Hey all, so I looked a bit into CS' music. I managed to add my own music by replacing the in-game music with my own (i.e. renaming my own music to match that of the game's existing tracks). I wonder if anyone else managed to find a way to add in custom music without having to get rid of the game's existing music.

Additionally, I noticed that it appears that the in-game tracks seem to play in different situations, though I can't figure out what situations these are - has anyone figured this out? Sometimes the music will just suddenly change for seemingly no reason.

I don't know. If you bought the deluxe version you might be able to infer something from the track names. They are:

1 AUKIO
2 Burned Bean Coffee
3 Dino Oil
4 Go Nuts Doughnuts
5 Greed & Grief
6 Itsy Bitsy Critter
7 Lehto Electronics
8 Main Theme
9 Morello's Cookie Dough Icecream
10 Pernu Apparel
11 Pop Soda
12 Stern Berger
13 Yaxu

Actually I don't think there's a particularly order. That's the song list alphabetically.

I don't have the soundtrack from the deluxe version but I believe it's actually different than what we get in-game. Rather, the soundtrack is just a remix of some of the game's actual music, as the soundtrack has 14 songs while the game has the following 11 tracks:

Colossal Menu
Colossal Style 1
Colossal Style 1s
Colossal Style 2
Colossal Style 2s
Colossal Style 3
Colossal Style 3s
Colossal Style 4
Colossal Style 4b
Colossal Style 4s
Colossal Style 5
Colossal Style 5b
Colossal Style 5s

EDIT: Actually, I stand corrected, there are in fact 13 tracks in game. Whelp. Still, the only thing I've been able to do is replace the existing soundtracks, not add in new ones.

I just put a custom playlist on in Winamp and mute the music on Cities. Maybe not ideal, but it works fine.

Yeah, might have to use spotify or youtube or a media player or something, though would be nice to be able to add it directly into the game. :\

I like the music!

Yup, it's definitely good music (not as good as SC's, in my opinion, but it does the job well enough), but it's kinda minimal at the moment and I pimped out my SC4 with several GB worth of music back in the day. :(

Could you PM me and lemme know how you got that far? I can't figure out what to name the folder to get it to work.

I'll post here for the benefit of everyone:

So this method will only replace the existing music, not add to it. I also currently don't know which tracks are coded to play in what situations.

First you'll need a program that can convert your music files to the .raw/.snd format. I use goldwave (download the older free version here if you're interested).

Anyways, find the music you want and convert them to .raw/.snd format. If the program you use labels them as .snd, just change it to .raw, you'll get a warning about changing it but don't worry.

Next, go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Cities_Skylines\Files\Audio" (or wherever your CS installation is). You'll see a bunch of files named "Colossal Style 1.raw", "Colossal Style 1s.raw", and so on.

Delete those (or, rather, copy them to some other place just in case). Put your new music in, and rename them to what the old music files were, and that should be it.

Thanks for explaining!!

I might just change the music for the soundtracks of SimCity 1 and SimCity 2000.
Don't get me wrong, i like the music that came with the game! It's just that nothing beats a good ol flash of nostalgia.

(In 25 years i might add CS music to the games we play then ;) )

If we make a music mod, would it be possible to upload it to the workshop? It seems like only assets, maps, save games, and dll files can be uploaded from their respective editors. Or is there a way I don't know about? Again, PM if you need to. I don't wanna hijack the thread.
