Having a massive issue right now, which might be to do with the fact that I think the launcher just recently auto-updated to version 2024.16.

Any time I load up the game: the latest update pop-up reappears even when selecting "don't show again", all my custom empires made disappear, and any save games that aren't cloud saved also disappear. All my settings also revert, such as music volume, disabling the tutorial, customized outliner, etc.

OS: Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS

Platform: Steam (Snap install version)

Launcher Version: 2024.16 (Signed into launcher as well.)

Game Version: 3.14.1592 (3d78)

Mods: None

DLCs: All installed and loaded.

As I mentioned, cloud saves will remain. I can also find the files for them in "/home/ziitrone/snap/steam/common/.local/share/Steam/userdata/160915729/281990/remote/save games". However manually adding save files into here (as well as the user_empire_designs.txt file) that I had saved a copy of do not show up. These saves were played on the same game version I am on now (very recent). I'm guessing this doesn't work due to some cloud save toggle, which is fine but I wanted to mention that I did try to do so.

The main thread "File locations, Windowed mode, DLC names/numbers" lists the following info for Linux:

"
File Locations on Linux

The binary and DLC folder by default are in ~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris/

The user files (settings.txt, error logs, saved games, gfx, mods) are in .local/share/Paradox\ Interactive/Stellaris/ .
"

Now the first location is there as expected in "/home/ziitrone/snap/steam/common/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Stellaris".

However, the second location for user files, is not there. The location "/home/ziitrone/.local/share" has no "Paradox" folder. Another location at "/home/ziitrone/snap/steam/common/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris" has other files but not any user files. Below is the image of what is in that folder:

Troubleshooting steps I have tried:
  • Verifying game files.
  • Reinstalling the game (multiple times).
  • Deleting the old "$HOME/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris" folder that I found.
  • Enabling and disabling cloud saves for Stellaris in steam settings.
  • Creating new custom empires and local (not cloud saved) games to test, all of which disappear after re-launching.
Not sure what else to try, and still haven't been able to fix this. I'm really hoping someone has a fix or workaround for this, because I can't load my existing save, and even if I start a new game and cload save it, every time I launch the game I have to fix all my settings every time (music volume, disable tutorial, customize the outliner, etc.).

If any more info is needed I will do my best to give any additional info needed.

I have similar problem on Tumblweed. Steam is running as flatpack.
I have found workaround for this: in game properties in Steam in Beta tab choose the one which is called "3.14.159 Cirnus version rollback". All saves and custom empires are back.

Yes, our games do not work well with Snap or Flatpack Steam installs.

You need to use the native Linux client from Valve:

"Install Steam Now"

All the best!

Okay thanks for the heads up on the snap version, I didn't know about that. I will switch over the version as my workaround in running it with Proton hurts performance.
