Huh, you're right they don't.

That's an interesting aspect for them to be lacking.

Age of Wonders IV present lacks the perfect symmetry that we have come to expect. Probably this is because they intend to add a major transformation in one of the expansion packs to come.

True, but I'm not sure why we would expect perfect symmetry in the first place. Planetfall, for example, had very asymmetrical distribution of the various damage channels among the factions.

I honestly kinda expected a magical cyborg/construct transformation in Ashes and Empires.

People sometimes wondered if Goldtouched was originally meant to be a Major Transformation for Materium, akin to Astral Attunement on Astral. Maybe a developer set it wrong and they didn't bother to change after launch?

Whether it happens to be true or not, this doesn't seem to be a priority for Triumph.

Something like...
The flesh is weak/biotransference, but fantasy flavored?
Perhaps Clockwork Souls (turn the race into Warforged-ish gaining the Construct type and granting mana or souls on death?

Or turn the antimagic theme, replace soul with a void of sorts, big+magic resistance and immunity to debuffs or something?

No, Materium by design doesn't have a Major Transformation and likely won't get one either as it doesn't mesh with what materium represents. We also don't really like the idea of an elemental or clockwork/steampunk/construct transformation.

Major transformations are counterintuitively worse than minor transformations, since they are incompatible with one another. Materium having a T4 minor transformation in Gold-Touched is an advantage for that line compared to the others.

Yeah I got the idea that Materium is more geared towards enchantments and minor transformations and what it represents and all. But on the other hands we already have materium transformations that give our people skins made of steel and/or gold, so I do think, if you decide differently at any point during the development cycle, a major Materium could still be justified within the lore.

Cool. I can appreciate some neat asymmetry.

What was the design philosophy behind affinities if 4 out of 5 of them get major transformations? As it is now, players MUST have 2 or 3 affinity branches completed for a well rounded endgame strategy. It is not useful for a player to max focus any affinity branch because they are dependent on each other.

What i find strange is the fact that transformation (and major one) are a main selling point of the game.
But materium is not allowed to major transform, i can live with that but it is indeed curious.

I think you guys are looking in it wrong. It's not that Major Transformations are releated to affinites as much as those are "thematic" and related to a sub-theme of a Tome (I feel like Tomes are in many instances just conventionally related to an Affinity). If there was a Tome that both would fit thematically and mechanically for such a Major Transformation they would do it I guess. My point is that transformations area idea driven (hey let's make a Race change into Devils so we will get Orc Devils etc) rather then mechanics driven, so "each affinity needs a Major Tranformation" is not a design approach. In consequence it might feel assymetrcial/lacking but guess with some decisions it might be hard to implement something. The only idea I can get from the top of my head if some of the above ideas were scrapped is maybe a "crystal" form or something (hard to tell how "hard" it would be from implementation point).

I do agree though on the subject that sometimes transformations overlapping does not give a desired effect. I don't wanna change my Dark edgy/shadow/evil Culture into a green man for example., there should be more control on which aspects of Transformation carry over or a better synergy between them as far as models go.

The Broken Lords from Endless Legend spring to mind as a major materium transformation. A Feudal society that encased their souls in magical armour as a way of prolonging their lifespan

Although in game it is regarded more like a curse as it requires them to steal life essence from others like armoured vampires.

Not saying something like that should be in AOW4 or even if something like that would work. Hard to imagine how it would look with all the form options. Maybe the armour helmets/headpeices are cast in the shape of what they used to look like?

I dunno just came to me as a fantasy race that litteraly cast a major materium racial transformation on themselves! (although you could argue it's more shadow or astral I guess?
