2005
Stockholm

An elementary student listens to his teacher. Oh how he loathed that teacher who gave the most monotonous lectures. However, today's lesson has him on the edge of his seat. It talks a dictator, a bold ambition, the war to end all wars, and the end of innocence...

1938
Stockholm

Over 65 years beforehand, Sven Alfven sat at his desk. Smuggly, he grinned as he thumbed through various newspapers all dating March, 17, 1934. He gently laid one page of newspaper down and picked up the second. The headlines read in bold print; Coup ended; Communists victorious! Of course this idea did not express the views of many ,but shortly after the communist propaganda fluttered through the streets. Most of the discontented had fled to Norway, Finland, Denmark, or England and many that did not were promptly executed. However, despite the turmoil of the age the "People's Sweden" was flourishing. The standard of living had not dropped dramatically and the people were all well fed. Alfven snickered pathetically in his own despair as he remembered the coup that gave him this position. "Ahh, the coup.." he spoke softly to himself, "..the coup..." He remembered some of his close friends that had been killed. And the thousands upon thousands who, without question, risked, and in some cases, gave their lives for him on his march to Stockholm. He shed a tear for those that had died, and shed another for himself...

The bored, yet slightly amused student flipped ahead in his history book. He came across a large picture of a statue of a man, his hands outstretched. He seemed godly... The caption read, "Sven Alfven; Leader of the Communist movement in Sweden; 1896-???" He soon came across a title in bold print which read, Rise of People's Sweden and the Coup of 1933. He read it slowly to himself.

The Communist movement in Sweden had been gaining momentum in Sweden since the 1920's. Sven Alfven was able to gather a large following through the media and through his brillent speaches. In 1932 Alfven led 5,000 men through Northern Sweden, where the Communist movement had it's roots. Panicked by the formation of the People's Army of Sweden, as the many called it, the current government sent an Army of 2,000 soldiers to halt the PAS from moving south. Growing tensions forced the government to send more soldiers to the line bolstering their forces two fold. With the assassination of a leading aristocrat, supposedly by the communists, the governmental soldiers were ordered the eradicate the PAS. The PAS, with great leadership, courage, and luck, defeated the better armed and clothed governmental army marking the first battle of the Revolution (December, 12, 1932). Many battles later Stockholm was captured and the goverment driven out. Alfven had won. The "Red Age" of Sweden had begun...

The student, awestruck began to daydream about times past. The teacher, seeing his failure to pay attention, slapped her ruler on the student's desk quickly arousing him from his dream. Dazed and embarrassed he shrunk in his seat.

Alfven quickly regained his composure and sat up. He was busy, and this wasn't the time for him to feel sorry for himself. The first military operation of People's Sweden would begin in days time. The first challenge for the People's Army of Sweden would soon come.

And He Wept
Chapter I
First Ambitions

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The student, freed from his school for now, walked to the local library. He polited ask the librarian about Sven Alfven. At this, the librarian led the student to a large oak bookcase. There he found a line of books labeled I-X. He grabbed the book labeled II as he had already learnt of Alfven's rise. The book leabeled II, a deep blue backround with gold letters which read Norway...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sven Alfven after a week of going over battle plans with commanders, tending to tedious formalities, and giving speaches, one after another, after another. Alfven was exhausted. He sat at his faithful desk, his head on his hand and his elbow which lay on the desk keeping his head from falling, kept him awake. But he was nodding off. He closed one eye, then the other. However, a knock on the door quickly woke Alfven up. "Who is it?" Alfven muttered, still half asleep. "Major General Douglas, sir!" "Ahh, Douglas, come in, come in!"

