Was looking at the characters list and I noticed it has Alexander The Great with his birth and death and all his stats. Also Phillip II of Macedon plus many others. Can I change the dates to play them

yes, in the defines.txt file you can change the start date of the game

Would require a lot of data modifications to make it historically accurate regarding empires & such, wouldn't it? They aren't in there already, right?
This. There is no data in the history files that would make modifying the start date in any way historically accurate - you'd have Alexander or Philip running off to fight those evil Seleucids...

I suspect that Phil and Alex are there simply for family tree purposes, so players can see which characters can trace their lineage to them (Pyrrhus, for example).

Crusader Kings has Charlemagne in its files, for the same reason. But no Carolingian mods for that game, but the limits on dates in Rome are a real limit. :(

But you know you can go back in time? It works with no problems (unless you want before 1 AVC...), the problem is after the game ends where it doesn't work.
