Something else to point out that I did not see mentioned above - for your first three wives, aim at any noble daughters you can either gain direct political advantage from (Uesugi, Yamana, Ouchi, etc), or any with a +Fertility bonus.

I want to point out that the AI will definitely choose wisely in these regards, too, so such juicy marriage targets get sucked up pretty quickly once they're available.

Come to think of it, the AI does a good job at a few things in Sengoku. Utilizing smart marriage arrangements, Plotting (when it's possible currently), reinforcing with fresh levies, etc. It does some things pretty well.

This would really be an ideal option to have.

It would actually get me to use the Character Search window, which I've found I don't currently need at all what with the liege/character window and the pop-up target selection windows. Having to butter up some landless nobles would be a good option, if they have a reasonable chance of joining you when offered shinies. Some of the overly stingy AI diplo decisions should be fixed up before this gets implemented, however.

I concur. I felt the character search window as really a useless feature when something like a clan history would be more useful to me.

Unless you are one of my Nanbu grandsons from my second game. I was generally ignoring the kid since he was a 2-3-5 and had 8 other brothers/cousins I could use. I left him alone for a year to find he had picked out 4 wives. At first I was like "Good boy," but then I realized my 17 year old grandson was married to wives of ages 39, 41, 43, and 47. I did a quick check and found about 30 available brides over age 16 in the marriage finder so I was a bit confused. Poor boy never had any children.

His younger brother did a much better job of picking out wives on his own and had maybe a dozen children (and ultimately inheritted the clan instead of his older brother).

Presumably the fertility trait is being hidden from the AI as well, which is good. But perhaps the age modifier to fertility shouldn't be hidden from it, so that it can understand the same thing that humans do: under 20 is most fertile, over 30 is barely fertile, over 40 is effectively sterile.

Another tip I just found - if you're low on courtiers to make vassals (from quick expansion or something), you can grant titles to your vassals' courtiers. Find them in the Character section (search your Clan). Since each new vassal gets some random courtiers, you can use this to make new vassals without ever risking running out.

This may seem a very obvious question, but still: at what age do you cease to control your children where marriage is concerned? My Nanbu lord has two sons, ages 13 and 11. He can't marry off the older of the two, who is the heir. He can and has betrothed the younger son.

And once the younger son comes of age (gets a portrait), will I be able to grant him more than one marriage, up to the total of four?

Yes, once one of your sons turns 16 then they'll be able to pick up three more "wives" besides their betrothed. So your boys of ages 13 and 11 can only have one future wife betrothed to them until they turn 16 and come of age.

Keep in mind that they should come of age sometime during or quickly after the month they were born so it doesn't just flip over to being "of age" on January 1st that I've seen. Also try to make sure you find a betrothal that's pretty close to their age.. perhaps a year older.. so that they have the maximum amount of time to create babies with that first betrothed wife.

Thanks for the quick response.

Another question. It appears that rulers will marry their children to you even if those children have negative opinions of you--and those opinions last for years. Does this have any effect on your court, or their bearing children?

I've wondered the same thing, but I don't think it has an effect on anything.
