An Epic Tale and a Nasty Bug

My latest atempt at doing anything at all with the count of Porto from 1066:

- Wife won't die. Won't produce babies either.
- Liege asks for troops, I oblige and promptly get wounded in battle
- I get a tourney event (DVIP) and refuse. Stressed.
- Not 5 days later, stress turns into schizophrenia.
- Not 5 days after that, I get ill.

I only had time to switch laws to elective (so that my 51 yo bro could inherit) and promptly fell dead.

The war was going badly for Galiza anyway, and eventually get DoWed by the big blue Islamic dukedom. Considering I had no army by that point, I just pledged to him.

He keeps himself busy with multi-front wars, I apparently keep myself busy not giving him any troops and plotting with other vassals of his.

Eventually I get asked to start a Civil War, and that I do. Quick army sent to Coimbra, success, former liege offers to recognize my claim on it, great! Peace, independence and 2 provinces! Best attempt ever!

Now, I'm 59, 15 years away from another change in laws, and got two guys before my kids for the inheritance. Then again, I also have two one-province counts as neighbors. I can take them on and give the provinces to those two fellas. If things go bad with their liege I'll just pledge to him.

So I war Castelo Branco and Bragança, my Leon ally joins in, I swiftly defeat the 21 army of Castelo Branco, start the siege and... instantly it belongs to Leon. Wtf. Reload, same thing. After trying it a couple of times, it seems every-time there is a battle on the Castelo Branco province, even before the battle is over, it's owner instantly surrenders to Leon. What gives? :confused:

I guess he simply signed peace with Leon first .. and I bet he had a claim on the title, so he gave it over to Leon without a fight.

Oh well, problem fixed. I attacked Bragança instead, conquered it.

My Marshal was kind enough to die in battle, and the other guy in front of my kid seems to have lost martial skill somehow, so my eldest became heir!

And then the King of Leon was kind enough to also get completely wiped out, so I got peace without having to even pledge to anyone!

...then the landless King of Leon kept bugging me to give him my lands, and I told him to bugger off, so eventually I got an event to declare independence, which I did. So I was free!

Then I died.

Then the game said "Dynasty establishes itself" and changed inheritance laws! :cool:

Happiness lasted 1 week, after which I was DoWed by an Islamic Kingdom again, and I pledged to him.

2 years later, attacked a rival Islamic Kingdom, and now I am count of 5 provinces, with 1000+ in debt, a rival for a wife, 7 (seven!) bastards and counting, 3 of which called "Rui", and to top it off... I'm sleeping with my brother's wife. And he's still my friend and faithful 16 steward.

God I love this game :D

Finally clawed my way out of debt, and with the eldest daughter's marriage money, made myself a Duke! :cool: Fighting the inevitable wars that follow, being the only Christian ruler in Iberia. Also, 11 bastards and counting, plus my rival of a wife is almost non-stop pregnant, and ended my affair with the sister-in-law. Women, hey? Go figure.
 
Why not? It's got to be one of the more challenging starting counties, looking at his story. Yet it also has great potential for expansion vs. the Taifas, and why not the Jimenez and the rest of Iberia too.
 
Playing as a count in that area is usually very difficult. I started a game as the Count of Bragança (Braganza in the game, IIRC) in 1066 and I had to try 5 times to even survive the first few decades. Then again, my dinasty went on until I became King of Portugal and France later that game, and it was (and still is) great fun.
 
I'm constantly at war with everything around me, and now exploring new depths of debt at -2500 gold, but still growing. I have now placed my heir as count of Lisbon, and my bastards as counts and bishops of 3 other provinces. I still have the basic 5 Portuguese ones.

Now, if only I'd be able to spend 25 years without a war, so that I could claim more titles... :eek:o

Also, I've lost count of how many bastards. Probable over 15 by now. This man's amazing. And the game is popping up education events every 2 days.
