Playing Austria in the GC, I've established a military alliance with Hungary, Bavaria, Saxony, and Baden. In December 1503 Turkey declares war on my ally Hungary. Tripoli joins the war on Turkey's side. Austria and the other members of our alliance join the war on the side of Hungary.

In order to tear apart the opponent coalition, Austria (which definitely was the alliance leader - at least up to the war) makes peace with Tripoli in January 1504. Then two rather strange things happen:

The other members of Austria's alliance don't give a crap to what the leader of the alliance says and continue their war with Tripoli.

Although all members of Austria's alliance are still at war with Turkey and the alliance still exists, EU somehow manages to treat this single war as two separate and unrelated wars and does not allow Austria to send any troops into Hungary to defend against the common enemy Turkey.

Austria was not the leader for this war: As Hungaria has been attacked by Turkey, and call for allies, Hungaria is the leader concerning this specific war, whatever is the 'true' leader.
This rule has been set to avoid players using alliances for only their own profit: if you are not the one who declare war, or the one who has been declared on, you are not the leader.
By making diplomacy without being leader, Austria is automatically ban from alliance, and so must continue war alone.

Ahem, there is a neverchanging 'leader of the alliance in peace' and there are changing 'leaders of the alliance in war'. The first one sets up the alliance, recruits new members, declines applications and such. But whenever a war starts, the member who declares war (or the one whom war is declared upon) is the temporary leader of the alliance for this war. So as Austria, You have in fact concluded a seperate peace with Turkey letting down Your ally Hungary....

Hmm this makes me a bit confused...

I, playing as Venice, started a war (this would make me the temporary alliance leader) against Milan (this would make them temporary leaders). The war waged ang I conquerd Milan and got the country in the peace negotiations. This would by your logic end the war but Spain, England and Lothringen didn't end the war, not even when I've conquerd Spanish territory (my allies held Spanish territory too) or beat up the English navy they agreed to my no claim peace proposal...

Well just curious, and a bit irritated ;). I use 1.04
