Is this hard coded or is there anyway to edit this? I'd love to see what would happen with 5 year treaties extended by 5 years by war. Might create a more fluid diploatic system whihc would provide a lot more interest in diplomacy during those "down" times.

Alliances in game are hardcoded.
However any treaty already in effect when the game starts can have an set date for expiration though (up to 300 years max ;-).

Those get reduced to the standard 10 though once they get into a war.
