Can someone (JanH ;-P) Clarify how ATA refueling work? So far it seems to be hit and miss for me. I have sent pair of fighters to the tanker by right clicking on the tanker and sometimes they will fly to the tanker and stay in formation with the tanker (refueling I assume) and other times they fly to the tanker and do nothing. is there any limitation we need to observe (same alt and speed setting) in order for ATA refueling to take place?

I've also noticed that if I have a flight of multiple fighters selected and right click on the tanker, quite often only the flight lead moves to take fuel. After the lead is done the flight goes back to its original orders without refueling the wingmen. If I manually select each fighter and tell them to refuel it seems to work.

lol, dude, u r awesome! u registered ur self on this forum back in 2009 and only now you actually decided to make ur first post !? this is so ... so ... weird!? :)))

any way, I would also like to know how to refuel my little ponies in the air.

Ah. That might be the problem. The number of planes being refueled at the same time should be 2 at least for most large tanker and 1 for fighter with buddy tanks.

Ok, in-air refueling is mostly automatic. If a plane that can be refueled in air (almost all, in fact, but not the UAVs) is reaching bingo fuel, it first checks if it has any primary weapons left. If not, it will always return to base. Otherwise, it searches for a tanker plane in range and checks its queue and fuel availability. If it can receive a full tank, it will go to the fuel tanker, refuel, and return to its previous orders. Otherwise it will return to base.

You are notified when an aircraft 1) returns to base (this cannot be safely revoked); 2) goes to refuel in air, or 3) it tried to refuel but the available tanker did not have enough fuel for it. In the latter case, it is advised to check if this was an exceptional case (the plane needing refueling was very large, or very far away) or whether it is unlikely the tanker can be useful for you again. If not, you should return that tanker to base for refueling and if possible replace it with a fresh one.

A tanker can only refuel one plane at the time, but the tanking time is unrealistically short anyway :)

You can manually order a plane to go to the refueling tanker by right clicking the tanker. Much of the above applies in that case.

I hope this helps.

I just had a refuel airplane "hanging" around my fighters and they did not refuel by using the refuelairplane. I tried to fly around it with my jets for awhile, but in the end they returned to one of the airfields.

It should also be an option to instruct fighters to land on the carrier instead of flying "home". :) I tried that, but it didnt seem to work.

You can reassign aircraft to another base by selecting the plane and right clicking directly on the carrier/airfield/whatever it can land on. Note that if the carrier is in a group (I guess it always is), you will need to zoom in on it until you see it separately from its entourage, and right click it with the plane selected.

Note that most land-based aircraft can not land on an aircraft carrier. An F-35A cannot land on an aircraft carrier; an F-35C is made for that purpose. You should receive an error message if you try to assign a plane to an invalid homebase.

We have a bug that requires each plane in a group to be assigned its home base separately. Will be fixed, after the more serious issues.

For non-air refueling: check the messages you receive just above the 3D view. If a plane that can use in-air refueling don't, it gives a message to tell the tanker doesn't have enough fuel. The exception is planes that are out of primary weapons; they always return to base. Almost all aircraft in the game can use in-air-refueling; UAVs are the exception.

Not in liters, but if you bring up the movement planner there is "show range" button. When on, it will show exactly how far the plane has fuel to reach (in cruise speed).

So does the tanker automatically refuel itself? Thought most tankers carried their refuelling loads separately from their own fuel...

Can AI handle more than one tanker in same group? I'm getting a lot of "cannot fuel, not enough fuel to air-refuel" messages. I was thinking to launch two tanker group. Or should I use separate tankers instead?

A good thing to remember is to set the tanker to circle at low speed and low height so it wont run out and its harder to discover it.

Im not sure if this has anything to do with groups actually. Im getting the "cannot fuel, not enough fuel.." message a lot despite my (in the area) single tanker is at around 20-30% on the fuel meter. If carried fuel and used fuel is the same tank then it should be more than enough to fuel an F35. I think somone needs to take a look at the refuel system.

I receive the "not enough fuel"-error also very constanty. In fact I was only able to refill three or four times in the whole NATO-campaign. Tanker was at ~2-8% fuel consumption, very low speed, mid-low, and mostly exactly between my fighters and the homebase, so they were (of course with AMRAAM left) able to reach the homebase safely, but the tanker exactly in the middle of the way that was started only minutes ago was reported out of fuel.

Not a big game stopper, but it's one of these many small things that lower fun each by each.

We assume the fuel tankers can use their own fuel for its own purposes, so it is treated as one big load. It is quite possible the load is set too low; that is easy to fix.

A tanker can typically give 4-6 reloadings in my experience, yes, of course depending. So when it is 20%-30% it is just time to send it home.

No, tankers cannot in our game refuel each other. I know they can in real life, but we want to avoid giving the AI headaches. :)

I think you should do this the other way around, Make it possible to refuel two aircraft at the same time one on each wing. You can make it take longer because now its more like a driveby and its to fast. :p

Thanks for the good support, keep it up!

I was kinda disappointed to find there was no animation for air-to-air refueling, but tbh it would've taken ages if that was in place, so I spose I can live without it :p

Just a shame the jet hovered 100m ontop of the taker plane, and that counted xD

Do planes have to be bingo to use air-to-air refueling manually? I know when they go bingo they automatically look for a tanker but whenever I try to manually refuel them it just sets a waypoint where the tanker is and then nothing happens.
