries like in the Kaiserreich mod. I'm sure if someone asked we could also bring in some elements of the Modern Day Scenario II. That would look after alot of pictures I'm sure.

I can help you on some events (Dunno how to make them, i will learn someday, but an idea for them). Also, i can help you on the units, for example, the Imrpved Interceptor for Fato will be MiG21. And the one for Yuktobania, Mig29 Fulcrum.

If you want i can send PM's whit those names.

Basic Tubojet Figthers. (Early Fighters)

Sotoa: Mig 21
Paccia: F5
Antaria: Mig-27
Yuktobania: Mig-27
Romny: F5 -->( Under Osea Influence)
Wellow: F3D (F-10) Skyknight --> Country whit low/Lvl2 Airbases, maybe under civil war.
Osea: F5 - F4 Phantom
Fato: MiG21
Belka: MiG21
Aurelia: Mig27
Arden: F5
Verkehr: Mig21
Nordenavik: Mitsubishi F-1
Leasath: F4 Phantom
Ustio: F4 Phatom
N.P: F3D (F-10) Skyknight
ISAF: F5

Do you like it? more to come.

Thanks for all the support guys!
@Kaiser_Mobius: I agree with you on the strengths of Belka, Estovakia and Erusea. But, I do want to take this one step at a time. I'm not worrying about anything to with the scenario right now because it'd just be too much.

@Trot: Any help with events would be appreciated when I get done with the map. Also, I have the tags for all nations filled out but as I can see now some of mine are incorrect. Thanks! :)

@Torenico: The list is very nice, but as before, I cannot use them if the map is not done. Come back to me when it is :)

I will give you guys an update of the provinces pretty soon.

Ok nice, tell when its ready and i will post 'em!

I will start making them, probably whit a Pic Included. From the basic Tubojet to the Modern Strategic Bomber (You can always change the name ;P )

I will give you guys an update of the provinces pretty soon.

Woo!!
