If both an overlord and a vassal have claims to the same system in a war the overlord should get the system in the event they win the war or its an occupied system in status quo peace. This is only logical.

Disagree that this should be automatic. Maybe in the case of a tie for claims but that's why there are levels to claims, to see who is more invested. If an overlord really wants vassal territory they should negotiate for and invest in integration.

Vassals should also not let overlord’s enemies access through their space during a war.

Vassals should also not be able to enslave any overlord pops within their space.

Hear me out on this…

Overlords should be able to annex individual systems from their client states.

I know it’s radical. But a master should be able to tell his subject… “That’s a nice Dyson sphere you got there. You put in so much work building it, I’m so proud of you. Yeah…. That’s mine now.”

Historically speaking, sometimes vassals have to be appeased or there's rebellion or other difficulties. So even if improvements are needed, I don't think the solution is for vassals to just take whatever abuse you give.

Agreed. Until they make negative loyalty have real consequences, all these suggestions basically just boil down to treating vassals like you conquered them (without paying influence for claims, or taking on empire size, or having to administer them, or getting border friction, or...).

Very much agreed with these. Vassals in stellaris are currently able to rebel but they will only do so if there is military parity, which is unlikely to happen since the taxes overlords levy on vassals mean that the power gap between them just grows and grows. You only really see rebellions when a 3rd party has smashed the overlord in a war.

IMO the issue is that loyalty is toothless. Overlords can sit on having dozens of vassals with -100 loyalty and nothing happens because of that huge power gap. My proposed solution (which I'm pretty sure I put in the suggestions box at some point) is that every negative point of loyalty should decrease tax efficiency. I.e. for every -1 loyalty you get -0.9 tax, so a fully disloyal vassal would keep 90% of their taxed resources. Thematically this would represent disloyal vassals cooking the books, employing smugglers, bribing overlord officials etc.

Mechanically it would mean that overlords with disloyal vassals wouldn't have a mechanism by which they steam ahead, allowing the vassals to catch up in tech/eco/military enough that they might trigger a rebellion.

EU4 has solutions for this:

There’s a “Seize Land” action you can take that will take a vassal’s province.

You can also replace their ruler and subsidize their military, among other things.

The downside to these mechanics is that they cost Liberty Desire, which is an inverse version of Stellaris’ loyalty system. If you abuse your vassal too much, they’ll want independence.

EU4 also has a transfer occupation mechanic, which the AI will use if it believes an ally is a more appropriate future owner of the province.

It’s also way easier to see cores/claims in EU4 than it is in Stellaris. Claims in Stellaris should really be accessible at a glance.

just double claim it. the system is granted to whoever has the most claims. if you can't spend enough influence to outclaim them, it's fair that they have a chance to get it.
