Last night proved a major set back for the Seleucid empire, after the gains made in last session I sought to reinforce my gains.

I actually tried to secure long term peace with Macedonia and Egypt. However, they were not going to allow me time to fully convert and consolidate my gains. Still I was somewhat surprised by their risky attack - I knew it was coming but I felt confident I could defend, with the alliance structure I had in place.

Egypt's manpower was the first to self destruct, unsurprising as it took the brunt of my forces. However soon two or three large Macedonian crack forces started to cause terror in and around Syria. I committed a number of minor tactical errors and one or two disastrous battles soon my manpower was struggling too.

Up to now, I had been fighting alone, I called to my allies, Carthage was looking to make gains in Iberia against Rome. Bosphur however was sitting and watching with some concern honourably decided to aid and abet its ally.

After the initial Bosphuric surge it became apparent that the poor quality of bospuran troops was not going to be good enough, and after a couple of serious logistical blunders on my part, things started to look desperate. The Egypts and Macedonians now fighting on a combined front pushed hard and got increasing frustrated at my stubborness.

I think I was quite stubborn I admit, but at no stage until the very end did I not believe that i could fight my way back out of the hole I was in. Indeed early on Egypt made what I believed were large demands after it made an initial rush. Now it is all very well saying hey you fight on you should accept worse demands, but if you make your initial demands fairly high it doesn't leave very far to go.

That what a little defence of my stubborness, I usually dislike seeing players fight in in those circumstances and take your points Deus and Strono.

I certainly wish to congratulate Strono and Deus on taking what was really a win or bust (certainly in the case of Egypt) scenerio. Through in the main part skilled logistical play and calculated risks you managed to successfully repel the Seleucid threat.... for now :)

Yes it was truly an epic fight. I came into the session thinking my Eqypt would be gobbled up. We realised that if we gave you a peace of 30 years you would fully recover and we could note hope of winning a war against you. So we signed a non aggression pact long enough for Eqypt to recover enough and then we gambled everything on an attack. Fighting wa pretty even in the beggining and thing didnt swing until the end. The thing that swung the war in our favour was that i got the tech for building road networks. I built it in all my provinces and that gave us the tactical upp hand, since we could move troops faster and reinforce the areas that needed and also withdraw troops that needed rest. Also due to my manpower going down i consolidated my whole army into 40 regiments and fought on with that. That meant that these regiment could reinforce faster. Also the most important factor was Carthages neutrality, which is understandable, since it gave them a good opportunity to strike at Rome. A very interesting session and thanks to all the participants in the major conflict. It was very hectic but gaming at its finest. A big thanks goes to Macedon for her crucial help.

An epic war indeed :) It was definitely a big gamble, but a necessary one. Egypt had suffered far too much in the last few sessions and had we not taken advantage of the Seleucid's weakened state in the years following the truce, we would have stood no chance of ever reclaiming some of Egypt's former territories before the campaign ended, most likely. At least now the ancient Egyptian-Macedonian alliance has regained some of its former glory.

Admittedly I started to panic in the initial stages of the war; having failed to really secure Bosporan neutrality and with the ever-present fear of Carthage's massive military might at our backs, we really needed to score some big wins early on to have any chance at winning this long-term, should the other two powers intervene. Instead, I lost a freshly built 30K army in two short battles, which prompted me fight more cautiously, using the Egyptian road system and the Macedonian navy to make quick strikes wherever possible and concentrate our forces whenever possible. Macedon's finest general, Kleitos, had also 'escaped' from a Carthaginian dungeon a few years before to have another go at fighting the Seleucids, and his 10 martial skill undoubtedly played a critical role in winning battles. Their navy was pretty much destroyed in a quick series of amphibious assaults to draw their triremes out of port. A rather useless endeavour in retrospect, but I was afraid of the potential support their 50 or so ships could lend to the naval war if the Bosporans or Carthaginians joined. Dominance of the seas was absolutely crucial, as Macedon had to be be left undefended for most of the war.

Still, the Seleucid Empire put up a hard fight. Admirably, even after suffering losses that would have sent me spamming the 'Sue for Peace' button immediately, Smowz fought on, determined to hold us off until the Empire's allies could come to their aid. Much to our dismay, the Bosporans finally joined the war 4-5 years after it had begun and just as we had begun to move out from Syria on the offensive.

Fortunately, what the Bosporan Kingdom had in manpower (360,000 men in reserves alone!!), they were lacking in technology. Still, killing half a million Bosporans, regardless of their inferior quality, seemed (and was) impossible. With Egypt out of manpower and Macedon already having lost around 100K in the first 5 years, it started to look like we would eventually have to agree to white peace. We halted our offensive into Seleucid territory and pulled back to Syria once again. In a series of bloody battles, with entire armies being annihilated, Macedon and Egypt somehow came out on top.

Our second offensive (and the last one we had the manpower to pull off) ended with the capture of Seleucia and most of the territories surrounding Syria. After a few more armies being annihilated, and having realised Carthage was not going to come to their aid, we finally got a peace worthy of our gamble.

It was a pleasure battling alongside Strono as always. Smowz and Khal also put up an extraordinary fight, so much so that I hope we don't have to clash again... but this campaign's revolved around the Diadochi wars from the very beginning, and it seems very likely it will until the very end. ;)
