OK, I think I know why the AI did it, and if so it would be a very rare case indeed, but nonetheless possible.

Basically, if you are in colonial war, and AI invades and begins to occupy a colony of yours, and you grant statehood to that colony while they are in the process of occupying it, the AI may then send that army to one of your core provinces, if you have any that border that former colony.

I think the AI, once finishing occupying, thinks: hey, I just finished occupying a core province, I can now move on to other core provinces!

I *think* that the colonial war restriction prevents the AI from moving from neutral / controlled / colonial province into core province. If its already in the core province then it doesn't see a problem.

My preference to solve this is to ban conversion of claims to colonies and colonies to states whilst at war.

I would agree with this - just seems weird to be able to claim tons of new land all due to one fast cav unit while getting your A@@ handed to you in the war...