Douglas laid out a map on Alfven's desk. "Here, are the final plans for a possible invasion of Norway. On behalf of all commanders in this operation I hope you can finalize this." Douglas was given a look ushering him to continue. He cleared his throat. "Hmm, well, yes. The Norwegians have 2, possible three infantry divisions compared to our 4 infantry and one calvary giving us the numerical advantage. However, an outright attack on Oslo would cause high casualties so we all suggest the surrondment and siege of Oslo. Well, umm.. 2 Infantry divisions will hold our territory in the south while our calvary cuts off Oslo from the North and an infantry division lands to the West, quickly cutting off Oslo. Following this will be the blockade of Oslo and the air bombardment. Another infantry division will hold the north." A pause, Douglas again clears his throat. "That's it, sir.." "Very well," was Alfven's response "This sounds to me as an excellent plan, set the date for March, 1. We will be risking everything in this attack, no idea how other nations will take this show of agression, dismissed!" Douglas gives a salute which is quickly returned by a drowsy Alfven. He drifts into peaceful sleep.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The student, now as interested as ever, flipped furiosly through the book until he came across an illustration. Of the encirclement of Oslo. He was awed with nationalism when he saw the caption. In less than one week, Oslo was surronded. 4 days later, it would be taken. He looked over his shoulder when he saw a friend. This friend was studying history at the local university and knew much about Alfven and his quest. "Ahh, what a tactical accomplishment. The destruction of Oslo" said the friend, grinning. "Quite the feat, no?" The student eyes were still stuck on the illustration.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Douglas' XO came to breif Alfven on the situation. "Oslo has been captured." It had been only 11 days since the war had started... "The only set back is slight Norwegian gains in the North. Our divisions fly north leaving nothing but the corpses of the Norwegian Army in their wake. Victory is not an if, but a when." Alfven, grinned. "Great, great. What about the supression of partisans?" "Douglas has informed me that we have planted spies to break up resistance groups that may form. We don't have much reason to worry." Was XO's response. "Good, good, very well. Dismissed!" They exchanged salutes and the XO walked out, contented that he had pleased Alfven. And pleased he was...

Student and friend glanced through the book labeled II. It read on the destruction of the Norwegian Navy by the Swedish Navy. It also had a picture of one of these ships in the Swedish Army

Ingham_Winter_WWII.jpg

It also had many other pictures of soldiers advancing through Norway, rifles slinged over their backs, the Swedish flag sown into their collars, smiling brightly. No doubt this was part of the propaganda effort to ease any unrest due to this suprise attack. Yet this was no suprise. With a larger and larger void between the Norwegians and Swedes during the years leading up to 1938 and the breaking of the Scandanavian alliance (The ceasing of the non-agression pact) it may of been imminent. You can't put yourself in their shoes after you know the truth...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alfven, after a glorious victory speech over national radio broadcast he sat down with his military commanders. It had been less than 4 months since the war started, it had virtually ended 11 days after the declaration of war. But, the Norwegians fought all the way to Vardo. It was the night of June, 28, 1939 when the official annexation came.
"Let us toast our glasses to Mj. General Douglas who led this campaign from start to finish. Let it be known that he is one of the best military minds of Sweden!" Alfven proclaimed. After boisterous applause and a toast Douglas raised his glass. "Let us not forget our glorious leader, Sven Alfven, who has kept this nation running since the beginning, and may the end be far, far, far away!" The generals toasted and as one symphonious voice yelled, "Long live People's Sweden!"
And He Wept
Chapter I b.
Interim 1939
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sven Alfven sat at his desk. Looking over maps of his new territory in Norway. He thirsted for more but he would have to wait. From what he heard, he was still facing problems oppressing the Norwegians. Such a large change from Democracy to Communism... He heard a knock on the door and the figure quickly let himself in.

"Good morning, sir!" said Alfven's secretary. "I have a report from Norway on the partisan activity. The secretary quickly scurried out. The letter's return adress noted that the letter was from his military commander in Oslo.

Dear Sven Alfven,

The situation is somewhat grim in Norway. Our moles in their resistance circles can't stop the ever growing numbers of partisans. We are supressing them for now but, you never know what can happen, when, and if they'll revolt. However, there is good news. We have destroyed a large resistance ring in Oslo recently. That will deter any attempts at rebellion there.

