I'm looking for advice on map modding.

What is the best way to ensure that modifications made to the various map files are consistent? E.g. to ensure that if I edit the coastline, then the new coast is the same in all the bmp files.

Also, does anyone know what (if any) projection the map uses? If that was known, then it would be relatively easy to use GIS software to align features, and to copy them from real-world maps. (I know it can't be any sort of cyclindrical projection, because Iceland and Lake Baikal would be off the edge. It looks a bit like a pseudocylindrical equal-area projection such as Mollweide or Goode Homolosine, but I've been paying around with them in QGIS and can't get them to match).
