Following situation occured:

I attact the Shia-Caliphate for a holy war over a Duchy. I won a bit of Territory. Then suddenly
the guy holding the territory got independent and the war ended as "White peace".
Ok, easy target, I declared war on the new independent nation, won again and guess what, they
crumbled back to their overlord while my war ended again as white peace.
I was kind of pissed but declared war again to the Shia-Caliphate, and now guess what happened ...
This duke again declared his independence. Smart guy.

Unindependent > Independent > Unindependent > Independent > Unindependent
That's kind of exploit using AI. I have no idea how to win against such a tactic.

At least it should be forbidden to go independent while the overlord is fighting to protect a region of the vassal.

I guess the AI does not exploit this intentionally.

It's a simple matter of right timing. If you see there is somewhere an independency war, you have to be quick to attack and siege all provinces. Sometimes even this is not enough, because their leader is fighting with his army vs his old liege and - sometimes - he loses a battle and is captured. In this case the war is over because the warscore is with the the capture automatically -100 %.

But I have to agree, this game mechanic is at all not very smart, esp. this is a matter of the moslem kingdoms, which is the main target for holy wars...

I had a situation recently where one of my Dukes declared independence only to get overrun by muslims before I could kick his backside. He offered me a white peace which I was forced to accept because otherwise I would lose the territory to the muslims (who I was not at war with and so could not attack) but it meant that I didn't get to put him in prison for his rebellion or revoke a title without penalty.

There are definitely some issues that need to be examined here, perhaps allowing the liege who is seeking to re-establish control over the territory to warn the invader (in my case the muslim forces) and if they do not back off to then be allowed to attack them as well in a defensive war.

You are allowed to attack them anyways... Just declare war for the reason of defend faith.
