I'm still trying to play England in a GC. Twice now I've attempted to add more ships to Cabots exploration fleet of 3, only to have him die each time. By die I mean he dies in his bed in England. Is the game coded to do this? Is it just bad luck on my part? Would the same thing happen to a Conquistador?

How long have you had him? The first Cabot doesn't stay for long, he dies after couple of years. Maybe it was his programmed time to die when you added ships to it's fleet?

Have you sent him to new world already or did he just came?

I had just got him or should I say just saw him in the port, seems I still haven't got my pop up to work right. I've only tried to add to the first Cabots ships, so it may be I just need to ignore trying to add to him and move him out fast? I kind of get the feeling from your questions that you can add to them, normaly.

Sure you can add them. Just reorganize bigger fleet and add some to Cabot's or merge smaller fleet with Cabot's.

Try to move hime out, if he dies anyway then you have just forgot about him and he dies of programming causes.

Btw, J. Cabot is under your command from 1497-1500. What's your date?

I have had fleets of hundreds of warships lead by explorers... though the general idea was to get them to China as fast as possible, not to explore.

Well to be honest I couldn't tell you. I'm usually in a war or two concerning Scotland and/or France and I don't pay attention. Which makes it hard to add any ships to the first Cabot anyway. Although when I did try it I was trying a peaceful strategy, in order to try and get Englands economy in some kind of decent shape. Thanks for the information, I will certainly handle explorers differently in the future.

Sounds like you need to slow down your game speed (use ctrl-) and also use the pause button a bit more frequently. You can do a bunch of things wihile pause is on, then go back to the war. Slowing down the game during war lets you react to the zillions of popups as your armies move around. And yeah, Cabot the first is onltythere for a couple years. Get him over to NA as quick as possible to discover at least one province you can colonize. That way later explorers will have a base at which to anchor

And one more thing: it's generally a good idea to change message setting so whenever a new leader appears, the message window pops up and pauses. This way you definetly won't miss these expolrers.

It's been my experience that explorers and conquistadors ALWAYS appear with the new Year - January 0 (not sure how the computer treats Jan 0), usually in your capitol, although I've had one pop up in Ireland when playing England. Generals and admirals, however, seem to pop up with your largest armies/fleets - they also seem to appear at the start of a year, but seem to die at any time throughout the year. I had a hell of a time finding one admiral until I found about the arrow thingie in one of the posts in this forum (I already had an existing admiral in the fleet - they just added the new one to the same fleet - so I split my fleet).