Sincerly,
Major General Gyllenkrok

Alfven put down the letter, furious. "Why can't we destroy there d***ed partisans!" Surely Alfven thought that Norway would be wuickly opressed... Quickly Alfven regained his composure and went back to paper work. Of course he was still mad, but that is no way for a leader to act.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The student, still thumbing through the book labeled II, came aross a picture of Norwegian partisans. He read the paragraph that went with it.
After the conquest of Norway, People's Sweden had problems opressing partisan groups. Most Norwegian's were not happy at all with this sudden change of government. The resistance for based in Hammerfest in northern Norway. A Swedish division was quickly sent there to oppress, but had little luck. The resistance spread all the way down to Bergen. Oppressing the partisans had become a bigger task then the Norwegian Army.
Afven had just finsihed his paper work when his adjutant burst through the door. "The Germans have invaded Poland!"
Mettermrck said:
Interesting concept and story. I hope to read more. Is it really that hard to oppress people? I think the problem is keep them silent. :D
Perhaps I meant supress. :confused: :D . Yeah, well, the partisans in Norway are really giving me hell. All this while I'm planning my next invasion! Expect update in about 1 hour
And He Wept
Chapter II a.
2nd Ladder Rung
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The student had finished reading the book labeled II and decided to bring the book labeled III home. It read People's Sweden 1939 in big bold letters on the cover... Once he was home he opened the book. The first date read September, 1, 1939. The beginning of the second world war. He flipped a few pages ahead and landed on an illustration of an invasion plan it seemed. Copenhagen was the title.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alfven sat, anxiously at his desk. Waiting for Douglas to arrive. Finally, Alfven heard a tap at his door. "Come, in!" yelled Alfven. Douglas quickly walked in and saluted. "Douglas," said Alfven "you are my most trusted general. You led our great nation to victory in 1938. You were with me since those first days. That's why I have entrusted upon you the task of taking Denmark for our glorious nation." Douglas, with the sound of self-satisfaction in his voice replied: "Thank you, sir! Thank you very much." There was a puase... "I expect you to draw up a plan for invasion as soon as humanly possible, Douglas." They exchanged salutes and Douglas walked out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The student continued thumbing through the 3rd book. He came across a page headed with the title, Danish-Swedish Breakdown.

Since the fall of Norway in 1938 Danish-Swedish relations had been thinning. The Danes, not taking lightly to communists, broke of all relations in late 1939. This caused Sweden to withdraw their non-agression pact and militarize Malmo, which connected by a small boat ride to Copenhagen. The Swedish Navy rebased in docks closer to Denmark and all 3 squadrons of planes were rebased in port towns along the Danish straight. War seemed imminent.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been 5 days. Alfven, as was his usual self, sat behind his desk doing paperwork when Douglas walked in. "Ahh, Douglas! Sit down, please." "Thank you, sir," was the reply "but I think I'll stay standing." Douglas than pulled out a scroll and unrolled it on Alfven's desk. Alfven stood up to receive a better vantige point. "From aerial recon and spies we have learned that the Danes are entrenched at Copenhagen. 4 divisions strong. Blockade and air assault will then come. We will land infantry in Arhus in northern Denmark and then land our newly formered tank division to reinforce the beachhead. From there we'll secure mainland Denmark." Douglas paused. "Taking Odense and Copenhagen will be a problem. Nothing to hard for us though, sir!" Alfven sat back down. The date for the attack will be April 14, 1940. Godspeed, goodluck! Douglas shuffled out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The student came across a few pararaphs and a picture of tanks. The caption read "The Denmark Campaign was the first use of tanks by People's Sweden, under mj. general Rappe they were one of the crucial figures of the campaign. He continued to a paragraph on Rappe's tanks. However, in the campaign for Odense and Copenhagen the tanks did not perform as well. In future wars, though, they would prove their worth.

m42.jpg

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alfven was disgruntled. The daily reports on the situation weren't bettering his mood either. Mainland Denmark was taken quickly. The PAS then turned it's eyes towards Odense. Only after extreme bombing had the PAS been able to take the island city of Odense. Copenhagen was another battle all together. 4 AA brigades attached to garrisons and 5 permenent flak positions were up. They could not bomb this city.
The battle in the sea was different. In the Kattegrat we were winning most battles, knocking back the Danes in 3 sea battles. In the Gulf of Danzig they were losing, however.
Alfven didn't know what to do. He was overstressed, overworked, and furious beyond belief. The Norwegians still giving him trouble. The battle of Copenhagen, all were sapping this once glorious leader. However, he'd fight on, like a soldier. As long as he could...
oh... I must have missed that part.
Then RETREAT!!! Run Away! Run Away! Save yourselves!!!
And how about popping up a non-agression pact/military alliance with Germany, then move in to Poland. Plan: You take the north part (not Danzig) and then move inwards till you reach the Romanian border....cut the country in half BEFORE the MR pact :D
Edit: F****ing Brits wouldn't be too happy....perhaps you should consider expanding the air force and navy.
Edit: Sorry for the double post
