I'm playing as Rome, it's 150 BC (604 AUC), and I have Italy, bits of Austria and Switzerland, and just acquired a foothold in Greece. The rest of Greece is Seleukids and Macedon+puppets, Anatolia is a mess, Mandubia has a nice blob in France, and Carthage is making headway in Iberia. Am I behind schedule when it comes to acquiring Rome's historical borders or am I still on time?

I've never been that expansionist in other games and campaigns (not the WC type, as you can tell).

While you are having fun that is alright. You would set your own challenges and objectives.

Which is a polite way of saying: Yes, you're absolutely behind schedule.

It's absolutely still possible to achieve Rome's historical borders - but you would have to massively increase the speed at which you're expanding.

For reference: If you wanted to expand at a slow, leisurely pace and still achieve historical borders by the end of the game you should definitely have control over all of Greece or all of Carthaginian homeland by now. Probably would also want to started you expansion into Spain or Gaul.

Don't be discouraged though: You can still achieve historical borders - I would take this as a challenge: You have taken it slow until now so now try to pick up the pace and learn how to expand more quickly.

I started to make headway, and then came a defensive war against Carthage (demanding Sardinia) that turned into a 20 year quagmire. He was able to defend northern Africa after initial gains, and once I reestablished my foothold in Sardinia it was obvious the war would be going nowhere. At this point, those borders ain't happening. I might be able to still snatch France and the Balkans, and maybe Iberia.
On the bright side, you have a good reason to play another campaign as Rome
Ha! Yep. There are some things I'd do a wee bit differently next time around, even in areas not necessarily dependent on dynamic world reaction.
